Friday Frustration ~ Bakeries

Da vi flyttede ind i nærheden af Helsinge for snart længe siden, var der - ud over supermarkedernes bake-off og et bageri i Kvickly - et herregodt bageri & konditori ved Gadekæret.

When we moved here, long ago now, we had an excellent bakery, called the "Village Pond Bakery & Tearoom". Of course the local supermarkets also sold baked goods, but for cakes, this was where you went. 


Det er der ikke længere. Efter en periode med skiftende ejere - hvoraf den sidste var den fantastiske Sir Bake-a-lot, der åbnede i september 2018, men måtte lukke på grund af helbredsproblemer i juli 2019.

This was long ago. After a period of rapidly changing owners the last and best - Sir Bake-a-lot - had to close down for health reasons in 2019.

4. maj 2023 åbnede så den polske bager. Han lukkede for godt en uge siden, 6 august 2025. Der var åbenbart ikke kunder nok.

In May 2023 our Polish bakery opened. But sadly he had to close about a week ago. People did not buy enough bread and cakes there.

Det synes jeg er sølle i en by af Helsinges størrelse. Byen selv er på knap 10.000 indbyggere og har et stort opland. Der burde være basis for en god bagerbutik her.

I think this is lousy. Helsinge is not the largest of towns, but it has almost 10,000 inhabitants in the town proper and a big hinterland - lots of rural area surrounding it - and it should be possible to run one real good bakery here.

New Computer Troubles & Wordle

Now I have some new, innovative, creative, hitherto unknown, ... troubles with my Blogger.
  • This browser - that I normally use for blogging - do remember who I am, but keeps on crashing whenever I delete anything, and the Ad Blocker does not work with Windows 11.
  • My other solution, Firefox, is stellar when it comes to AdBlocking and deleting. but it cannot remember who I am, forcing me to log in every single time I want to comment somewhere, or write a blog post, or ...
I do not know what's worse, and I have tried all the usual things to solve this, restart, clear cache and so on, log out and in again, and any combinations of these you can imagine, to no avail. My tech savy son, who helped me install it all, is on a holiday, so ... I'll just have to wait till he returns, I suppose.

Happy 4th of July

Today is the 4th of July. Independence day. In 2022 this was a Monday, and for Poetry Monday that year I wrote the following. I think it could do with a repost.

I feel attached to this day in special ways. One paternal great aunt went to America, and often came visiting, so we celebrated July 4th. This day is also celebrated in Denmark in Rebild Bakker - the largest celebration of July 4th outside of America.

For me this day also commemorate the value of human rights.
  Even if I'm not American, these sentences from the  Declaration of Independence make me go misty-eyed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
  I'm appalled at how many are ready to only let some, select individuals have these Rights. They should be for everyone; refugees, sickly, unborn, disabled ... And I feel chafed and hurt by the discrepancy between picnics,  fireworks and buntings on on side, and digital dehumanizing, shootings, abortions, neglected sufferings of refugees and elderly ... on the other

A service announcement:
- Due to strange happenings in the interweb, my comments on most blogs, including my own, seem to disappear in thin air between my pressing Enter and their publishing.
I try to copy/paste before pressing Enter, mostly it looks fine in my end, but when I return - hours or even days later - the comment plain is not there any more.
This is a major P.I.T.A, not least because it makes me seem discourteous, not commenting on any of your blogs.

And I looked. Nothing in the spam-comment place either.

I Quit! ~ Jeg giver op!

     Den 4. maj skrev jeg om at jeg havde fundet nummer 014 hos naboen og set nummer 015 - hele to gange faktisk. Lige siden har jeg ledt efter 016 uden held - altså over en måned.
     I fredags så jeg 017, 018, 019 og 020 i den rækkefølge! Så er det nok!
     Og måske ser jeg nu den bil senere i dag, så ombestemmer jeg mig nok.

In May, May 4th actually, I wrote about seeing car 014 at a neighbour and the 015 twice. Ever since I have of course been on the lookout for 016 over a mont now, and I haven't seen it.

This Friday I went shopping and I saw 017, 018, 019 and 020 in this order! That's it. I quit!

