Words for Wednesday ~ Finally writing again!

Word for Wednesday is a challenge that was started a long time ago. Now it has turned into a movable event with Elephant's Child as our coordinator; and the Words provided by a number of people.

The general idea of this challenge is to make us write. Poems, stories, subtitles, tales, jokes, haiku, crosswords, puns, ... you're the boss.
Use all Words, some Words, one Word, or even none of them if that makes your creative juices flow. Anything goes, only please nothing rude or vulgar.

In May, David M Gascoigne will supply us with prompts, but they'll appear at  Elephant's Child.

It is also a challenge, where the old saying
"The more the merrier" holds true.

So Please, remember to follow the links, go back and read other peoples' stories. And please leave a comment after reading. Challenges like this one thrives on interaction, feedback and encouragement. And we ALL need encouragement.

This Wednesday's prompts:
Villian
Visit
Bone
Stork
Memory
And/or

Imprinted
Human
Kink
Spring
Faithful

As I said some time ago, I have a story to tell, and I fear this might turn into one of my marathon-tales running over weeks and weeks before reaching its end. But I am writing again. I am happy!

Here we go. This is happening in the 3rd year on Unicorn Farm, in the short Shrove holidays - this was a thing in Denmark before the winter holiday in February was a thing, we had several single holidays spread over the year, the King and Queen's birthdays, Shrove Monday, Constitution day, and a bit more days in the Christmas holidays.

Susan knew a villain when she saw one, and Tristan certainly was one. Ever since Christmas holidays she, Heidi, Tage and Lis had been sure he was a bad one. Helge and the Flower power girls were almost convinced, as were the Swedish bunch. Now he once again had decided to visit Unicorn Farm over the short Fastelavns (Shrovetide) holidays. Susan wanted to get away. She had met a stray dog when arriving - she had needed some fresh air after a long day at school and at home with smoking family visiting, and then the dizzying portal, and had went for a stroll before joining the other apprentices at the Farm.
She sneaked a bone from the lunch and left. The bleak February sunshine was not exactly warm, rather with a promise of warmth to come, She walked along the dirt road engrossed in her own thoughts. Suddenly a big bird flew up. Was that a stork? Susan thought. No, no way, It's far too early. The storks only arrive in April. It must have been a heron or a crane ... bugger I always mix them up, the straight necked one. A crane Susan decided. Or maybe a swan. Swans, black swans ... they existed only two places in Denmark, she was told. In the moat around Castle Kronborg in Elsinore, she has seen these several times when crossing the castle grounds on her way to the beach. She still cherished the memory of one of the swans chasing off a fox one early morning. It had probably seen the cygnets as a quick breakfast, but it had not taken an angry mother swan into consideration. I had been one of the white ones, though. Black swans did not breed in Denmark.

She arrived at the small clump of trees where she had seen the stray yesterday. It had been OK, Susan had made sure of that using her animal skills, just wanting to be left alone. Susan though that it might be more sociable and hungry, today. She called for the dog, first with words, and then with her mind, but no dog came running towards her. Wondering Susan walked into the thicket. She found the place where the dog had slept, a shallow indentation, where the downtrodden grass still formed a nest-like structure, but it was quite cold. It had been dry for weeks and there was almost no chance of tracks, but Susan looked anyway. And yes, in the grass leading away from her she found what could me a path. She slowly walked along it, careful to keep to the undisturbed grass, looking at the ground. Her patience was rewarded with an imprint of a dog's paws where the thicket gave way to fields. Clear and sharp prints, not old. From here it was easy, the plowed fields was like an open book. She saw the dog chase, but never catch rabbits, looping back towards the thicket, remaking its mind, instead walking slowly - seen by the closer together paw prints - towards the short row of houses lining the road away from the water. Maybe they had been cooking something nice. Then she saw something she had not expected. Human footprints. Coming from the houses, standing still, meeting with the paw-prints, and then both set of prints walking away together, direction houses. This did not tally with the impression, Susan had gotten from the dog yesterday. "Leave me alone," it had told her. "I am weary, old and sad. I need time, time alone. Leave me, please."
A kink in the straight line of tracks, made Susan return to the barren fields. The sun, never high in the sky, was now nearing the horizon. At six she had to be back at the Farm. Three quarters of an hour left, her wristwatch told her. No time for dawdling.  She followed the traces onwards, now making a beeline for the small blue house placed a little distance from the others at the end of the row.
She walked onto the road, the field was cloggy, tiring to walk in, and she had seen what she needed to know where the dog was. Had the man kidnapped the dog? She had to know. It had seemed so listless, so sad yesterday. It should not end it's day as someone's plaything, or even worse one one of the places, Susan had heard of where they tested make up, drugs and medicine on animals. Susan was not sure the latter was true, she suspected her classmates once again were trying to pull her leg, but nonetheless, dogs were kidnapped now and then.
Walking on the road soon gave her steps back their spring, and she made good time getting to the blue house.

