The rain had stopped. It had become a nice sunny late summer'ss day. The Owlets were playnig in the garden, when a customer came to buy eggs. MiniMax went to gather them and returned with 4 - from 7 hens, not great. Afterwards MotherOwl tended the hens, scrubbed the watering thingy, gave them new sea shells, changed the bedding in the nesting box. I counted the hens, only six!
MotherOwl: "Minimax, when did the hens get away last time?"
Minimax: "Yesterday, when the girls wanted to buy eggs. I caught two."
MotherOwl: "Did you count them?"
Minimax: "Yes, there were six. I thought the last one were in the nesting box."
MotherOwl: "Don't think. Count! Now we have to go looking for the last hen, or maybe its feathers."
MotherOwl and Minimax went looking. But the Owlery's garden is full of exciting places, so after a short time of intense looking they picked raspberries and blueberries, gathered fallen apples, admired the first pumpkin ever and began to water the green house. MotherOwl found out that the broken automatic watering system was clogged by algae. She dismantled it and took it to be washed.
But as she walked, she heard a strange sound: Cluck-cluck-woof-cluck-woof! She looked into the neighbour's yard and saw a brown hen - the lost one - outstretched wings flapping trying to evade the neighbour's German Shepherd. MotherOwl dropped the watering apparatus and ran. She ran past Minimax, filling up watering cans, he looked up, and MotherOwl gasped: "The hen. Come!" MotherOwl ran on, past our outhouse, into the street, past neighbour's outhouse into their drive, past another outhouse and finally into the yard. The hen was still alive. MotherOwl found her angriest, most manly voice and scolded the dog: "Bad doggie. Stop it! Go home!" Not very coherent, the dog already was at home, but it grasped the meaning, cringed, tucked its tail between its legs and left the hen alone. The hen fled behind the shed and Minimax after it. Minimax and MotherOwl ran around the shed, and whenever the dog saw us it looked extremely guilty. In the end Minimax got hold of the poor hen, and it was carried home in triumph. All seven hens had fresh dandelions for a treat.
We went back and picked up all the goodies from the garden. Later in the afternoon MotherOwl visited the bramble patch and picked a little less than a kilogram of berries. It might actually have been a bit more than a kilogram, as MotherOwl and the Owlets - Minimax mostly - ate of the delicious berries before they made it to the kitchen.
