Poetry Monday :: Big City :: in German and no Cities
~ Updated with more verses

Stikordene kommer fremover fra 365 Days of Drawing Prompts and other Arts.

- A - - B - - C -

Mimi of Messymimi's Meanderings and I have taken over the hosting duties, mostly the supplying of the prompts - only temporarily we hope - while Diane at On the Border is taking a break for health and relaxation, travelling the world with her husband as far as we can tell.

We just hope she's going to take back over once she returns home.

The prompts now come from 365 Days of Drawing Prompts and other Arts group. This is a Facebook group with a prompt for each day of the year, but no worries, the prompts will still be here and at Mimi's blog.

I have something more to ask of you: If you read this and the poetry of others via the links, would you please leave a comment.

Today's subject is Big City!

- A - - B - - C -

Today is Poetry Monday, the theme is Big City, but as I woke up this morning, a poem in German! was in my head. But why?

Nächtliche Konversation:
A - Ist bald der dunkle Nacht vorbei?

A - Und was ist's jetzt
B - Dreiviertel sechs
    - bald kommt das Morgengrauen
    - Schließ du bloß deine Augen

A - Jetzt scheint die helle Sonne rein

English literal translation:

Nightly Comversation
A - Will this dark night soon have an end?
B - the clock says only two
Lay yourself down and go to sleep
And wake in morning sunshine.

A - Now what's the time?
B - A quarter to six
    - Soon will the morning break
    - now you go back to sleep

A - And now the sun is shining brigth
B - You may get up now, time is right
A - Oh dear, I am so tired now,
    - an hour more will sit just right.

Dansk oversættelse:

Natlig samtale
A- Er den mørke nat snart slut?
B - Klokken er stadig kun to
Læg du dig ned og sov igen
Og vågn i morgensolskinnet.

A - Og nu, hvad er klokken nu?
B - Et kvarter i seks
    - Snart gryer dagens grå min ven
    - så luk du øjenene igen

A - Åh se, nu skinner solne klart
B - Nu står vi op, er det ikke rart?
A - Men jeg er træt, jeg ikke vil.
    - jeg sover lige en time til.

Today's subject is Under the Sea!

- A - - B - - C -

Ever since I composed the long poem for Awakening in my head and could remember all of it, I have tried to repeat this feat. It seems to have been a one-off.  I have in any case never succeeded in remembering all of my poem ever since - or indeed before.

Today with Under the Sea, I had an idea in the early morning hours when the dustmen woke me up with their normal noisy ways.

I "wrote" several verses and half-verses, hoping to remember them when it was time to get up. I might have remembered more, had I sat myself down to write as soon as I awoke, but life got in the way. So now I not so proudly present the two first verses and a general outline of the rest interspersed with rhyming pieces
:

Under the Sea
Under the sea
that's where well be
We will have fish,
not as a dish,
not on the table,
but in the stable.
That's where they'll be.

And every night
is lit so bright.
A moonfish hung
and starfish strung.
Over the table
hung on a cable
a lampfish-light.

Fun nights with swordfish fights and pufferfish dart, entertainment by clownfish ...

and seahorse races
to secret places

People under the sea, walking their sea-dogs, milking seacows and finding spectacular treasures guarded by lobsters whose bites are worse than their barks ... and factories driven by the sparks
of electric eels. Producing

papers so pink
and midnight ink

from squids and octopuses; to be used by

Poets like me
under the sea.

If time permits and my undersea muse returns, I will be back to add more lines later today.

Today's subject is Wonderful!

- A - - B - - C -

Wonderful and poem ... oh, sorry everybody. I can't beat What a wonderful world - even if I really do not like Jazz. I like this song very much.