And just maybe later today I'll see this car and re-make my mind.

Kajkager. Kaj cakes.  Named after Kaj from the puppet duo Kaj & Andrea. But the actual cake is older, probably first made in the 1950es by the baker Kristian Hansen from Ry.

Today's Wordle a big Fail. It was a totally normal word! And I could not guess it! I made stupid guesses, with bad letters or right letters in bad places.Yuck!
Looking at the Help page for Wordle, I feel a bit consoled: Today’s average difficulty is 7 guesses out of 6, or very challenging.

This time I took the photo myslf on April first. Normally the fountain in Helsinge is "dressed up" for this day, but not this year. Hence the name - Missing Green.

Åbning af - 💙 - Alma - 💙 - is here

   Her er en montage af Almas nyhedsbrev fra forleden. Det glæder Uglemors hjerte at se, at Thise er iblandt varerne på hylderne i Alma.

Our new supermarket, Alma, opened today - in Copenhagen. It is supposed to be a substitute for the one closed down by orders of January 31, 2023, when I wrote:
my favourite supermarket chains rearranges and in the process closes down the branch where I have been going for things like coffee, tea, yoghurt, pasta, rice and biscuits ... Soon only cheap, lousy discount remains.
MotherOwl is glad to see that her favourite brand of milk is to be on the shelves - best taste & the only one not adding things giving me a stomach ache to their lactose free products.
   De andre to er mindre interessante. Noma er Økologi og ... for fuld udblæsning, og Uglen drikker ikke vin.
   Men den nederste sætning giver stort håb for fremtiden: "Og dette er bare begyndelsen. Foruden almas egen økologiske kaffe, almas kvalitetste og selvfølgelig almas indkøbsnet vil hylderne være fyldt med spændende, smagfulde og grønne varer, som vi håber, at I vil komme forbi og kigge på og måske endda købe."
     Kvalitetste ... det lyder lovende. Jeg savner vore gode gamle indiske eller Darjeeling te fra dengang Irma fandtes. Vi har prøvet snart alle andre med varierende grader af skuffelse.
      Uglemor håber også på at finde gode kiks og vafler, forskellige kødudskæringer, ost, sære frugter og grøntsager ... da det kun er et madmarked, skal vi stadig jagte fryseposer, vaskepulver, hårshampoo, skurepulver, ja alt sådan noget husholdning- og rengøringshejs i alle mulige butikker.

The other two brands they promote, I'm more like well no thanks. Noma is a fancy, vegan-gourmet-unusual stuff brand. I find it expensive, and moreover it's filled with FODMAPs (beans, lentils, and pulses). And wine, MotherOwl is not a fan of wine, period.

But the last sentence gives me more hope again: "This is only the beginning. Other than Alma's coffee, good tea, and shopping bags our shelves will be bursting new, tasty and green goods. We hope you'll come and have a look, and maybe even buy some."

Good tea sounds promising. Ever since Irma closed, we've tried to find a substitute for their Indian or Darjeeling teas. I think we've tried all other teas available, with varying degrees of disappointment.

There's much more I hope to find there, biscuits, wafers, cheese, meat, unusual fruits and greens, ... this is to be a food market only, so no use looking for machine wash, shampoo, cleaning and household products of any kind.

  Nyhedsbrevet fra åbningen i dag ... meh.
  Det virker som lige det, jeg frygter Alma ender i. Økologi og ... vegansk, luksus, og eksklusive varer, men det er måske det, der hører hjemme i ugens tilbud på Frederiksberg. Jeg venter, til jeg har været derinde og kigge selv.

It is actually my fears for this supermarket come true. Organic and ... vegan, luxury produce, exclusivity, single estate. But then again the supermarket opened in the posh part of Copenhagen. I'll most decidedly hold my judgement till I've been there and looked for myself.

I only used some of the words, as can be seen. Not in any particular order either. 

