Only the Words

Word for Wednesday is a challenge that was started a long time ago. Now it has turned into a movable event with Elephant's Child as our coordinator; and the Words provided by a number of people.

The general idea of this challenge is to make us write. Poems, stories, subtitles, tales, jokes, haiku, crosswords, puns, ... you're the boss.
Use all Words, some Words, one Word, or even none of them if that makes your creative juices flow. Anything goes, only please nothing rude or vulgar.

In September  River will supply us with prompts.

It is also a challenge, where the old saying
"The more the merrier" holds true.

So Please, remember to follow the links, go back and read other peoples' stories. And please leave a comment after reading. Challenges like this one thrives on interaction, feedback and encouragement. And we ALL need encouragement.

This Wednesday's prompts:
Shipwreck
Hook
Unexpected
Buttermilk
White-knuckled
Buggy

I do not want to begin any more wild goose chasin' chapters of Unicorn Farm, so I'm taking it slow, trying to find somewhere where I can cntinue the story, using these words. I need inspiration and ideas.

Words for Wednesday UPDATED & IWSG

Oops, I was bleary eyed Wednesday evening. I forgot to press Publish before going to bed. Hopefully it's still Wednesday somewhere ;)

This Wednesday's prompts:
Conviviality
Adoration
Willpower
Mellow
Gentle
Guitar

And writing happened again.

With the burial of some of the magic people: M-L, Kai, Martine, and more at the Unicorn Farm,
I have been thinking over the religious aspects of the magic community.
It is obvious, to me at least, that magic and religion has a whole lot in common.

We are never explicitly told so, but there's a magicians' graveyard out there too; we have a small giveaway in Percy's words in the "Kai"-chapter.
"The next time you come here ... you'll come to bury Sandra, or one of you younger ones". I have it written down more explicitly in a chapter not online -- confusing, I spent a bit of time searching before I realised.

At Unicorn Farm there was a minuscule church - chapel would be the right word for it. And every day, whether education was going on or not, there was a short time of adoration ending with a blessing every morning, and sometimes also in the evening.

At home Susan often lacked the willpower to go to church, it was early and Dad really did not like her going. Also the services in the big, old cathedral were stuffy, boring and not a bit uplifting. The choir did all the singing and even prayers or answers from the people. It was more like going to the theatre than to church.

Susan did not know what she really wanted from a church, but these short, early morning worshipping, often accompanied be mellow guitar music, short prayers clad in solemn words with set answers from those present and subtle meanings, spoke much more to her heart.

Often gentle Gylfi led the worship, but now and then a priest from a nearby town came, and when he did, Susan felt the blessing almost physically, like some kind of ancient magic.

There was a feeling of conspiracy and conviviality to these early morning gatherings, and many of the apprentices gathered there to start off the day.

September 3 question - What are your thoughts on using AI, such as GPChat, Raptor, and others with your writing? Would you use it for research, story bible, or creating outlines\beats?

My answer - No I would not. I do not use AI - I only use it for removing the background from photos, that's all!

All my websearches are followed by the switch -ai to not get any AI generated replies.

I tried using AI for synopses, structuring of a text, and I even asked it to write one of my Words for Wednesday stories for me.
I was not satisfied with the AI's story al all. I found it generic, two-dimensional, and sterile. I got no kick whatsoever from reading it ... The AI did even not perform as requested, as it did not use all the Words.

That's one of the problems with AI. Another is that it's a 'people-pleaser' for lack of better words. It does not like to disappoint us. If it does not have an answer, it invents one - in short it tells us a lie, politely of course, but it's still a lie.

August 6 question - What is the most unethical practice in the publishing industry?

My answer - Paying translators peanuts!

I wrote this on Kate Larkindale's blog, and thought it needed to be added here:
Not only does is go against he "pay a worker his wages" it also deprives the readers of the pleasure they could have had from a better book if the translator had had the time to do a good/better job.

I have a great idea for the continuaion of last Wednesday's story, letting one more apprentice survive the loss og magic. But as I told Monday the Ookie-pookies have gotten hold of me, and I think that whatever I write is bad. No story today, only the Words.

Wordling today, I remembered to use pen & paper. Mostly this is a shortcut to better results for me. Today’s average difficulty is 5.2 guesses out of 6, or very challenging.

The Words for Wednesday (no story) & IWSG November 6

The Word for Wednesday challenge started a long time ago. Now it has turned into a movable feast with Elephant's Child as our coordinator; and the Words are provided by a number of people.