What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed days, the dark sacred nights
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands, saying, "How do you do?"
They're really saying, "I love you"

I hear babies cry, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll ever know
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world

Yes, I think to myself
What a wonderful world
Oh, yeah

And as a bonus another "WHat a Wonderful World" This time by Sam Cooke:

Don't know much about history
Don't know much biology
Don't know much about a science book
Don't know much about the French I took

But I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me too
What a wonderful world this would be

Don't know much about geography
Don't know much trigonometry
Don't know much about algebra
Don't know what a slide rule is for

But I do know one and one is two
And if this one could be with you
What a wonderful world this would be

Now I don't claim to be an 'A' student
But I'm trying to be
For maybe by being an 'A' student, baby
I can win your love for me

Don't know much about history
Don't know much biology
Don't know much about a science book
Don't know much about the French I took

But I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me too
What a wonderful world this would be

History
Biology
Science book
French I took, yeah

But I do know that I love you
And I know that if you love me too
What a wonderful world this would be

Today's subject is Don't be afraid

As ofteh when I do not really know what to write, I found words that rhyme and make something strange. This here peom ended in a totally unexpected place.

This life is just small things galore
- Don't be afraid
Enjoy them, do them, there'll be more
- Don't be afraid
Small things are big and not a chore
- Don't be afraid
Small things deligth me to the core
- Don't be afraid
The polished stones upon the shore
- Don't be afraid
The birds that sing and fly and soar
- Don't be afraid
Wet baby footprints on the floor
- Don't be afraid
A strange knocking at my door
- Don't be afraid
A newborn Child that we adore.
- Don't be afraid.

We just hope she's going to take back over once she returns home.

In order to to continue this challenge and not overexert ourselves - we want to write poems and goof around a bit, not spend time pulling out our hairs over forgetting to find new prompts - Mimi and I have decided to latch onto the 365 Days of Drawing Prompts and other Arts group. Today's subject is Bisquit.

But you won't get a poem about biscuits. Because yesterday, the Writer found a big, beautiful toad in the garden. It peed on him, as toads do, and after we had all admired it, it was put out in the dome.

Many years ago, the Owlets and I made one of those nonsense verses that are fun to make and pop up from time to time over the years. It's running through my head now, so here it is
:

Peeing toads are toady-peeing almost all day long
and in between they sing us all a crazy toady song.

To make up for the brevity and inanity of the poem, you'll have a photo of the toad.

- -  A  - -  B  - -  C  - -

Poetry Monday :: Building ~ Should have been LONELY

Service announcement:
Today is actually the 4th of August - for which date we have the prompt Lonely.
But I erroneously used this prompt July 28th. The prompt then should have been Building, the last from Mimi and me. It seems this prompt disappeared as we went from June to July.
And as promised I'll write a poem next Monday - today - with Building as a prompt. And from now I promise to be more careful in my copy/pasting of prompts - be it for Poetry Monday or for Words for Wednesday!

- A - - B - - C -

Today's subject - in my world - is Building.

They're building a shed
it is white, green, and red.
I wait for the finish
for windows and door.
Our mess will diminish
When there we can store
our bikes and our tools
our ladders and stools.
Our apples in crates
and hang our skates
in their laces:
There'll be smiles on our faces.

Poetry Monday :: Lonely ~
Opdateret med dansk digt

Service announcement:
Of course yesterday was not the 4th of August - for which date we have the prompt Lonely.
It was July - still is - and the date, as announced by my date header, is the 28th.
I blame my old eyes, new PC, and crazy times.
Rightfully the prompt should have been Building, the last from Mimi and me. It seems this prompt disappeared as we went from June to July.
I'm not going to write a new poem for this Monday, but instead write a poem next Monday with Building as a prompt. And from now I promise to be more careful in my copy/pasting of prompts - be it for Poetry Monday or for Words for Wednesday!

Today's subject in my world! is Lonely.

Late Summer's Lament

One lonely swallow does not make spring
It takes a flock for Spring to bring.
I hope the geese don't do the same thing
to fall
because this time yesterday I saw
them all
fly Southward while I watched in awe.
But y'all
It's far too early now for fall
I want to swim, to run and drink
the sun.
In autumn with its winds and pall
no fun
is to be had by hungry me - cold days stink!

Og på dansk

Sensommerklage

Today's subject is Salt. This made a song from John Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice chase its tail through my brains ... only the "salt" refrain is from the Danish books and does not exist in the English version :)

NOTE:
Only the refrain was remade by me; the verse cited here are the ones most alike to the Danish version and written by John Flanagan in one of the Ranger's Apprentice books, I think it's from The Sorcerer of the North.

