TUSAL No More

For some years -- since December 2015 to be exact -- MotherOwl has been an erratic participant in the TUSAL (Totally Useless Stitch-A-Long) hosted by Daffycat.
But for the last couple of moons Daffycat has been busy. In short, there's almost no TUSAL posts on her blog any more, everything is happening on Facebook. And as MotherOwl is not a fan of Facebook, she's sadly and reluctantly stopping her participation in this fun Stitch-A-Long.

 Today is the new Moon of May 2021.

Everything is green outside now. I't wonderful, and yesterday the temperatures were finally over 10 Celsius! What is TUSAL: It is an acronym for Totally Useless Stitch-A-Long. See my explanation HERE and follow the link to Daffycats blog for more.

TUSAL - April 2021

 Today is the new Moon of April 2021.

Now Spring is at long last on its way in this hemisphere. In the southern parts days are getting cooler.

Sprouts are green, and analogous to green cheese, new soap is also called green soap in Danish. Apart from that this soap actually has a green tinge:

Hampefrøsæben er kommet ud af formen og skåret i sæber
Hemp seed soap, now demoulded and cut.

I går var det nymåne, TUSAL dag - jeg har en eneste stump at vise frem - og den er grøn!

Today is the new Moon of February 2021. And the Chinese new year - the year of the Ox.

     I dag er det nymåne. Det er kinesisk nytår, oksens år starter, og så er det TUSAL-tid.
     Og hvad er så TUSAL? Det er en forkortelse for Totally Useless Stitch A-Long - totalt nyttesløs sy-kreds.
     Man gemmer alle sine fraklippede garnender, tråde og så videre. Alt det, man normalt smider ud, og putter dem i en fin beholder. Hver gang det er nymåne, tager man et billede af beholderen og enderne, skriver en blogpost om dem, og linker til nedenstående.

   I den forgangne måned er det ikke tråde og garn, der har fyldt mest. De fleste ender stammer fra min  vinding  af plantefarvet garn i pæne nøgler. Men her er i hvert fald februars stumper:

TUSAL 2021 - UPDATED

Daffycat is back! YAY I'm so going to post here and comment on her blog each New Moon!!!

I would like to give a link to Daffycat's original post on WHAT IS TUSAL when she took up the challenge.  Here below is a re-worked description:

TUSAL means Totally Useless Stitch-A-Long. The idea is to save all our ORTs and show them off every time the Moon is new.

What are ORTs?
  ORT or ort ~ Capitalized, it stands for Old Ratty Threads. These are the cast-off thread ends a needleworker, knitter, crocheter and other with yarny endeavours cut away. These ends are sometimes saved in clear jars as a decorative object.
  The word, "ort" does appear in the dictionary, meaning: a bit of something left over; usually concerning food.

Why would you save your ORTs and why on earth post a picture on your blog?
   Just for fun!  If you would like to join this Totally Useless Stitch-A-Long, please go to Daffycat's blog. We also still have the TUSAL Facebook group.

How and what to post?

1. Get a glass jar or other container and save your thread clippings. You may also include fabric trimmings, thread bands, empty spools, broken needles (take care), or any other cast-offs gathered along the way.
2. You may continue filling this jar throughout the year OR you may empty the jar and start over each month ~ no firm rules here!
3. On (or about) each New Moon take a picture of the ORTs in your jar and post it to your blog and/or the Facebook Page. This is a blog/Facebook game so YES, you MUST have either a blog or be on Facebook to participate.
4. You can use your current ORT jar or jars. This is not a contest! There's no prize, it's just for fun.
5. You should post a picture each New Moon, even if there has been no "progress" to show. We are aiming for "once a month" here ... no whippings for being late, early or absent!
6. When you have posted the picture of your ORTs visit my blog and comment on my ORT report for that month's TUSAL.

When to post?

