Kajkage & Wordle og Store bededagssuk
Frog Cake & Wordle

For River and other Australian readers. Snapped in a bakery near me yesterday.
Kajkager. Kaj cakes.  Named after Kaj from the puppet duo Kaj & Andrea. But the actual cake is older, probably first made in the 1950es by the baker Kristian Hansen from Ry.

River told us about Australian Frog cakes here.

Vi skulle have haft varme hveder i aften og fri i morgen. SUK. Det er 4. fredag i påsketiden og altså skulle det have været Store bededag i morgen, den 16. maj.


Today's Wordle a big Fail. It was a totally normal word! And I could not guess it! I made stupid guesses, with bad letters or right letters in bad places.Yuck!
Looking at the Help page for Wordle, I feel a bit consoled: Today’s average difficulty is 7 guesses out of 6, or very challenging.

Hobbit Day ~ Hobbitdag

Today we drank lots of tea and ate lots of cakes. Entirely fitting, as on his date 87 years ago, The Hobbit was first published. Tomorrow will be Hobbit Day, the shared birthday of Frodo and Bilbo Baggins. Another reason for tea and cakes. And as tomorrow is Sunday, it is also the start of the Hobbit week - to be celebrated!

Today, among other, we had the famous Plum Torte from New York Times - is IS as good as they say!

     I dag drak vi masser af the og spise mange kager. Det er helt passende, fordi i dag er det 87 år siden at Hobbitten udkom for første gang. I morgen se det Hobbitdag - Frodo og Bilbo Sækkers fælles fødselsdag - den skal da fejres med endnu flere kager! Og eftersom i morgen er søndag, er det også den første dag i Hobbitugen. Den må vi fejre!
     I dag fik vi blandt andet den berømte Blommetærte fra New York Times - den er faktisk super!

Poetry Monday :: Oatmeal

It's Poetry Monday.  Diane - who has taken over the hosting of  this challenge - has given us a topic; and the topic is Oatmeal. I do not eat oatmeal raw, I like it with milk, sugar and raisins, but I can't eat lactose, and lactose free milk just tastes odd. But oatmeal is a kitchen staple in the Owlery because:

Oatmeal is the very best,
when mixed with eggs and lemon zest
some sugar, flour and spices too,
Then one banana, maybe two.
Into the oven in a mould
for half an hour ... oh we lust.
we cannot wait till it turns cold
but eat it to the very crust.

Yes we love banana cake with lots of oatmeal in it.

The theme is The Most Memorable Italian Meal.


The Most Meorable Italian meal. This theme is almost torture today. It's raining, 14 degrees cold and windy. I sit here trying to write and to keep warm.
  Italian meal ... I love Italian food. I often make it for us to enjoy ... don't get me started: Penne alla Norma, Spaghetti all'arabbiata, Pasta carbonara, Bruscetta ..., for a meal on a cold day, Ravioli or Girasole with tasty stuffings, Carpaccio or Panino for in between. And cakes. Lots of cakes:
a Tiramisù when there's a party (we had one this Saturday), Panforte, Panettone, Torta dei cinque minuti, and many more cakes (Many of them from "I dolci in casa" - a book on cakes and desserts). Oh and Richiarelli, cancucchi and Fave dei morti with a good Vin Santo. Mmm, almost heaven.
Did you notice that I left out Pizza? It's not because we never make a pizza, we do, at least once a week, normally with anchovies and pineapple and ham and cheese ... we love it! This is what my lilting poem will describe, the conglomerate, the icon, the apotheoses of so many meals eaten from a humble Italian Pizza a Taglio, where freshly baked pizzas in large pans are cut up and sold after weight. You ask for un'etto - 100 grams - or more according to your appetite. It's always fresh, always hot and the Florentine ones are the very best.


