Hver
Every day at noon (except Sundays) a new A-Z post goes live - or no post today.
The theme for this year is Resilience as given by the team, with my subtitle Flowers, Trees and Ancestors.
I alt fik parret altså ni børn, hvoraf otte overlevede.
Now for another branch of my family tree - my grandmother's father's mfamily. First up, his mother from Vordingborg.
The mother of my maternal grandmother was Johanne Kirstine Madsdatter. She was born in Ulse and baptised at home June 7, 1808. Her parents were Ane Nielsdatter and Mads Jensen. Soon after - before the wonderful new church registers of 1814 introducing lists tracking departures and arrivals of parishioners - the whole family moved to Køng.
In Køng Johanne Kirstine was confirmed in April 1823 (as Kirstine Madsdatter, but the register shows that it is the same person) and left for Haslev parish as a domestic servant on 21 May 1826. She quickly returned, because the church register for Køng states that Johanne Kirstine Madsdatter, 19 years old, domestic servant in Køng and Rasmus Madsen, 28 years old, farmhand in Køng, were married on 31 August 1827.
The young Johanne Kirstine must have been visibly pregnant at the wedding, because their first child was born only 20 days later. It was a daughter who was named Ellen Sophie.
Two years later, on 19 July 1829, the couple's first son, Hans Peter, was born. It says in the church register that he was baptised at home two months after the birth due to illness. He never really recovered, I think, for he died at the age of 4 years and 8 months. Perhaps something went amiss at his birth, because their next child was not born until six months after his death, more than five years after he was born. It was another daughter, called Ane Dorothea.
Hereafter the couple had a child approximately every two years until they had had a total of nine- Of these eigth survived into adulthood. In the fine new church registers I have no problem finding all their children, so here is a list:
1 Ellen Sophie 1827
2 Hans Peter 1829 - 1834
3 Ane Dorothea 1834
4 Mads Peder 1837
5 Else Cathrine 1840
6 Hans 1842
7 Magrethe 1844
8 Jens 1846
9 Christian 1848
Rasmus Madsen died on 12 June 1868 aged 70 and Johanne Kirstine on 8 January 1876, aged 68. The church book states: "of Kjøng Poorhouse, but living on Svinø". I'll return to Svinø in the end of my tale.
In this post I talk of the fine, new church registers ... these are the parish registers that were introduced in 1813 to 1814. And they are really wonderful.
Here is the page where Johanne Kirstine's baptism is recorded in the church registers for Ulse parish 1808. It is neatly and legibly written, but some important "details" are missing. For example the date of birth and the name of the mother.

And to compare, here is the page with the baptism of her mother-in-law, Maren Kirstine Andersdatter. She was born 10 years later in Vordingborg parish.
The vicar here has a horrible handwriting, but the pre-printed columns make it so much easier. At the top it says: Born Womankind. And the column headings are:
No. - Year and Date - Child's Full Name - Date of Baptism either in Church or at Home - Parents' Name, Status, Occupation and Place of Residence - Godparents' Name, Status and Place of Residence - Where Listed in the General Register - Remarks

We're missing a map or two. Maps tomorrow: K for Kort = Maps.
Good (and legible) records make SUCH a difference don't they?
SvarSletOh yes. I'd like to travel back in time sometimes and ask those vicars and deans to please think of posteriority (me)!
SletThis is why i tried to teach my children handwriting is so important.
SvarSletI tried too - and failed.
SletThat handwriting would be hard for me, but you know the names so that makes it a little easier.
SvarSletI missed yesterday's post which I read just now, because I went to play with the baby twins :)
Liwing twins to play with are so much better and more important than my long gone ones (yes there are twins in my ancestry as well).
SletKnowing names and placenames helps - a little.
When I am working on these records, I find I 'talk' to these recorders. "Otto, seriously? You couldn't have taken just a moment or two to make this LEGIBLE?!" Sometimes, I 'talk' to the people themselves. "Jonathan, you know how to spell your name and the town you were born in. Help me here!" I love following the lines!
SvarSletI have a vicar rigth now ... it looks like what the children "write" before learning how to read and write. I am speaking quite roughly to him. A moment or two would not have helped him, but so many of the others. My ancestors were, I suppose mostly illiterate, and sign in big, shaky letters for instance SCH for Steffen Christiansen.