    Greybeard Halt, Greybeard Halt
    Worth his weight in salt.
    Greybeard Halt, Greybeard Halt
He makes the thieves at fault.

Greybeard Halt, he lost a bet
He lost his winter cloak
When winter comes, Halt stays warm
By sleeping 'mongst the goats.

    Greybeard Halt, Greybeard Halt
    Worth his weight in salt.
    Greybeard Halt, Greybeard Halt
He makes the thieves at fault.

Greybeard Halt is a fighting man
I’ve heard common talk
That Greybeard Halt, he cuts his hair
With his saxe knife and fork!

    Greybeard Halt, Greybeard Halt
    Worth his weight in salt.

Læs mere om Elfje her.

Park
I made an Elfje. This is a type of verse that's easy to write, and not too boring to read, I hope. The rules are quite simple. Five lines, eleven words, distributed like this:
  1. One word. This word symbolizes a colour or feature. The word sets the atmosphere.
  2. Two words. expanding on or describing line 1.
  3. Three words. Giving more information about the person or the object. You describe where the person or the object is, who the person or what the object is, or what the person or object is doing. This sentence usually starts with the word ‘he’, ‘she’ or ‘it.’
  4.   Four words. Something about yourself in relation to the person or the object. This sentence is your conclusion.
  5.   One word. This word is called the ‘Bomb.’ It is the essence of the poem.
Read more about Elfjes here.

Trees

and a lake
A place to relax.
Park.

And in Danish ~ Og så på dansk

Scram
I thought about a boy called Scram, and his friend Trick, a smaller girl. They are a mischievous pair, and are up to no good in this nonsense verse.

Oh, Trick and Scram
they run and ran
just to catch the train.

The train was big
but Jane and Dick
had filled it up with rain

Riding to town
the rain fell down
and Scram and Trick and Dick

Filled up the seats
with flower seeds
For Jane and them to pick.

Uniform

Today I went with a free-form verse, as I do not like uniformity nor uniforms 😜

I like to goof around, test things out.
I know I stick out from the crowd
and has learned to live with it.
Uniform!
A word of double meanings,
Clothing for scouts, soldiers and schoolboys,
Or constant, unvarying, consistent.
My solving of the day's Wordle
Is uniform, day after day,
Almost always four guesses
Just like today.
Uniform!

And suddenly an Elfje surfaced. You'll get that one as well.

Alike.
Always unwarying
A boring idea
For a curious mind.
Uniform!

Possible

Many thing we do is the art of the possible, and in order to to continue this challenge and not overexert ourselves - we want to write poems and goof around a bit, not spend time pulling out our hairs over forgetting to find new prompts. For this reason Mimi and I have decided to latch onto the 365 Days of Drawing Prompts and other Arts group. This is a Facebook group that gives a prompt for each day of the year. We'll do this, beginning on the first Monday of August - and no worries, the prompts will still be here and at Mimi's blog as well.

I have for some time been using their prompts for a Haiku a day. So to make it easy on me today - editing and gardening take up most of my time - I'll present some of my crazy haiku:

11. maj 2025. Face in the Water
Face in the water                                 Marskens vand er fyldt
strange lights between the far trees.    Med sære ansigter
Wanderer beware!                               Lygtemænd lokker.

12. maj 2025. Land Pirates

En tørlagt pirat.                        Hydrophobic Pirate
Kornmark i stedet for hav        Cornfield for the seven seas
bølger i vinden.                        Still there are waves.

13. maj 2025. Dew on grass
Dew on grass, wet feet            Dugvådt græs kilder
Hungry chicken awaiting        Sultne høner venter mig
Happily I run.                         Klukkende af fryd.

20 maj 2025. Jail
Iron-bars and keys                    Tremmer og nøgler
lock me in, but my thoughts    og vold holder mig fanget,
are my own, and free.              men tanken er fri.