A Friday a few weeks ago I had an appointment in a big city. I arrived about an hour early because even if it was snowing the trains and buses were less delayed than I had expected. So I hoped I could do some shopping. The first two errand were quickly done, as the places were either closed for repair or for holidays.
     I also needed some minor items that were sold out or not in stock in my small town. First I went to some Target-like shop. They had one of the items only, cheap, but equally poor quality. The bookshop had the same item only, but in a super-luxury edition; and I won't pay more for a notebook than for a nice meal at a restaurant! Then I went to a big supermarket advertising that they carried everything. They did, but what a mess; No price tags, things in a jumble on all shelves ... luckily I found a scanner and checked the prices. Both items were reasonable, and the notebook was on sale. They were both the last of their kind. There were more notebooks, but only dark pink ones!
     With twenty minutes to my appointment, I got in line. There were TWO manned tills open, and queues as long as my arm. Oh well, my appointment is just around the corner and down a street, maybe three minutes, I can make it.
     Ten minutes later, the brand new employee at the till had served one or two customers, and it was the same at the other till. Another employee walked by and I asked if he could please open another till. "I'll try," he replied and ran off to the left. A little later, he passed by again, this time closer to the till, and a man asked the same question and got the same answer. I looked at the clock ... five minutes to go. When I looked up, he was helping one of the two customers at the self checkout. I looked around in despair.
     There was my way out! I spied Exit without payment, Complaints & Customer Service written on a sign above an exit. "I'll go there," I thought, "and let them look after the goods until I can return and pay." At the door I was quickly let through by a smiling young man. But then ... there were at least twenty people with numbers in their hands waiting to be served, and behind the counter a single tired and dejected-looking young man. What to do now? I wound my way through the crowd towards the take-a-number thingie -- and the exit.
     Then I thought "What the heck!" and just walked out, still with my unpaid items visible in my hand. Nothing happened, no beeping and no one shouting at me.
     I rushed across the road, down the side street and up the stairs, just in time to put the goods in my bag before my name was called.
With a shock I realized I was now a criminal, then I grinned at how easy it all was - and then I woke up.

Today's prompt is Never say never /  Christmas/Hanukkah
My really pissed of poem comes after a couple of days where first a teacher ended in a shitstorm for telling her pupils that santa does not exists, then I went to a second hand place to shop for Christmas ornaments. I found: Santas, elfs, baubles, reindeer ... not ONE SINGLE baby Jesus, no wise men, not even an angel. Next day I found a Holiday tree online! And in this same place earlier, we were treated to Eid mubarak and Happy Hanukkah. Everything seems OK except for the Christian version ... that one is out, it seems.

I was as already told, quite pissed after this, so ...  if you're not in for a very grumpy verse ...  just stop here.

The days are running swiftly,

The Season here is winter,

Ensretning af holdninger ~ Unification of Thoughts

Uglemor plejer ikke at være politisk her på bloggen, eller noget med den slags holdninger i det hele taget, men en i øvrigt informativ artikel på TV2 gjorde mig opmærksom på  i hvor høj grad mainstream og den offentlige mening har monopol på taleretten i Danmark.

MotherOwl is usually not into politics, or anything of that kind on this blog, but an otherwise informative article on TV2.dk made me realise to what extent the mainstream in public opinion still (or again) sets the agenda in Denmark.

I Danmark er det jo nærmest ikke en debat.
Nej præcis - og derfor fatter danskere ikke, at der er nogen - mange måske endda - helt normale amerikanere, der stemmer på Trump ene og alene fordi han er imod abort.

     Faktisk chokerer hans udsagn mig mere, end jeg lige vil være ved.
     Vi er en hel del danskere, der deler den opfattelse, at abort er mord (vi synes ikke nødvendigvis, at Trump er vidunderlig, eller er enige om en masse andre ting), men ud fra dette har jeg indset, hvor ensrettet den danske politiske og moralske scene er.
     Der er én rigtig mening, der er nok grader, nuancer, undtagelser ... men sagen har én løsning - og hvis du ikke er enig, er du en ikke-person.
     Det kan godt være, der er 11 partier i folketinget, men virkelige uenigheder er der ikke mange af. Det er mere hvordan, vi når målet, de diskuterer, ikke målet i sig selv.
     I virkeligheden er Danmark lige så absolutistisk som mange af de lande, der lå bag jerntæppet i gamle dage.