The Words for today are:

Parachute
Reindeer
Shark
Clay
Ruins
     and/Or
 Telescope
Totem Pole
Black
Severed
Surf

And I still have the following unused Words from last Wednesday

Cave
Mary
Near
Rapid
White

I have had neither time nor energy for writing more story, and I even have lots of dangling ends and loose tails and tales to choose from. I pray and hope that after this coming weekend the chaos surrounding us will slow down and slowly fall into something resembling order and plans. I hope!

- - A - - B - - C - -

Today is also the first Wednesday of the month. Time for the monthly Question from the Insecure Writers' Support Group

November 6 question - What creative activity do you engage in when you're not writing?

My answer: "What creative activity do I not engage in while not writing" would be an easier question for me to answer.

I have never done, and do not plan to ever do bobbin lace or tatting.

Apart from these two ... I think I have tried my hand at most any creative endeavour under the sun. I find creating fun, I get ideas all the time. I just lack time and energy to do what I would like. This might - as said in the WfW part -  be improving in the weeks to come.

Words for Wednesday ~The Words and Wordle

Posted one minute to midnight because it contains Wordle spoilers.

The Word for Wednesday challenge started a long time ago. Now it has turned into a movable feast with Elephant's Child as our coordinator; and the Words are provided by a number of people.
The prompts for September are provided by Sean Jeating and can be found @ Elephant's Child.

The Words for today are:

Church,
Hazel,
Hollow,
Red,
Whirlpool
      and/or
Cave,
Mary,
Near,
Rapid,
White

I have been away for much of today, and I really like the Words - I want to use them for a chapter in Susan's story so no story today, I hope to have better time for writing later. But I am going to use a few of the Words for some fun. I'll probably re-use them for the Susan-story.

Today I solved the Wordle. I felt not proud and very proud at the same time.

Not proud because I used five guesses, and in later guesses I used letters, I knew were not in the word, and I put some letters where I knew they were not supposed to go.
It looked like this:

But I was very proud that I knew the word that is today's solution. I learned it years and years ago, and it is in no way similar to its Danish counterpart and it is not a word I use every day either.

Looking at today's Word it hit me that those of them containing five letters (Hazel - Rapid - White)  could be a credible way of solving today's  Wordle. I added Words as well, but could have done without.

Again, if you intend to solve today's Wordle, and you still can do so in your timezone, scroll down no further.
This might be a mock-up, but the solution is the right one.

Words for Wednesday ~ the Words and a Game

This week's prompts are:
Desert,
Dream,
Machos,
Planet,
Treatment,
      and/or
Bags,
Behind,
Four,
Infinity,
Walk
- - A - - B - - C - -

These last few days I've been noticing far more machos than is my wont. I have been looking at cars. Explanation will follow.

Long time ago, back in 2006, Myyratohtori @ Suomalainen Päivakirja (These Finnish word means Mousedoctor @ Finnish Diary) began a game. The Finnish licence plates all have 2 letters and then 1-3 numbers. The game is to look at the plates, and first find one with the number 1, then 2, then 3 and so on to 999.  She is now at 513, so this is a game for the patient.
The Danish License plates are a bit different: two letters - two numbers - three numbers. So If  I wanted to play, I'd have to look for a 001 to begin. Like this one:

AB 24 001

For a long time I did not want to play, but then 3 months ago I began looking ... and did I ever see a 001? No! I saw lots of  002's and 003's even a 000 - that one really has to be the starting point.

Then the last Sunday in September I told The Writer and the Owlets about this game as we walked to church, and agonized a bit. On the way back to the train station, while we were waiting for the green lights a 001 went past us. Yay.

I had seen a 002 parked at our local supermarket almost every day till then, so when I went shopping the following Monday I looked closely at all the cars in the parking lot, but of course it was there no longer. Only heaps of 003's. And Tuesday I saw no less than four 001's. Then as I sat dreaming in the bus, bags of shopping at my feet, we passed a parked 002. To be sure, I looked at the behind of the car as well, and yes, there it was.

Now I'm on the lookout for a 003, which has eluded me for almost 2 weeks. It sure is a game of patience. I can furthermore tell that the chance of seeing two cars following one another with the same last three numbers is way greater than I thought, as this has happened at least four times already.

I used the words: Machos, Dream, Bag, Walk, Behind, and four.

Today is also the first Wednesday of the month. Time for the monthly Question from the Insecure Writers' Support Group

June 5 question - In this constantly evolving industry, what kind of offering/service do you think the IWSG should consider offering to members?

My answer - I think the porpose of this group perfectly describes what I would like:
Purpose: To share and encourage.
Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!
Posting: The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. Visit others in the group and connect with your fellow writer - aim for a dozen new people each time - and return comments. This group is all about connecting!