  We follow the Lunar Cycle so every year these dates change! Some years they are very evenly spaced, one New Moon each month and some years have 2 New Moons one month and skip a calendar month altogether!
  2021 is a nice year. One new Moon to each month.

For long I have not participated in the monthly TUSAL - Totally Useless Stitch ALong - originally hosted by Daffycat, but now migrated to Facebook. And that's the reason why I have not participated. I don't do Facebook much these days, and I most certainly do not go to my newsfeed which is one big mess because the neat RevertSite does only work on groups etc. not on the newsfeed any longer.

TUSAL #49 and probably last

What is TUSAL? Go HERE and see.  Short explanation: Save all your ORTs when stitching, sewing, knitting, crocheting etc. Show them off once a month, on the day of the new moon. It was Wednesday. I'm late. Sorry.

 Then why is this TUSAL post probably the last? The reason is twofold. First, our great leader Daffycat is taking a blogging break and is no longer hosting TUSAL - at least for the time being. Nobody has taken over, and thus the TUSAL has become a Facebook thing.
  This leads to reason number two. Facebook is changing its lay out as well. going from this:

and this probably means, that I am going to leave Facebook. I do not want to wade through an endless ocean of  self-advertisement and irrelevant stuff to get to what matters to me.

Yesterday was the new Moon.

I have not been making much because of those stupid health issues, but the glass is a bit fuller than it was.

Nytårswoowlies

  Det er efterhånden en tradition at Uglemor sye en woowly eller to til nytår. Denne gang kom Skribenten med en skjorte, der var helt slidt op. Den havde en pæn farve, stoffet var interessant, og så sad der nogle mærker hist og her. Uglemor så straks et woowly-par for sig og gik i gang. Nok engang er den oprindelige opskrift fra Moonstitches blevet modificeret. Denne gang er bunden blevet større. Det pynter, synes Uglemor.
  Woowlien til højre kunne måske godt have fortjent lidt mere fyld. Der er noget komisk over parret her. 

  For some years now MotherOwl has made a woowly or two to celebrate the new year. This time around The Writer discarded an old shirt. It was worn out. But the fabric was interesting, the buttons shiny and it had small labels sewed on. MotherOwl saw woowlies, salvaged some not so worn pieces and began sewing.
  Once again she modified Moonstitches's original pattern, this time making the bottom circle larger. Better, MotherOwl thinks.
  Maybe the rightmost woowly could have used some extra stuffing, but they are a funny pair.

January TUSAL

All my ORTs so far this year:
 

  TUSAL is a Totally Useless Stitch ALong begun by Daffycat. It is still uncertain, what is going to happen, as she has been busy.
  But as today is the new moon of  January, I am posting my ORTs here for all to see.
  They all come from the stitching of a Christmas temari; inspiration - nah pattern, I just copied - from Dana at From My Wandering Mind. She makes this 1000 times better than I, so pop over and have a look. Also even if she instructed perfectly in how to make colonial knots (instead of French knots) I still did not get it to work. They were teeny compared to the leaves, not like Dana's beauts, and got ripped out again.

      Det ser ud til at Daffycat har forladt bloggeriet, så måske bliver der ikke mere TUSAL.
       Men alligevel ... her er i hvert fald nymånedatoerne for det kommende år, et fint år med en nymåne per måned.

     Bare for at vise, at jeg skam har produceret stumper, bare uden at blogge om det. Stumperne i dette glas vil snarest ende som temari-fyld.
     Prikkerne er Braille (blindskrift). Der står TUSAL. Bare fordi jeg kan, og især for at fejre Louis Braille, der har fødselsdag i dag.

TUSAL maj 2019

     Uglemor flyver stadig rundt fra den ene browser til den anden. Der er ikke nogen, der er rigtig gode længere, men der skal jo ske et eller andet.  
     Da Uglemor så skulle ud og lukke for hønsene i aftes så månen sådan her ud.