21. maj 2025. Water Witch
The witch of today
is busy casting her spells
W - A -T - E - R

30. maj 3025. Children's faces. - A not-haiku
Children's faces in the rain
will they ever smile again?
Children's faces in the sun
We are having loads of fun!

June 6, 2025. Textures of a Summer day
Sunrays through green leaves            Solstråler på blade
Coffee break in the garden                kaffepause i haven
Smiles, cakes ... and rain.                  smil, kager ... og regn.

June 8, 2025. An Eye for an Eye
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth
Look in the mirror.

June 9, 2025. Skewed Ideas
A skewed idea                        En tosset idé
A tickle shooter, to make        en kildepistol der får
Your enemies laugh.                 fjenden til at le.

Poetry Monday :: Sting

Tie stille.

Sting made me think of a half forgotten Danish children's riddle song. I never heard it sung, but I could recite it by heart. My memory is a strange fellow. I tried to re-create it in English. It's not the same, but close.

Riddles for the very small
The little bee, the big, big sun?
They can sting
And what can every man and child?
They can sing

The branches and the violets?
They can nod.
The horses and the dogs and cats?
They can trot.

And weather bad and fortune good?
They can shift.
And boats on lakes and clouds above?
They can drift.

And mice as well as elephants?
They can pee.*)
And what can you as well as I?
Quiet be.

Poetry Monday :: Captain

Heller ikke andre engelske end "Oh, no John":
My father was a Spanish captain
Went to sea a month ago
First he kissed me then he left me
Bid me always answer no
Oh, no John, no John, no John, no

Ay, ay sir, Today is Poetry Monday, and rhyming we must go. But Captain ... It was strangely missing in my list of prompts, and it is one of those words. I do not know why, but some words immediately make a song run around in my brain like a do chasing its own tail. Captain is one of these, having me listen to "Oh, no John" on repeat.
This is counterproductive for any poeming, so all I have to give today is a repost from September 19th, 2022 - Pirate day, where Dread Captain DeMeza organises the fun.

September 19th we celebrate Talk like a Pirate Day! Which happens to be a day celebrated in the online game World of Warcraft too.

In that other world where oft I go
For rest and relaxation
It's Pirates day today. YAHOO!
We have some recreation

A mug of rum, or maybe two
To end our deprivation,
Forget the fights with friend and foe
Now I'm a pirate too!

Ol' Chumbucket then spoke to me
A word of truth and wisdom.
Dress like a pirate halfway be
To talk like one - perfection!

So 'hoy there, matey! it'll be
Instead of "Hello darling".
And should I like a cup of tea
Yarrr! Tea! you'll hear me snarling!

Today's prompt is Lead.
Whichever way I turn it, it's a heavy subject.
I can't eat it, so no epulaeryu.
I did what I sometimes do. I looked up lead at RhymeZone, and made a - not a  nonsense verse directly - but maybe disjointed verses would be a better description. Because all the rhymed pairs are good and even mostly true. We do need a new shed ... but the connections between the couplets? Maybe it's all just In my head.

In My Head - with Lead
I'm heavy as lead,
let me stay in my bed.
The words have all fled
no fun in my head.
We need a new shed
All the messes have spread.

But soon I'll sow seed
And follow the lead
of wisdom's good deed.
My hens I will feed
with every weed
and gather with greed
every egg in with speed.

The lead takes the lead
and writes of the deed
The big and the small
It tells of it all.

Poetry Monday :: Stem

Three years ago Messymimi had the right diagnosis for one of the things bothering me now and then: The Ookie-pookies. This is a general feeling that the universe is conspiring to make you as miserable as possible, with things you can't help, nor really complain about without sounding ungrateful and whiny.
Something like this: Everything is just plain old stupid. News, friends, family, social media, the nature around me, and even myself - everything is drab, boring, stupid. Nobody ever listens, Nobody ever understands anything. Everybody but me is going places and having fun. The one day I want to go to an outdoor event, is the one day it rains in a long row of sunshiny days. When I go to bed I have to go for a pee. When I go shopping the items on my list are sold out ... You know the feeling,
Today the Okie-Pokies have gotten me again. The weather is so nice, but now that I know rain will come stupid me then cannot enjoy the sunshine any more.
It sometimes happen, when the calendar is full. I need "breahing days" now and then. Days where everybody is at home, where weøre not all getting up too early, flying in each one directin and maybe not coming home for dinner. It's not even bad things, like dentists' appintments. It's birthdays. plant dyeing and fun things. But whne there's no days with nothing on them for too long, I get the Ookie-Pookies.

