Our Christmas was nice and quiet, well as quiet as possible whit four happy Owlets, Big Sister, GrannyOwl and the Walrus eating goose, dancing, singing and opening gifts. Some of MotherOwl's gifts were:

I also got my new computer, and am now almost done moving in. I still miss MS Word and I found a new photo editing program able to make funny pictures. I have been playing.
I have also been knitting, as the left picture shows, the mittens for Marsupilami and the Pirate are done, but still need a washing. They're smelly, the Owlets insist. Granny, from whom I inherited the yarn, was a smoker.

Dear friends, have a blessed Christmas.
This is an automated post and the last I will be posting from this old computer, MotherOwl's Christmas wish is a new one; a new, used one that is. This old one has been too small for a long time. Every month I have to place old photos on a USB memory stick to make place for new. And as I take a lot of pictures; a new, used computer is the right gift. For some days MotherOwl will be busy moving in on the new - for me at least - bigger computer, and celebrate Christmas. I suppose some days will pass until blogging be resumed.
Right now the advent candles and the date candle are burning to catch up. The goose is in the oven, the Writer got it yesterday from a nearby farm, it is stuffed with homegrown prunes and apples. We also eat red cabbage cooked with vinegar, redcurrant jam, sugar, salt and spices. This concoction is heating and the potatoes are boiling. Later some of them will be glazed in our own honey.
The Owlets are decorating the tree, helped by their big sister, who has come home for Christmas. The Walrus is keeping GrannyOwl company over a cup of coffee, and Trolli is playing the piano. MotherOwl is searching for the last of the presents to wrap. I always find such good gifts during the year, and then hide them where curious Owlets do not look. Often I forget where that special place was, and some years gifts has totally disappeared, not showing up until midsummer.
After eating all this good stuff, we'll dance around the tree singing Christmas carols and hymns. Then the gifts will be opened, one at a time with everyone looking, it takes a long time in our big family. Then we'll eat dessert - risalamande with cherry sauce ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Risalamande ) and hope for Trolli to get the hidden almond, as the gift is a book he wants. (Donald Duck Christmas Classics - From all of us to all of you). Then we all look at, play with and admire gifts, eat some more candy , look longingly in the crib where no Christ child is yet to be seen. He is not there until midnight. Christmas day we'll go to mass, talk with friends and wish them a blessed Christmas.

Her er tønden.

MotherOwl has been saving yarn for years. But now is the time. This stash has to diminish, not grow. Let's see if MotherOwl can knit a lot - and stay away from second hand yarn. Stash bashing is the term MotherOwl learned from Crunchy Catholic Momma
- - - - -
Two pair of mittens almost done. The big pair for the Writer needs a hand wash to even out the stitches, and the pair for Marsupilami needs to have all the tails - aka ends - woven in. I could have knitted them in, but forgot to do it, sigh, I hate weaving in ends. Once I even tried to bribe my smaller sister to do so for me with some big granny squares. I promised her what would now be 5 € per square, and she said NO!

When MotherOwl reached the bottom of the barrel, what did she find? Some of the granny squares, still with the ends not woven in. The rest of them are now a spread for Pirate's bed, and he asks for it every night. MotherOwl did not imagine this when she crocheted the granny squares as a 16 years old school girl.

Strikketirsdag -- Yarn Along

It is working. Having to link to Small Things - or not in case no knitting was done this week - seems to help. The mittens for the Writer are done, and MotherOwl has cast on a pair for Marsupilami.
Minimax was interested in knitting, so I taught him how to after casting on for a hat for him. I could not have done better myself, he is a natural knitter, knit and purl and never dropping a stich or making a mistake. I knitted one round for him, and it's like knitting my own WIP.
Reading: An old science fiction anthology from 1981, but it's a reprint from 1961 - 64. I wanted Trolli to read "The Wall around the World", which made a big impression on me when I first read it long ago, and then I re-discovered a lot of the stories ... In the Owlery one wall of bookcases is dedicated to SF and Fantasy, it was no mean task to find one novel in that place ;)
All the yarn for these projects come from the stash, MotherOwl has a barrel full of yarn. It is an old, repurposed barrel, once it contained soap flakes, and when it was thrown out MotherOwl picket it up and carried it home to put all her yarn in. Lots of yarn, gifts, inheritances and bougth - mostly second hand - but now Mother Owl is going to use it!