The very best Italian meal
Oh still I dream of this some time.
Come follow me to Florence's streets
The narrow ones that twist and twine
In Vicolo Sant'Antonino
there is - or was - a pizza shop
Where mushrooms, tomatoes and cheese
Would make me enter and say "Please!
One hundred gram." - OK some more,
A Sprite to chase it I'll adore.
Then sitting on the fountain's rim
In Italian sunshine once again.
Il Duomo's cupola ahead
and just behind me San'Lorenzo.
Then biting into savoury
And crusty goodness - luxury,
The mushrooms perfect, hot and sweet,
For eating in an Italian street.
I dream of this again today.

The theme for today is: Lemon Meringue Pie Day. I never heard of this special pie until today, and did not really know what to do or say. So instead of big versed in praise of said pie, two humble haiku must suffice.

Meringue is crunchy and sweet
lemons are tasty

Mix them together
how will it taste? I wonder
I like pies - Let's try!

Tirsdagstips :: Smør - Butter

   At smøre forme er nok den kedeligst del af det at bage en kage - og den der giver de mest fedtede fingre.
   Forleden skulle jeg bage en kage, hvor smørret skulle smeltes i en gryde. Som altid stillede jeg derefter gryden omvendt i formen, så det smør, der hænger ved gryden kunne dryppe ned i formen.
  Det dryppede bare ikke særligt meget, det var nok for koldt, men så fik jeg en lys idé. Inden jeg skrabede dejen ned i formen med dejskraberen, brugte jeg den til at srake smørret fra gryden ned i formen og fordele det. Vupti, smurt form. Ikke mere fedtede fingre, og der var faktisk smør nok til formen!

   Greasing moulds is probably the most tedious part of baking a cake - and the one that gets your fingers the most sticky.
   The other day I made a cake where the butter had to be melted in a pan. As always, I then placed the pan upside down in the mould so that the left over butter from the pan could drip into the mould.
  It just didn't drip very much, it was probably too cold, but then I had a bright idea. Before scraping the batter into the pan with the dough scraper, I used it to scrape the butter from the pan into the mould and distribute it. Voila! buttered mould. No more greasy fingers, and there was actually enough butter for the mould!

Fruitcake for me is Stollen. Ever since long  ago we loved German cakes, and the year in Salzgitter did nothing to diminish that love.


Give me pudding, give me Yule log
Gingerbread or cookies small,
They're tasty but I dare say
Christmas Stollen beats them all

Give me mint pies, Pfeffernüsse,
Fattigmenn and all the rest
I do like them, but believe me:
Stollen is the very best

In December I go shopping
People look at me and frown
For my cart is filled with Stollen
We do like them, white and brown!

A typical Stollen with almond paste filling - our favourite.  But .. to be honest, we like Printen even better!

Vinterferie -- 4 -- Winter Holidays

     I dag for præcis 6 år siden var det også fredag i vinterferien. Og lige som på den fredag for snart længe siden, spillede vi også Dungeons & Dragons, men i modsætning til den fredag, spiste vi ikke scones. Vi fik en galopkringle, som Skribenten havde bagt. Den smagte godt, Billedet her er ikke det bedste. Brun kage på brunt bræt, men kagen var spist inden Uglemor fik kigget på billederne, og en halvkedelig kage er meget bedre end ingen kage.

Today exactly 6 years ago it was, as today, Friday in the winter holidays. And just like on that long ago Friday we played Dungeons & Dragons, but we did not eat scones with strawberry jam. We had "Galopkringle" (Gallop cake - because it's awful quick to make). The Writer made it, and we ate it before MotherOwl got to look at her photos. They're quite drab, brown cake on a brown board. But well drab cake is better than no cake at all.

Vinterferie -- 3 -- Winter Holidays

     Her er faktisk ikke særligt vinterligt for øjeblikket, ca. 5 grader, overskyet og småfugtigt. Lige den slags vejr, Uglemor ikke kan fordrage. Så er det jo godt at der er en undskyldning for at bage en kage. Valentinsdag.

Although this is our winter holidays, the weather is rather Novemberish. cool, cloudy, windy and moist. Exactly the kind of weather, or lack of weather, that is MotherOwl's lest favourite weather. What a good thing it is Valentine's day today. A good excuse to bake a cake.