This is one of the reasons Danes are shocked that normal, sane people (like a lot of the persons behind blogs I'm reading) can ever imagine voting for Trump just because he's against abortion. 

And this reality of his shocks me. We are actually quite a number of Danes sharing the opinion that abortion is murder (We do not necessarily think that Trump is the man, nor agree on a lot of other things).

But this made me realise just how very homogenous the Danish political and moral scene is. There's one right opinion, there's degrees, shades, exceptions - but the matter at hand has one solution - and if you do not agree, you're a non-person, not asked in polls, not interviewed in the papers, not represented and not seen.

Our big fights only happen when the public opinion cannot agree as to what is the political or moral high ground.

We have a lot of parties for every election here - there's 11 parties in the Danish parliament - but the opinions are not as divided. Almost all agree on most questions, the discrepancies are more in the means to the goals, in just where is the limit and such.

In reality Denmark is as absolutistic as many of the countries behind the Iron Curtain of old.

All what the words made me think of was this moralistic rant - Quirky Owl at large.

I'm trying to convince my co-humans that education never stops. If we do not exercise your brawn and brain every day, and pick a new slice of matter frequently, it is the same as to decide to regress, to fall into disrepair and forgetfulness. Use it or lose it goes for all areas of our mind and body.

Craft is one of the good ways of keeping fit mentally and physically, having a big lively family is another.

Time and again I feel I am beating a dead horse, but nothing will stop me figuratively yelling at people. And some won't ever listen, some only when neglect have brought them on the ropes, some do not even heed this wake-up call, but stays in the sofa with Netflix and chips handy.

Jeg prøver at overbevise mine medmennesker om, at uddannelse aldrig stopper. Hvis vi ikke træner både muskler og hjerne hver dag og vælger en ny skive af emnet med jævne mellemrum, er det det samme som at beslutte sig for at gå i forfald. Use it or lose it gælder for alle områder af vores sind og krop.
     Kunsthåndværk er en af de gode måder at holde sig i form mentalt og fysisk, at have en stor livlig familie er en anden.
     Gang på gang og igen føler jeg, at jeg slår i en dyne, men intet vil stoppe mig i billedligt talt at råbe ad folk. Og nogle vil aldrig lytte, andre kun når de er helt ude i tovene efter længere tids forsømmelse, nogle lytter ikke engang da, men bliver i sofaen med Netflix og chips ved hånden.

Today I once again wrote to Blogger via the in-game Help and Feedback system.

Here's what I wrote (slightly edited for typos and clarity):

Well, yesterday I had an actual spam-comment advertising online shopping and what not - what happened? It was just published, not put into spam prison.

Today River commented, as she has been doing for years - what happened? Her comment was once again put in spam prison.

"Dear" Blogger - you need to update your AI or better yet ditch it!
It's easier for me to delete the one real spam a month, than letting River, Mimi and all my other regular commenters out of spam jail several times a week!

Poetry Monday :: Distancing

Poetry Monday is a challenge, normally hosted by Diane at On the Border. But from Monday, January 8, 2024, Messymimi and I have conspired to keep the chair warm for her, as she's taking a break due to health issues. We will each set the topics for one month, I began with January, Mimi supplied for February, and so on until Diane returns.

Today is
 Distancing - at least in my place it is now 4 years since Corona close down.

And once again even if this was my own prompt, I had a hard time writing anything. I ended up writing a very moralistic, harsh and angry poem. I was not proud of it, and pre-scheduled my post to one minute before midnight - giving myself time to find a more gentle approach. This obviously did the trick. This is a much more positive approach on the same thoughts.

Fredagsfrustration ~ Blogger!

    Blogger er i gang igen. Det seneste døgn har jeg befriet fem kommentarer fra spam-fængselet - deriblandt en af mine egne, og flere der var uger gamle.
    Blogger? tror du virkelig at jeg spammer min egen blog? Eller at folk der har kommenteret her i årevis pludselig er spammere? Eller at jeg bare lader spamkommentarer stå i ugevis ... nej vel?
     Det sker naturligvis ikke. Så Blogger, bare stop!