Behind the blue house, a small shed could be seen. This would be the perfect place to hide a dog. Susan passed the house and walked a bit further along before she sat down on a stone pulling off one shoe, as if to get rid of a stone. She cast about for traces of the dog. As she opened up her animal sense, she was almost knocked silly. The blue house had several animal inhabitants - and the dog was in there. In the house proper, not in the shed, along with cats, at least one owl, some amphibians, and rodents.
Susan suddenly knew the house, or at least she knew of the house. She had been here before. Years ago she bought a miniature grandfather clock for her doll's house. The wonder was that it was a real watch, faithfully keeping time ever since. She wondered if the clockmaker still lived there or what had happened.
... to be continued.

The last couple of days I have had trouble with Wordle.

Starting with Thursday's Wordle; Today’s average difficulty is 6 guesses out of 6, or very challenging. Sure ;) I did not even know the solution.

How many of you know this word:
Today’s word is QUASH, a verb. According to Webster’s New World College Dictionary, it means “to annul or set aside (an indictment). (From NYT Wordle Review).

Yesterday/Friday I messed up and instead of painlessly having guessed IDIOM - a word, I know and love - I had ZOOID as the only possible an impossible - explanation, because I placed O as middle letter on my paper instead of  I. Today’s average difficulty is 3.8 guesses out of 6, or easy breezy.
My guesses were:

I even resorted to Merriam-Websters' "Give me a word with ... " page, and lastly to Wordle Solver. I do not normally use those, as I think it is cheating, but I used both intensely in April for the A-Z Challenge.
They both agreed that ZOOID was the only possible word! But with O not going second, it simply was not right,

Then I realized my error and solved it with IDIOM - luckily  T  had been ruled out, else I had typed in IDIOT as that's how I felt.

 -  A  -  B  -  C  -

Today I fooled around - just for fun to see if just putting in words with different letters did help.
I put in BROCK - did not even know it was a word ;)  AGILE and DUSTY. Then I had B A I T as "yellow" letters.

Then I had to play and put in TABIS - my beloved ninja-boots event though I knew they were not the solution with S not being in today.

HABIT was the solution.

Today’s average difficulty is 5 guesses out of 6, or moderately challenging.

Colour of the Month June
Månedens farve juni

Til ære for mine overlevende gule iris i frøsøen er juni måneds farve "Overlevende irisgul"

-- 💛 --

In honour of my yellow irises survivng the drought in my Frog pond, the colour of June is "Surviving Iris Yellow"
I challenge you to find something containing this colour, photograph it, and post the photo on your blog one of the Sundays in June.

If you want to incorporate the colour into another challenge - for instance the Words for Wednesday - this is also fine.

If you have other ideas for the use, this is fine as well - and as usual with these challenges, most anything goes, only nothing rude or vulgar, please.

-- 💛 --

Today's Wordle ... I messed up. I put the correct middle letter in the second place in my paper, and only found one existing word, that could not be it. With one last guess left, I resorted to the "Find me a word" function in Merrriam-Webster, and only ever found the same one. Then I noticed my blooper - I wold have solved it way before, had I realized earlier ... Sigh. But I got it!

Wordle 1.441 6/6 - Today’s average difficulty is 3.8 guesses out of 6, or easy breezy. Sure - if you do not mess up!