Leg - Playing

     Uglemor arbejder stadig på sin plantefarverblog, men der sker også andet i Ugleboet. Solen skinner af og til, Ugleungerne gror langsomt Uglemor over hovedet, planterne vokser og vi laver sære, sjove og ind i mellem kedelige ting (dem gider jeg ikke skrive om).

 MotherOwl is still writing on her plant dyeing blog. But that's not all that's happening in the Owlery.  The sun shines now and then, the Owlets are growing bigger, they're almost all taller than MoterhOwl now, the plants are growing, GardenOwl is grumpy, we're doing lots of stuff, fun and boring together (the boring parts are mostly left out of this blog).

     En hvis Uglemor har haft fødselsdag. Og ja der står ugle (fukurou)  på lagkagen. Vi drak kaffe i havem og om aftenen kom der søreme en fødselsdagsbyge, så vi sap for at svinge vandkanden.

A certain MotherOwl celebrated her 57th birthday. The kanji on the cake says fukurou = owl in Japanese.  We had coffee in the garden and in the evening a shower passed by and freed us from watering by means of the watering cans.


Piraten fylder stadig lommerne med kastanjer som Uglemor putter i farvegryden. I år blev det gult!

Og så har Uglemor fået er origami-flip. Denne gang søde, nemme rammer. Uglemor synes at rigtig origami kun er foldet - ikke klippet, så de her rammer er bare fine.

And then MotherOwl is once again folding paper. Origami does not involve scissors - at least not after the paper has been cut to the rigth size, these frames are perfect.

Ingefærhøst -- A Harvest of Ginger (2. november)

     Hele sommeren har der stået en hvid, firkantet opvaskebalje i Uglemors dome. Der har groet underlige vækster op ad den. Uglemor synes, at de underlige spirer har været præsenteret før her på bloggen, men findes igen, det vil de ikke.
     Måske er det et af de blogindlæg, der kun er blevet skrevet inde i Uglemors underlige hoved. Så her er et nærportræt af en af dem som helt lille tilbage i februar.

All summer long a square, white washing bowl has had its place in MotherOwl's dome.
MotherOwl has a distinct memory of writing about those ET-sprouts, but they've gone away. Maybe it was one of those blog posts only composed in my quirky brain. Long story short. Here's a portrait of the plant way back in February. 
    

     I dag var de allesammen visnet, de kan ikke lide den kølige, danske vinter. For selv om de mindede en del om bambus, så er det altså ingefær.
     Uglemor måtte i gang med at høste.

Today all the green was wilted away. Even if they look a lot like bamboo they are ginger, and do not grow well in cold, dreary, Danish winters.
MotherOwl set to harvesting them.

     Først skal rødderne vaskes. Dette her stykke er ca. så stort som det, jeg plantede tilbage i februar.

    Her ligger rødderne så til tørre. Vi har spist af dem undervejs ved at grave en enkelt lille rod op ved behov, så høsten er endnu større end det ser ud til.
     Nu overvejer Uglemor  så, om de lange tynde rødder til venstre i billedet også kan spises.
     I morgen skal Spirillen bage ingefærkager, og Uglemor har fundet en opskrift ovre hos Lucy fra Attic24. Den lyder lækker.

All the roots spread out to dry. The harvest is bigger than it seems, we have been stealing fresh roots all summer when we wanted ginger for cooking.
Now MotherOwl just wonders if the long, thing roots to the left in the picture can be eaten as well.
Tomorrow Marsupilami will make some ginger cookies, and MotherOwl found a new delicious looking recipe in Lucy's place at Attic24.

Vi er midt i vores fødseldagssæson. I dag er det Hvalrossen, der bliver fejret.
We're in the middle of our birthday season. Today the Walrus is being celebrated.



     I dag har Uglemor været på marked og ude og plukke blomster til plantefarvning, men det er der ikke nogle billeder af. Spirillen kom hjem fra lejr, og blev glad for sin Spiril-laampe, som lige blev færdig i tide.

Today MotherOwl was to a Farmers' Market and for a walk picking plants for dye. No photos were taken. Marsupilami returnde home, and was happy to see the Marsupilami lamp. I got it finished just in time.