Blogger is at it again. In the last 24 hours, I've freed five comments from spam jail - including one of my own and a couple from weeks ago.

Blogger? Do you really think I'm spamming my own blog? Or that people who have been commenting here for years are suddenly spammers? Or that I leave spam comments for weeks on end... no, really?

Of course I don't. So Blogger, just stop!

Fredagsfrustration - virkelig vred!

I dagens nyheder er der denne her:
     Hvorfor fanden har vegetarer/veganere den slags rettigheder, når jeg som allergiker og intolerant indlagt på sygehuset ikke kan få noget som helst at spise, fordi der ikke tages hensyn til den slags?
     Undskyld mig, men vegetarer bliver altså ikke decideret syge af at få lidt kød, hvor allergikere faktisk risikerer mere eller mindre alvorlige reaktioner fra mavepine, hjernetåge, svimmelhed, opkastninger til allergisk chock.
     Jeg bliver da nødt til at finde ud af, hvor man får den lovgivning udstrakt til naturligvis også at gælde allergikere, før jeg rammer plejehjemsalderen.

In English
Vegetarians and vegans obviously have a rights to have vegetarian/vegan food while in hospitals, kindergarten and so on.

This makes me pissed off because I and others like me - suffering from allergies and intolerances - are often unable to eat anything at a hospital.

And bugger it vegetarians or vegans won't get seriously ill from eating something containing butter or other animal products, whereas people suffering from allergies will get reactions ranging from stomach ache, brain fog, dizzy spells, vomiting, to full blown anaphylactic shock.

I'll have to find out where to have this legislation also available for allergies and intolerances before I get to the age where public care is needed.

Why?

Normally MotherOwl is not a political creature, but some news I just have to share

First: The Extinction Day Calendar:
Extinction Day Calendar - Meaning just this. The day on which the given species will most probably be extinct.

Then:
Temperatures and wet.

January was the hottest Janyuary - ever. I know, it's in Danish, but numbers and pictures speak all languages.
And here's one in English.
The tunnel at the station at the end of January. Since then the waters have only risen, ant there's now around 15 cm left until the water reaches the roof of the tunnel.

Poetry Monday :: A Pet's Life

   Poetry Monday er en udfordring, hvor Diane fra On the Border er vores vært.
     Dagens tema:
Et kæledyrs liv får den gnavne Uglemor frem. Der er alt for mange kæledyr her i landet, og der bliver taget mere hensyn til dem, end til mennesker og menneskebørn. Det gør mig gnaven!
     Og så lader det til at  det lakker mod enden med Mandagsdigte. I hvert fald skriver Diane at 1. januar 2024 bliver hendes sidste Mandagsdigt.

A Pet's Life makes me bitter, grumpy and what not because A pet's life in Denmark is privileged. The fur babies often take precedence to human beings and human children.


And it seems Poetry Monday is about to end, at least Diane says that Monday, January 1, 2024 is her last Poetry Monday - as copy/pasted below.


Fireworks at New years' might delight
the small ones.
But the dogs take a fright
They're begones.

Thick ice on the lake where we skate
would be nice.
But the 20 ducks' fate
Is worth more than ice.

Biking through the woods are safe
Road is not.
But the leashed dogs strafe
And they will trip us up.

Or without a leash even they run
Here and there
I'm in control says the man,
Hope it finds a red deer!

The pets are dieted and led to the vet
And kept fit.
The children are pampered, oh let
him have some more of the s...!

Poetry Monday on a Tuesday ~ The Bus

Today I'm playing catch up, nothing hurts overmuch, no pressing jobs, the dust bunnies can wait.

First a haiku The Bus. Sparked by the fact that the new schedules, coming in two weeks, improve the transit times ... on workdays between 7 am and 6 pm where the conditions are already tolerable (4-5 minutes and 3 buses an hour), but changes nothing in the daytime during the weekend, where we have one bus an hour, and TWO minutes to run from the train under the tracks and to the other end of the station - That is if the tunnel is not filled up with water, then we're in for an even longer detour. Much more about this -- in Danish only -- Friday for Friday Frustrations.