Nye skrifftyper? - Blogger - New Font? --UPDATED

Now the comments should be the same size as the blog text proper. I found help on the Blogger help site and tiserted this small piece of code in my blog's HTML at the end of the #comments-variables (for me its at line 462) ... And the percentage can of course be made larger for even bigger comment texts ;)

#comments {
 font-size: 110%;
}

I hope this helps.

 - - - - - - -

River tells me: "I read your poem but had to use a magnifying glass, the letters here are so small now. Blogger has made changes and on my own blog I now have to increase the size too when I type anything."

I then suggest to use Ctrl and + to enlarge. This works, but also enlarges everything else. She says: "It works, but then it is so large I can't see the task bars. I wish Blogger would just leave things alone. When I type in your comment box, it is normal size but after it is published it is tiny."

Is this a River-specific problem, or is anybody else affected too?

I always enlarge blogs (and most anything) using Ctrl +, this enlarges everything, yes, but the text becomes of legible size before everything else disappears.

Please tell how it looks for you.

Poetry Monday :: Lead

Every Monday is Poetry Monday.

Mimi of Messymimi's Meanderings and I have taken over the hosting duties, mostly the supplying of the prompts - only temporarily we hope - while Diane at On the Border is taking a break for health and relaxation, travelling the world with her husband as far as we can tell.

We just hope she's going to take back over once she returns home.

I have something to ask of you: If you read this and the poetry of others via the links, would you please leave a comment.
Half - if not more - the fun of these challenges is receiving the responses of others
.

Today's prompt is Lead.
Whichever way I turn it, it's a heavy subject.
I can't eat it, so no epulaeryu.
I did what I sometimes do. I looked up lead at RhymeZone, and made a - not a  nonsense verse directly - but maybe disjointed verses would be a better description. Because all the rhymed pairs are good and even mostly true. We do need a new shed ... but the connections between the couplets? Maybe it's all just In my head.

In My Head - with Lead
I'm heavy as lead,
let me stay in my bed.
The words have all fled
no fun in my head.
We need a new shed
All the messes have spread.

But soon I'll sow seed
And follow the lead
of wisdom's good deed.
My hens I will feed
with every weed
and gather with greed
every egg in with speed.

The lead takes the lead
and writes of the deed
The big and the small
It tells of it all.

Sunday Selection: Rain

I torsdags så vores frøsø sådan her ud.
We have had dry times here. Thursday our pond looked like this.
Fredag regnede det 19 mm. 💧 Friday we had 19 mm of rain.

Saturday it only rained a little, 3 mm, but we emptied a blue barrel of rainwater into the pond, 120 litres
💧

Sunday was the yearly pligrimage - outdoors - and it rained

Søndag eftermiddag så frøsøen sådan her ud 💧Sunday late the pond looked like this.
Der må godt komme lidt mere regn 💧We still need a bit more water

Almost everybody had left. The final procession and blessings were shortened. The four men in black at the statue of Our Lady of Aasebakken is our bishop (in the red cap) two priests and the main altar server. Normally they're dressed for the occasion - it was too wet today.

20 maj 🐝 Biernes dag 🐝 Day of the Bees

🐝

20 May is International Bee Day. 🐝 Day of all bees, including honey bees. At least in Denmark, most people liking biodiversity are hating on honey bees at the moment. I always try to moderate this hate, with my 30 years as a garden keeper and a bee-keeper with and without wild bees and honeybees ... thinking, reading, watching and learning.

I've been "keeping" wild bees since I was a kid, and when I moved into our house, I went wild. I left dirt and stones in piles, I left uncut weeds, brush piles, old logs, last year's perennials ... in the corners. I've always had a lot of wild bees and bumblebees around the property.

Solitærbiernes huller i den vidunderlige trappe 🐝 Solitary bees' holes in my wonderful stairs.

humlebier i fuglehuset, 🐝 bumblebees in birds' houses,
og alle mulige og umulige andre steder. Men det var og er ikke nok.
🐝
Here, there and everywhere, still it was not enough. Listen to my tale of bees and woes.