Uglemor er i forårshumør. Hun har fundet nogle uglepaner eller hedder det mon tulipugler? Jeg har lyst til at bage en hel masse, og jeg er sikker på, de smager godt. Måske var det et job for Spirillen

MotherOwl says that spring has arrived. She's found some tulipowls ... owlipans erm, call them what you like. I want to make some, and I'm sure they're tasty. Maybe a job for Marsupilami?

  • På vej hjem fra julemessen. Det havde sneet i København, men ikke ude ved os. 
  • On our way home from Christmass mass. Snow had fallen in Copenhagen, bu not at our place.  

  • Julekrybben i kirken. Billedet er utydeligt på grund af røgelse i luften. Spirillen og Piraten var ministranter.

    • Vi får snevafler, når jorden er helt dækket af sne. Det kan godt ske flere gange på en vinter. De smager vældig godt.
    • When the ground is totally covered in snow, we make waffles. They are delicious, and sometimes we eat this treat several times in one winter

    • Og her er sidste skud på stammen - den venlige snetrold. Han må støtte sig til bordet, for nu tør det for alvor.

      • I går begyndte hønsene at lægge æg igen - underlige dyr. 
      • Yesterday the hens started laying again; strange birds they are.

    Blå tråd -- Blue threads

    Der er kun sket lidt med mine fine blå uldgarnsnøgler. Der bliver vævet, men det går langsomt fremad. Jeg meller mig alligevel under fanerne i Ginnys net-strikkeklub, og håber det hjælper på hastigheden.

    Blue weaving is happening, but slowly progressing only. Linking up to Ginny's Yarn Along anyway, hoping to improve progress that way. . 




    Monstermuffins! Jeg har mest studeret kogebøger. De sidste to gange har mine muffins gjort det her. Det mindst 117. gang jeg bruger den selv samme opskrift, og de har aldrig set sådan ud før. Hvad sker der mon?

    I have mostly been pooering over my cookin books. There has been some birthday and pre-advent baking going on. Among which these Monstrous muffins stand out. The last two times, I made muffins using my old and tried recipe, they looked like this. But why?

    Dagens gode nyheder -- Today's good news

         I går skinnede solen og det var lunt. Uglemor gik en tur med "sit liv" og fangede de en bi under indflyvning.

    Yesterday the sun was shining and it was not cold. MotherOwl took the camera for a walk and caught a bee coming home.


         Uglemors første vævede stykke er færdigt. Det vil sige det skal lige presses osv. men ellers ...  Det måler ca. 28 x 35 cm. Meningen var, at det skulle være kvadratisk. Prøv igen.

    My first woven piece. It's still in need of wet treatment to hopefully straighten the edges. It measures 28 x 35 cm. It should have been a square, well better luck next time.


         I dag var det Vor Frue af Lourdes' dag. Og Minimax kunne overtales til at bage en squashkage. Uglemor fandt det kreative hjørne frem og lavede kagen om til en lettere mislykket grotte med kildevæld og det hele. Den smagte godt.

    Today is the day of Our Lady of Lourdes. Minimax made a cake with courgettes and MotherOwl transformed it to a wobbly grotto with a wellspring. It tasted good.



         Ugleungerne og Skribenten var i biografen og så den nye legofilm. Den var god og morsom, skulle jeg hilse og sige.

    The Owlets and the Writer saw Lego - the Movie today. They all said it was a good and funny movie.

    Årets første ... -- The first ... of the Year

    Årets første sæbe er et helt nyt forsøg: saltsæbe. Der er mange, der har skrevet og talt i begejstrede vendinger, og nu måtte det prøves. Uglemor havde noget lyserødt himalayasalt stående. Efter en tur i melmøllen var det pulveriseret, men ikke længere særligt lyserødt. En lille del af det blev malet sammen med ristet nori (sushitang). Så blev der rørt sæbe og Minimax hjalp med at røre, så der ikke kom for mange klumper i. I dag blev sæben så taget ud af formen, og i modsætning til hvad jeg har læst at andre har oplevet, var den helt normal sæbe-klæbrig, og ikke smuldrende eller tør som jeg havde forventet. Til gengæld sås det tydeligt på sæbens farve at nori er grøn og ikke sort.