Poetry Monday :: Watermelon ~ Nothing so Far, and Why

Every time I hear the word Watermelon, today's clue, I think of a children's play I saw with my school as a small one.

I imagined finding the lyrics for one of the songs, called The Last Watermelon in Town, would be fairly easy. And then I would translate / re-poemize it for today's post.

-- 🍉 --

I just forgot the harsh Danish copyright laws concerning lyrics and scores.
An English or German tune from 1969 would be no problem to find. Not so a Danish one.
It is impossible to find more than 3 lines from the song online, and the book is only accessible from a few public libraries in Denmark. Of course none of them remotely close to where I live. I could have it sent to the library close to me, and get it there, but this is not done in under 8 days - not remotely Monday any more.

-- 🍉 --

Maybe later today more will follow. I'm squeezing my brain.

The lines I found so far in Danish:

Her kommer jeg med byens sidste vandmelon, og hvis dragen blir liggende får vi ikke mere mad eller mælk eller smør eller æg eller æbler eller flæsk. Så er det slut med ... og vandmelonerne!

For today we were given:

Suppress
Ballet
Hero
Warrant
Partner
Pressure

Treasure map
Bus stop
Egg roll
Full moon
Garden gnome
Trash can

Those words seem like some I ought to write a good chapter of Susan's tale by using. I just can't. Writer's block or something? Every time I sit down to write, I am reminded of other things I have to do ... even weeding, which is quite abnormal for me ;)
I hope this will pass -- quickly -- I love writing!

Words for Wednesday & IWSG - August Question

Dear everybody!
I'm so sorry for posting a half-written post yesterday. I had forgotten we were celebrating a July-children's birthday and coming home and done with writing party yesterday. I must have pressed Publish instead of Schedule.
Now at least here are the Words. This month it's Elephant's Child supplying us with the words on her blog.

Meet
Glimpses
Apples
Taste
Memory
Garden

And/or
Letters
Year
Marvellous
Ways
Mother
Shadow

- - - - -

August 3 question - When you set out to write a story, do you try to be more original or do you try to give readers what they want?

My answer: Neither. I tell the story, I want to tell. I sit myself down and write the story down - often after composing it in my head while walking, biking or taking a bath.
Then I wait for some time, and read it through to see if I still like to read the story. If yes, I go on correcting, expanding and so on this story. And when I like to read it, all of it, I consider it finished.
I might never publish anything at all this way, but then I hope you, my readers here in the interwebs, and whom else in real life reading my story has had just half as much fun reading my story as I have had telling and writing it.
This suddenly does not sound like it belongs in a The Insecure Writer's Support Group post, but I promise you that I am still insecure while writing. Trying to find that one word catching the atmosphere in just the right way, trying to give that timbre, recreate this peculiarity and soon.

Words for Wednesday -- The Words

The words appeeared  on  Elephant's  Child's blog, yesterday. They are given by Hilary Melton-Butcher - as every Wednesday in July.

While I'm thinking, I want to repeat the "rules" and the words for all o hsee here as well.

This meme was started by Delores a long time ago.  Troubles led her to bow out, but the meme was too much fun to let go, and now Words for Wednesday is provided by a number of people and has become a movable feast with Elephant's Child as our coordinator.

Essentially the aim of this meme is to encourage us to write.  Each week we are given some prompts. These prompts can be words, phrases, music or images.
What we do with those prompts is up to us:  a short story, prose, a song, a poem, or treating them with ignore...
We can use some or all of the prompts, and mixing and matching is encouraged.

Some of us put our creation in comments on the post, and others post on their own blog. This fun meme includes cheering on the other participants.
And the more the merrier goes here as well, so if you are posting on your own blog then please tell us in the comments, so that all other participants, can come along and applaud.

Words for Wednesday - The Words

This month Messymimi is providing the prompts on her Meanderings.
She tells us:

It's my month to provide the prompts for Words for Wednesday.  Since it becomes Wednesday in some parts of the world while it is still Tuesday here, i am providing the prompts today, so you can work on them and post them when it's Wednesday where you are.

This week the prompts are the following words

prize
conversation
smell
citizen
vegetable
fail

and/or the following phrases

mountain out of a molehill (to make a big deal out of nothing)
a cut below (something inferior to the surrounding others)
a cold fish (someone who lacks empathy or emotion)

Please use these as a springboard, not a chain, and if you write a story, leave a link in the comments today or tomorrow so we can all come visit.

I am not up to writing. Easter holidays have begun, and as always we're busy with family and church arrangements. Plus my neck. It's not hurting so much any more, but still making me dizzy.

My A-Z Challenge writing is also suffering ... How do you tackle this: continue where you let go - in my case with J - or the letter of the day?