Dråberne på arbejde -- Droplets at work
It is not a big surprise - or indeed a surprise at all - that MotherOwl has many ideas. It is also not a surprise that she has a hard time keeping at one thing until done. To remedy this she has hung a picture over the monitor, right where the eyes will wander when MotherOwl stares out into space.
This was made during a productive period in my life, when I actually lived after this proverb, and I think it is easy to see that I was a better artist then than I am now, where so much else has taken my time. That's why this picture has retaken its former prominent position on my wall.

Luciadag -- St. Lucy's day

In Sweden, and increasingly so in Denmark, St. Lucy's day is celebrated with hot buns and singing children dressed in white walking in processions with candles and singing. The buns should be served piping hot for breakfast, but that's not very owly. We serve the buns when it fits into our day's program, and today it was after a late dinner, as the Writer had a meeting till late. But they were the real thing with saffron and finely chopped almonds, very good. (Recipe se further down). They are also very good next morning, especially toasted and with butter and honey.
One interesting fact. In connection with the St. Lucy's procession on the Owlets' school the Headmaster told them of St. Lucy's life, and later, while kneading the buns, MotherOwl heard an interview with some schoolchildren, retelling her legend as well. They were actually encouraged to know about a saint's life. That's new in Denmark, and good news at that
St. Lucy's buns - enough for 7 persons as a dessert or for tea with a few left for next morning
200 g butter
600 ml milk
50 g yeast
½ ts p saffron (or 2 tsp turmeric)
1 t sp salt
150 g sugar
100 g almonds, blanched and finely chopped
25 g raisins (may be omitted)
2 egg
1250 g flour
Raisins for decoration
Melt the butter and pour in a bowl with the milk, add sugar, almonds, saffron, egg, salt and yeast (check the temperature first, if too hot the yeast will not work) Add flour, but not all at once, Knead well and leave covered to raise for half an hour. Knead again, split in 16 parts and form into shapes like the letter "S" and like shapes, stick a raisin in the obvious spots. Let raise for 30 minutes, coat with milk or lightly beaten egg if you like, and bake for 13 - 15 minutes at 200 degrees centigrade.

Hvad nu? --- Now what?
MotherOwl and the Owlets have been making strange objects again. What's this? And no. It's not soap again ;)
Smagen fejler ingenting i hvert fald.
MotherOwl has been reading "Little House in the Big Woods" aloud for the Owlets, and as it was cold and snow, we decided to make maple candy. We looked in the book, and just boiled the maple syrup while stirring occasionally until a drop on a plate turned stiff. Then MotherOwl poured it over the snow which the Owlets held in cups and bowl.
Then the rest went into candy forms. The syrup poured over snow became rubbery, maybe -4 degrees centigrades is just not cold enough ;) and the small men and candy canes are flaky like, disintegrating when you bite, but the taste is fine. Not a bit was left over from the snow ones, and only because MotherOwl evilly hid some away did a few small men survive until today.
We wonder if it's supposed to be like that. Not at all hard like normal candy but flaky and granulated
The syrup is from a big tin of maple syrup, we only used about half of it. Maybe we'll try again today, it's now 7 below zero and getting colder ;) I like snow!

Strikketirsdag -- Yarn Along

yarn along. Starting over again. After knitting and frogging at least one whole mitten, MotherOwl has knitted this far on the first of the mittens for the Writer. At least it's quick knitting on needles size 6. The yarn is plant dyed in four different yellow-green hues a couple of years ago.
Reading well not very much. It is snowing.

Hvad var der så i formen? -- What was in that mould?
- - - - -
The Owlets were not happy because this special mould is not a cake mould. It's a soap mould. The contents are here unmoulded and the rough edges trimmed.
MotherOwl tried for a marbled soap, this is the most marbled edge. Another failure, She'll be back. The soap as such is not a failure, only the marbling of it.

Snestorm -- Snowstorm
Photos from December 9th. The radio promised snowstorm, and it snowed so much that we did not leave for church. It was very beautiful.

Fundet og en gåde -- Found, and a Riddle
Mother Owl found the old bag. Here's a picture, I'm not very proud to post it, and do so hesitantly. But when you look at it I'm sure we can agree that a replacement was due, even overdue.
Gåden -- The Riddle
When MotherOwl came in carrying this cake mould, she was not greeted with enthusiastic sounds from the Owlets.
Hvorfor var Ugleungerne ikke begejstrede?
Why was the Owlets not happy with this?
Svaret kommer snart ...