    The first soap of the year was another experimental soap. A salt-soap. Some pink himalayasalt from the stash was ground in the mill, and some nori (the seaweed used for sushi) joined the last part of the salt. Minimax helped with the mixing of salt and liquid soap, MotherOwl poured into molds, and today the soap was unmolded. Much to MotherOwl's surprise it was not stiff and crumbly - what reading of other soapers' notes had led her to expect - but the normal new soap-sticky. It was very visible that nori is indeed green and not black as it looks.

    Årets første kager stod forfatteren for. Han overraskede os med at bage både kanelsnegle til dessert og cantuccini til Uglemor over de næste dage. Begge dele FODMAP-venligt og velsmagende.

    The first cakes of the year were made by the Writer. He surprised us with warm cinnamon rolls after dinner, and he had also made cantucci for MotherOwl to eat over the next days. Both FODMAP-friendly and so tasty.

    Luciadag -- St. Lucy's day

           I Sverige - og efterhånden også i Danmark - er fejringen af Lucias dag en stor ting. I Ugleboet gør vi ikke så meget ud af det. Det der med at stå tidligt op og bage lusseklatter er ikke så uglevenligt. Men bagt bliver der, lidt afhængigt af hvornår Ugleboets indbyggere er hjemme. I dag var Skribenten til møde til sent, og derfor blev vores luciabrød, med ægte safran og finthakkede mandler, serveres til dessert. (Se opskrift nederst). Der er nogen til i morgen, ristede med smør og honning smager de næsten endnu bedre.
         Det var morsomt at først kom Ugleungerne hjem fra skole og fortalte at deres inspektør i forbindelse med luciaoptoget havde genfortalt den hellige Lucias legende. Og så, medens Uglemor stod og æltede, var de søreme et interview med nogle skolebørn der også kunne fortælle om Lucia og hendes liv. Ret interessant at det nu er stuerent at fortælle helgenlegender i skoletiden.

    In Sweden, and increasingly so in Denmark, St. Lucy's day is celebrated with hot buns and singing children dressed in white walking in processions with candles and singing. The buns should be served piping hot for breakfast, but that's not very owly. We serve the buns when it fits into our day's program, and today it was after a late dinner, as the Writer had a meeting till late. But they were the real thing with saffron and finely chopped almonds, very good. (Recipe se further down). They are also very good next morning, especially toasted and with butter and honey.

    One interesting fact. In connection with the St. Lucy's procession on the Owlets' school the Headmaster told them of St. Lucy's life, and later, while kneading the buns, MotherOwl heard an interview with some schoolchildren, retelling her legend as well. They were actually encouraged to know about a saint's life. That's new in Denmark, and good news at that

      They're not ascreatively wrung as the first batches, but just as tasty. 
    Luciabrød - til 7 personer og lidt til næste dag
    200 g smør
    6 dl mælk
    50 g gær
    ½ tsk safran eller 2 tsk gurkemeje
    1 tsk salt
    150 g sukker
    100 g smuttede, hakkede mandler
    25 g rosiner (kan undlades)
    2 æg
    1250 g mel
    rosiner til pynt 
    Smelt smørret og hæld mælken i, rør gæren ud i den lune væde. Tilsæt safran, mandler, rosiner, æg, salt, sukker og mel. Rør let mellem de forskellige ingredienser. Ælt dejen godt og lad den hæve i 30 minutter. Del dejen i 16 stykker og form dem til Luciabrød, pynt med rosiner i snoningerne og lad dem hæve ca. 30 min. Pensl evt. med æg eller mælk og bag dem ca. 13 min. ved 225 grader. 