🐝🐝

🐝

In Denmark, only bumblebees and honeybees live together in families, the rest are so-called solitary bees, that is, one bee, one nest. So even though I've always had a wild garden with room for all sorts of insects... not wasps though, they and children don't get along on my property... something happened after a few years in my own house.
Suddenly we had almost no strawberries or apples, and the ones we ad, were kind of curly and weird... I transplanted strawberries, I bought new plants, I fed and watered my strawberries, with no better outcome.
Then I went to a lecture on bees and pollination at the library. They showed pictures of strawberries that had been under bee-proof nets. It was a portrait of my strawberries.
When I didn't see a single honeybee - but plenty of wild bees - in my erantis the next spring, I started a little investigation. The result was that the local beekeepers had either moved away or gone into a nursing home. I grabbed a brush and set to work, and we had apples, strawberries, etc. again. This was not a permanent solution,, OK as long as apple trees grow one metre tall with 20 or so apples and the same for prunes and pears, but I hoped for my trees to grow! Some years later I had my first beehive ... never many bees, but enough. I no longer have bees, but luckily there is now another beekeeper with a few hives within 5 kilometres.

Mine bier flytter ind. 🐝 My bees moving in.

🐝

The following spring, I thought for a long time that the bees didn't bother to pollinate my apple trees, even though the hive was right underneath. It was just me being there at the wrong time ... they were only there between 9 and 10 in the morning
All bee species "go to work" in different plants at different times. Depending on both the pollen and nectar secretion of the plants and when the bees first discovered the plant.

 🐝 🐝

🐝

It's a balancing act. Honey bees can no longer survive in the wild in Denmark (because of the varroa mite), we need beekeepers with hives, But we should not have more honey bees than nature can support, on the other hand they are necessary for pollination of orchards and seed crops, because if the solitary bees are to do all the pollination, a lot of land must be set aside for bee housing.

Wordle was tough today, I find that it is a bit unfair. Today's solution is not even a word ... or only half a word!
Today’s average difficulty is 4.6 guesses out of 6, or moderately challenging.
Anyway, 4.6 is ~ 5. I am average Wordler again.

Poetry Monday :: Stem

Three years ago Messymimi had the right diagnosis for one of the things bothering me now and then: The Ookie-pookies. This is a general feeling that the universe is conspiring to make you as miserable as possible, with things you can't help, nor really complain about without sounding ungrateful and whiny.
Something like this: Everything is just plain old stupid. News, friends, family, social media, the nature around me, and even myself - everything is drab, boring, stupid. Nobody ever listens, Nobody ever understands anything. Everybody but me is going places and having fun. The one day I want to go to an outdoor event, is the one day it rains in a long row of sunshiny days. When I go to bed I have to go for a pee. When I go shopping the items on my list are sold out ... You know the feeling,
Today the Okie-Pokies have gotten me again. The weather is so nice, but now that I know rain will come stupid me then cannot enjoy the sunshine any more.
It sometimes happen, when the calendar is full. I need "breahing days" now and then. Days where everybody is at home, where weøre not all getting up too early, flying in each one directin and maybe not coming home for dinner. It's not even bad things, like dentists' appintments. It's birthdays. plant dyeing and fun things. But whne there's no days with nothing on them for too long, I get the Ookie-Pookies.

But ... it's Poetry Monday ... Let's try to poem the Ookie-pookies away:

It stems from nothing,
It goes nowhere
It is un-budging
It'll stay right here,
It'll be raining on me
and on my parade.
Till I get old and bleary-eyed.

Yuck: I can't even Wordle today.

Søndagsbilleder ~ Sunday Selections May 18.

Pretty flower pink. I found some pretty, pink flowers for today.

I bought this one. It was very dry, and needed water, now. That's why it is placed in my sink.

Denne her plukkede jeg.

I picked this one. I've never seen hawthorn with pinkish flowers befroe. I am trying to make it grow.

Denne her gror i domen.

I grow this one in the dome. Yes, it is pink. It is a pink radish, only it has grown very big. Soon it will be even bigger and have zillions of small, pink flowers, and later on delicious green siliques (pods).

Today I'm not your average Wordler. The Wordle Review tells me: Today’s average difficulty is 4.2 guesses out of 6, or moderately challenging.
I barely made it - I was so sure my guess number 5 was it, but no.

