P ~ Photographier

A - Z

Every day at noon (except Sundays) a new A-Z post goes live - or no post today.
The theme for this year is
Resilience as given by the team, with my subtitle Flowers, Trees and Ancestors.

P for Photographier / Photographies

The youngest son of Lars the blacksmith and Karen the survivor, was Hans Christian Larsen and he is my great-great-great-grandfather. In the 1845 census, we find him as apprentice blacksmith at his father's and married to Maren Kirstine Andersdatter. We can see that she was born same year as her husband, but in Vordingborg.

I told briefly about her baptism earlier, when I talked about the new church registers and vicars and their illegible handwriting. I wrote:
---
1818: 10 - 27 __ (slash repeats February from above) - Maren Kirstine Andersdatter - Apr. 1 in the Church - Anders Nielsen Grocer in Nyraad Market Town and wife Stine Nielsdatter.
What is written about the godparents I have not copied.

We know now about Maren Kirstine that she was a daughter of the grocer in Nyeraad and his wife Stine.
Nyeraad is / was a comparatively small town in the parish of Vordingborg. I found the grocer and mother Stine in the 1834 census, the first after Maren Kirstine's birth in 1818. Maren Kirstine had left home by then but we can see the grocer, mother Stine, and two younger sisters.

And please notice that Stine now is Stine in this census. For letter G I told that she was erroneously read as Ane. Now the error has been corrected, and this makes me more willing to tell of future errors I might find. Thanks to Danish Family Search once again.

I do not know much more about the Grocer and mother Stine. But for me it is Maren Kirstine who is the interesting person.

She is the reason I have braved old church registers, censuses, and newspapers written in German script or Blackletter, and old vicars' scribbles often marred by fire, water or inkblots.

The family history tells of her as a wise woman of Remkolde, where the smithy was situated. And this should be the reason why she had her Photograpy taken and published in the local paper (Nestved Tidende). I had hoped to find the relevant issue of the newspaper before today, but no such luck. At least you can see her here.

Maren Kirstine Andersdatter
Nyraad 27/2-1818 - 21/4-1907 Remkolde

If the photo as tradition will have it, was taken around 1901, she is in her eighties.