Klemmepose -- Bag for Clothes Pegs
Today I had to make a new bag for our clothes pegs. The old one was a gift from my mother when we moved into the Owlery (19 years ago, and it was worn out. And to top it Trolli misplaced it a couple of days ago. I''m not scolding him as I have misplaced a letter box during the make over of the Owlery5 years ago. I still have not found it ;)
A thing I frequently use when making projects from ironing beads to flattening drawings or leaves to sewing spreads for our bed, is this mini ironing board (for which I do not know the English name). It is super handy and I bought it for the Owlets long time ago, so that the could feel grown up and iron with mummy. The only one who have ever done so, is the Pirate - my youngest - and while I waited for him to come along, I discovered the versatility of this small board.

I harbour anything but warm feelings for my new electric sewing machine. It make me use words not suited for the tender ears of the Owlets. When I try to sew more than tree layers of fabric - like today four double layers of tea towel and the woollen band, the needles bend or break and the thread makes a zillion small loops on the backside. I had an old, very old, sewing machine it was able to do this and more. It has been my maternal grandmother's, she had 5 children, four of them sewing girls, then my mother inherited it, and then me. No my mother is not dead, but she bought a new electric wonder. Then I used it for many years. Now it stands - broken - in my attic patiently awaiting the day I win a fortune in the lottery ...

Advent

Today is the first Sunday of Advent. In the Owlery we have a big advent calendar. The big window in our living room is partitioned into 26 big squares. And every day beginning on the first Monday of advent - but not on Sundays, where there is a small gift for each of us - one of the Owlets pick a bag at random and hang the ornament contained therein in the designated square.
For the days 6th - St Nicholas, 8th - Immaculate Conception, 13th St. Lucy, and 24 - Christmas eve, the bags are red and marked with the date. They contain an ornament picturing or symbolizing the saint/ feast of the day. We also have a green bag for the first snowfall, it is not always in use.
From the 17th to the 23rd there have always been a small square with the O antiphons, but MotherOwl is re-thinking this, as it never worked.
From time to time MotherOwl will add new pictures of the more decorated window.

Dagens overraskelse -- Surprise
Today the mailman brought a letter for MotherOwl. It was a surprise in so far as MotherOwl had forgotten she was promised this:
This supplement was presented to Herman van Rompuy at his visit to Denmark 11.th of May 2012. He is a haiku writer, and read some of his own haiku at the presentation. MotherOwl was not able to attend, and had forgotten all about it, until today, that is. The Haiku in this booklet are bilingual, Danish/English. And of course MotherOwls contribution has been added to the Haiku page.

Dråbehistorie: Istapperne -- The Icicles and the Droplets
Next story about the Droplets is done: The Icicles I think I'll have to hurry to "publish" a book in November. But on the other side, how thick is a book supposed to be to be a book?

Hjemmelavet chirashi-zushi
Homemade chirashi-zushi - spread out sushi - made
of sushi rice, smoked salmon and bellpeppers in bits. As a side, chicken broth
with noodles. It tasted so much better than supermarket sushi, and it is not as time consuming as the nice rolls.

Haiku - Now also in English

11 years ago MotherOwl got interested in all things Japanese, and started writing haiku. Some of them are even written in English, or more exotic languages. I had them on my Facebook, but a week ago I delete all my pictures there. Now some of the Haikus have gotten a new home here at Krydderuglen.
Haiku-publishing is another of my November projects this year. The haiku page is prone to updates in miscellaneous languages without notice.
3 of my haikus were published laast year in an anthology of Danish Haiku writers.
Rød paraply er arbejdstitlen på min haikusamling.

Uglehjerte-skabelon -- (Update) -- Owly hearts template
This should be it. Remember to place the dotted line on a fold. And not least if uing a paper where the pattern or shades of colour means anything, one of them have to be a mirror image. Is't not as easy as it seems, but if at first you don't succeed.

Hvornår giver jeg op? -- Where do I give up?
- - - - -
When I have to learn something new or have to do some hard work, I have this graph inside my head:
Det ser nok nærmere sådan her ud:
- - - - -
This model tells me, that if I work for X hours, I'll get to the end -- whatever that might be -- with a steady progress.
The sad thing is that this model only works inside my brain. The reality looks more "bumpy" with plateaus and maybe even setbacks. And when I feel like I'm getting nowhere, I have the very human tendency to give up. This tells me that I often give up at the end of a plateau, just before progress will show again. I think it might look like this really:
- - - - - - -
Do you notice the double bump rigth before the end. That is my weak point, where I normally give up. Or was it at the big bump halfways?
This graph is very encouraging. I just have to remember that this is how it looks in real life.