MotherOwl is still flying from one browser to the next, trying them for their nesting properties. None of them are greatly satisfying, even after extensions and customizing.
But MotherOwl is not sitting in front of the computer all day long, other thing happen as well.
As MotherOwl went out to shut the hens in for the night, the Moon looked like this.

      Og da Uglemor så så havde kameraet fremme og kom i tanke om at nymåne jo betyder TUSAL - så måtte det jo tages et billede af stumperne også.
     Uglemor undskylder for den lidet charmerende baggrund. En hvid plastikpose var det der var i nærheden. Alle de her stumper stammer fra fabrikationen af hashi-bukuro - stof-etuier til spisepinde. Mere om dem i de kommende dage.

And now I had found the camera, and remembered that new noon means TUSAL. I had to find my ORTs and snap a photo of those as well.

Excuse the very un-flattering plastic bag used as backdrop.  All these ORTs come from the sewing of hashi-bukuro - wrappers for chopsticks, more about those later.

     Nu håber jeg at Daffycat snart lægger sin TUSAL post op. Jeg har ingen ender endnu, for det der neverkont-strik er ikke færdigt, enderne er ikke hæftede og derfor ikke klippet af endnu.

 I hope Daffycat will soon post her TUSAL post. I have no ORTs to boast of this month, as my entrelac knitting endeavour is still not finished, the ends are therefore not darned in and snipped off.

TUSAL -- Februar 2019

     Årets stumper hidtil. I trådfangeren ligger resterne fra vantestrikningen og to strimler fra en turkisgrøn T-shirt. Bøtten, fra julens pebernødder, er fuld af stumper fra fletningen af den fine kugle.

All this year's ORTs so far. The threadcatcher contained ends from the knitting of the mittens of to strips from a turquoise T-shirt. The big jar, once containing Christmas cookies, now holds all the leftovers from the making of the tea bag bauble.

     Lysende ugler pynter på hylden, nu julepynten endegyldigt er fjernet.

Golden owls with ligth brightens the shelf now that all Christmas ornaments have been removed.

TUSAL -- 1 -- January

Som jeg skrev her, er der 13 nymåner i år. Nu er vi så nået frem til den første nymånedag. Men da det  nye år kun er 6 dage gammelt, og det oven i købet stadig er juleferie, er der ikke meget i bøtten.

As I wrote here,  this year is a year of 13 new moons. Now we've reached the first one. ORTs-wise not much has happened. We're only 6 days into a new year, and Christmas holidays will end tomorrow.
 

     Mine stumper lever virkelig deres eget liv, de kommer og går. Hvis nogen finder på at sammenligne stumperne fra år 2018 - glasset på det venstre billede - med TUSAL-indlæggene fra 2018 vil de finde ind til flere uoverensstemmelser.

My ORTs have a life of their own. They come and go as they like. If somebody were to compare the ORTs of 2018 - the jar in the photo to the left - with my TUSAL blog posts from 2018 they'd discover several discrepancies.

       Og hvor kommer de røde ender så fra? Uglemor er ved at strikke sig et par nye vanter. De helt gamle (strikket tilbage i 2011) holder ikke længere, og de nye (strikket engang i 2016), er dumme, den ene er for kort, den anden for smal, og så er det to venstrevanter! Hvad Uglemor lige tænkte på, da hun strikkede dem, er ikke godt at vide. Nu er det i hvert fald tid for et par nye.

And from where do the red ORTs come from? MotherOwl is knitting a new pair of mittens for herself.  The old ones, knit in 2011, were worn out some time ago. And the new ones, supposedly knit in 2016, are just so wrong. One is too short, the other too narrow, and then it's two left mittens. What were you thinking of, MotherOwl? Time for a new pair!

     Her er så begyndelsen på de nye vanter, de er strikket i alpakkagarn men efter idé til Skribentens lovikkavanter. Og de er stadig gode!

 The new mittens so far. They're knit from alpaca yarn, using the lovikka-tecnique, which I used for the Writer's mittens, and they're still warm and cosy.