But ... it's Poetry Monday ... Let's try to poem the Ookie-pookies away:

It stems from nothing,
It goes nowhere
It is un-budging
It'll stay right here,
It'll be raining on me
and on my parade.
Till I get old and bleary-eyed.

Yuck: I can't even Wordle today.

  -- 🟤 -- 🟫 -- 🤎 --

Today's prompt is Shape.

As I told, I found the Epulaeryu at ladyleemanila's blog during the A-Z Challenge. I still think I need some more practise in Epulaeryu - strange name with a strange explanation. I have shortened the explanation:

The Epulaeryu poem is about delicious food (The name is, I think, a mixture of Greek and Japanese).
It consists of seven lines and thirty-three syllables.

The form is 7/5/7/5/5/3/1 syllables, an
d the seventh line ends with an exclamation mark
.

We love Gingerbread cookies
Horses and snowflakes.
We mix flour and sugar
We beat in the eggs,
roll it out thinly,
grab a mould.
Cut!

  -- 🟤 -- 🟫 -- 🤎 --

ruller dejen tyndt
tag en form
tryk!

By now I think that you all know that I love limited poems, like Haiku, and Elfje. During the A-Z Challenge, I found the Epulaeryu at ladyleemanila's blog. I think I need some practise in Epulaeryu - strange name with a strange explanation. I have shortened the explanation:

The Epulaeryu poem is about delicious food (The name is, I think, a mixture of Greek and Japanese).
It consists of seven lines and thirty-three syllables.

The form is 7/5/7/5/5/3/1 syllables, an
d the seventh line ends with an exclamation mark
.

Sometimes the competition
is in the kitchen:
Dicing and shredding veggies,
slicing meat and fish,
chopping fine herbs, and
steaming rice
Roll!

Can you guess what's being made here?

rul!

Poetry Monday :: Jam

I have something to ask of you: If you read this and the poetry of others via the links, would you please leave a comment.
Half - if not more - the fun of these challenges is receiving the responses of others
.

Poetry Monday. Jam ... all I can think of is the trouble variety of jam, as in "in a jam". And then one of my own poems start running inside my brain. The song is a repost from November '22, but the backstory is new.
The lines: "I got myself in and I'll get myself out." comes from the Pern books by Anne McCaffrey, where we meet Piemur, a boy of small stature, but a grand scale troublemaker, and very likeable. Once upon a time there was a forum for discussing all things Pern-related, and Brenda Appleby posted there, singing songs of Pern to her own tunes and often her own lyrics supplementing those from the books. Her rendition of "The Question Song" was exactly how I had imagined in my head. She and I were both intrigued by Piemur and his trouble and we agreed that the sentence
"I got myself in and I'll get myself out." would be a great refrain for a troublemaker's ballad.
I do not know if she ever wrote this song, if she did, her version will be miles better than mine, as
I do not think I did justice to my idea ... but then again aren't plans always bigger, better, more ...
So I present:

The troublemaker's ballad.
I get in a pickle as often as not
I get into trouble, yes that is my lot.
I don't want to do it
I want to be good,
To help just a bit
To lighten the mood.
That they'll find me out, I know without doubt
But I got myself in and I'll get myself out.

When things they go wonky they just call my name
"Don't try to explain now, excuses are lame"
I did a good deed,
At least as I think
Where I saw the need,
But they say I stink
That they'll just blame me, I know without doubt
But I got myself in and I'll get myself out.

I got in a jam now so many a time
The mess and the trouble, the hot spot is mine.
And when I defend
my righteous deed,
they say I should mend
my ways and my feet.
That they'll find my faults I know without doubt
But I got myself in and I'll get myself out.