Fredagsfrustration ~ Store Bededag
Friday Frustration ~ Great Prayer Day & Wordle

Today is Friday in the 4th week of  Easter. Until now it was a holiday, Common (or great) prayer day, but again this year it is just another Friday. The Owlets are off to school, the Writer is teaching, and I'm  home alone with a sore throat.

I miss this holiday. It was a breathing space in the busy spring, he period for exams, digging, doing ...

It was so to say a "free" holiday. Nobody expected anything from us, the shops were closed, so no shopping, we were not having any guests, we were not supposed to go to church (this was a Protestant prayer day only 😉). Not a thing in the calendar, and when the day ended, I always have had this light, bubbly feeling: Tomorrow is only Saturday! This feeling - of a week with two Saturdays - I am sorely going to miss in years to come.

I really do not think that this feeling of frustration and loss will make me a better, more industrious citizen!

Wordle, you say - Ugh! No letters for soo long!
It seems I am an average Wordle-solver: Today’s average difficulty is 5.2 guesses out of 6, or very challenging. I'll check this out from now on if I remember ;)

Kajkage & Wordle og Store bededagssuk
Frog Cake & Wordle

For River and other Australian readers. Snapped in a bakery near me yesterday.
Kajkager. Kaj cakes.  Named after Kaj from the puppet duo Kaj & Andrea. But the actual cake is older, probably first made in the 1950es by the baker Kristian Hansen from Ry.

River told us about Australian Frog cakes here.

And here we have Kaj & Andrea:
http://downol.dr.dk/download/bonanza/thumbs/000048672.jpg
Andrea, the charming, cautious parrot
and Kaj, the jazz-loving boisterous frog.

Today's Wordle a big Fail. It was a totally normal word! And I could not guess it! I made stupid guesses, with bad letters or right letters in bad places.Yuck!
Looking at the Help page for Wordle, I feel a bit consoled: Today’s average difficulty is 7 guesses out of 6, or very challenging.

Words for Wednesday ~ May 14 & Wordle

- - A - - B - - C - -

This Wednesday's prompts:
Elbows
Imagine
Canal
Heavily
Population
    and/or
Mocked
Months
Annex
Support
Casino

I am slowly easing back into writing mode and continuing the story of Susan and the magic. I have an idea, only the words were not right. This is a warm-up, a prequel, something to get me into writing Susan's story again.
We're in the third year of Magic education at the Unicorn farm. Easter holiday maybe.
And as is my wont, I used all words in the order they were given.

Susan sat with her elbows propped on the windowsill and stared out into the blue beyond. She tried to imagine how life would be if she was allowed to move in at the Unicorn Farm, have a familiar and be a real witch. Every time she crossed the canal separating the island from the mainland she felt free and happy, and every time she went the other way, her heart was weighed down heavily by worries and speculations.

Thora had told them that witches and wizards made up a greater part of the population than they imagined, and that the Unicorn Farm was going to expand by opening up schools elsewhere as well.
100 apprentices was all the Farm on the island  had room for, even magically enhanced. and the trouble with buying foodstuff and suchlike for a larger amount of professors and apprentices would become insurmountable.

Susan felt mocked by the universe, as Brúnleit flew past the window. She was Thora's familiar, a short eared owl, in Icelandic a kattugla.

Susan's thought went back in time. She recalled when after months of work at an annex at a local hotel, her father had been invited to the opening ceremony attended by local supports and dignitaries. He had brought the whole family along, Mom, Linda and Susan. The most fun part had been the new casino and the bowling alley. But Susan still remembered her misgivings when somebody had mentioned that the annex had necessitated the felling of a small grove where some owls nested. Susan would have liked one of the owls as a pet, but she never told anyone. She was not even allowed a cat or a dog, so an owl would be unthinkable.

I did bad today, using letter, I knew were not in. Sigh. I forgot my Pen & Paper method, and furthermore today's solution was a word not in my active vocabulary.

Tirsdag, havearbejde & Wordle
Tuesday, gardening & Wordle

I finally got round to planting the dome squash in the big, wild garden. I also weeded the whole dome and planted chillies and aubergines out there. Weeding the dome produced large quantities of dill that were left to dry.

The pot of lemon verbena had a visitor who also came out into the garden. Does anybody know the name of the guest?
I also planted a normal verbena and two large artichokes into the same bed. Now we don't want any more frost.

We moved the chicken coop and I made a hatch in the top to throw weeds down through. What a great thing! It's so much easier to just throw them a dandelion now. The chickens are even eating quite large slugs, let's hope it continues.
We had five eggs again today and it's a pleasure to feed the chickens with the new hatch.

I picked sweet cicely, cow parsley, hazel leaves and a few sprigs of tickseed for plant dyeing. Half of it looks great, but the suspicious hanks are so not all wool.

Surbærrene blomstrer.
The Aronias (Chokeberries)  are flowering.

Der er masser af rabarber.
We have lots of rhubarb.

The angelica is big and strong. This year, you can't mistake it for aground elder. There's still a little valerian, it needs watching.

I saw and heard two larks and only heard a cuckoo - I never saw one, but I hear them often every summer..

Today's Wordle was tough. Not because it was hard to find a word, but because it had too many possible solutions. It looks fun:

Poetry Monday :: Shape & Wordle
Mandagsdigt :: Form & Wordle

Half - if not more - the fun of these challenges is receiving the responses of others
.

  -- 🟤 -- 🟫 -- 🤎 --

Today's prompt is Shape.

As I told, I found the Epulaeryu at ladyleemanila's blog during the A-Z Challenge. I still think I need some more practise in Epulaeryu - strange name with a strange explanation. I have shortened the explanation:

The Epulaeryu poem is about delicious food (The name is, I think, a mixture of Greek and Japanese).
It consists of seven lines and thirty-three syllables.

The form is 7/5/7/5/5/3/1 syllables, an
d the seventh line ends with an exclamation mark
.

We love Gingerbread cookies
Horses and snowflakes.
We mix flour and sugar
We beat in the eggs,
roll it out thinly,
grab a mould.
Cut!

  -- 🟤 -- 🟫 -- 🤎 --

ruller dejen tyndt
tag en form
tryk!

Sunday Selections ~ Plant dye & Wordle
Søndagsbilleder ~ Plantefarvning & Wordle

Pretty Flower Pink ... only it's not from a plant at all.

Cochineal    -    Walnut catkins    -   Sweet cicely    -    Japanese maple   -    Cow parsley

-- 🍁 -- 💚 -- 💛 -- 🩷 -- 🌿  --

The pink yarn came from the cochineal jar. It's always a joy to see all the colour fastened on the yarn - put in white yarn in pink water, pull out pink yarn from clear water.

The yarn with sprinkles was inside the bundle on top of the cochineal jar. It was rolled and steamed with red hazel leaves, tickseed sprigs, dried weld seed capsules and the cochineal from the pink yarn.

This green hank was dyed yesterday with red hazel and red beech leaves. The colours are different if you look close enough.

Wearing ninja boots in my wild garden ...

I could not find a good starter word for today. I chose Skies, because they were so blue. A bad choice as you can see:

EcoPrinting again ... and Wordle!
PlantePrint og NYT Wordle

This post contains hints to today's Wordle. Read at your own risk

The other day, biking home with the broom, plants and groceries, I stopped several times. Not because I needed a break (I did too) but because I spied some interesting leaves.
Next day I found my wonderful pot, two sheets of pre-mordanted, sturdy paper and some extra leaves from the garden. Among those a leaf from my Japanese maple (Which I thought I told of, but I can't find it), a red hazel leaf and a leaf from the newest arrival, the dark elder.

-- 🍁 --

Ikke kun for a hvile benene, men især for at plukke nogle interessante blade.

Sødskærm = Sweet cicely
Tjørn = Hawthorn
Japansk ahorn = Japanese maple
Vild kørvel = Cow parsley
Ahorn  =  Maple
Rejnfan = Tansy
Mørk hyld = Dark elder
Rød hassel = Red hazel
Jordbær = Strawberry

It was too wet, but I'm happy about the Japanese maple, less so with the dark elder.

-- 🍁 --

Inspired by Anne Nydam's comment and my answer to my Reflection post, I am going to continue solving the Wordle every day using a new word as my starter word - as I have done all of May so far - just to prove to myself that it can indeed be done with tolerable results. Pen and paper will have a work-out! Starter word divulged down below.