    St. Lucy's buns - enough for 7 persons as a dessert or for tea with a few left for next morning
    200 g butter
    600 ml milk
    50 g yeast
    ½ ts p saffron (or 2 tsp turmeric)
    1 t sp salt
    150 g sugar
    100 g  almonds, blanched and finely chopped
    25 g raisins (may be omitted)
    2 egg
    1250 g flour
    Raisins for decoration
    Melt the butter and pour in a bowl with the milk, add sugar, almonds, saffron, egg, salt and yeast (check the temperature first, if too hot the yeast will not work) Add flour, but not all at once, Knead well and leave covered to raise for half an hour. Knead again, split in 16 parts and form into shapes like the letter "S" and like shapes, stick a raisin in the obvious spots. Let raise for 30 minutes, coat with milk or lightly beaten egg if you like, and bake for 13 - 15 minutes at 200 degrees centigrade.

    Æblestang -- Cake with Apples


         En favoritkage i Ugleboet. Den er ret let at lave, så Ugleungerne hjælper med. Det eneste svære er at have tålmodighed i de 1½ time, kagen skal hæve. Den er perfekt til en kølig eftermiddag med et (eller to) krus varm the.

    This is one of the favourites in the Owlery. and very easy to make, although it requires some patience as it has got to raise for 1½ hours.
    It is perfect for a chilly autumn day accompagnied by a mug (or two) of black tea.

    Roll out the dough and make incisions --  one third in in each side.





    Mix the apples, raisins and spices.













    Place it evenly dowm the middle.




    • Flet alle strimlerne
    • Braid the strips one on one.












    • Bag den lysebrun.
    • Bake until golden.
















    • Kom masser af glasur på og spis.
    • Cover with lots of icing and enjoy.

    Rosenkransfest og æbler ··· Feast of the Rosary and apples

         Nu da vores have bugner af æbler er det tid til æbleflæsk, æblekager, æblegrød ... alt med æbler. I Ugleboets have er der tre æbletræer - ja der er egentlig fire, men det fjerde bærer æbler, der er så sure og uspiselige at det kun bliver brugt til klatretræ. Det var her da vi flyttede ind, og Ugleungerne elsker det. Det er ved at skulle fældes, gammelt og fuldt af svamp og døde grene. Skribenten bruger et par dage hvert år på at gøre det sikkert at klatre i.

         Da vi flyttede ind, plantede vi et familietræ med tre sorter. Summerred en tidlig spisesort, Cox Orange og Belle de Boskoop. Det var ikke noget godt træ, og det er kun den ene sort, der stadig bærer. Det er Belle de Boskoop, og de er knap modne endnu. For nogle år siden podede Uglemor selv et træ. Det er tidlige spiseæbler af ukendt sort, og de er allerede modne, og spist - alle 20! Sidste efterår plantede vi så et Filippa-ægbletræ i stedet for et hensygnende pæretræ, og der er ca 4 æbler på i år. Derfor har vi her i Ugleboet lidt af æblemangel. I går fik Skribenten så øje på at vores nabo har et rigtbærende træ, hvor hele plænen under var fuld af de herligste nedfaldne æbler. Skribenten spurgte pænt, og vores søde nabo, der kun er sig selv, gav os lov til at tage alle de æbler vi kunne spise.

         I morgen er det Rosenkransens fest, den fejres ikke, fordi den falder på en søndag. Vi vil gerne fejre den alligevel, og da vi ikke har tid til at bage søndag, bliver det så i dag. Vi bager æble/kanelmuffins. 53 små og 7 store (ja, det er altså en for mange, men ve er 7, så en muffin må bare vente til det er tid til at spise dem). Så stiller vi dem på bordet, så de danner en rosenkrans i kæmpestørrelse. Hvad vi gør med korset, må Uglemor vist tænke over medens kagerne bager, og Ugleungerne skal nok hjælpe til.


    In the Owlery we eat a lot op apples. When we moved in, a big apple tree was already in the garden. All the Owls were disappointed when we found out that the apples were inedible. The tree is good for climbing, so although its branches are slowly being et up by fungus, it is still alive. The Owlets love it ant the Writer spend several days a year pruning and cutting for their safety.

    The first autumn we planted a new apple tree with 3 different apples. Now only one of those survive -  the tree was attacked by a disease - and they're not quite ripe yet. MotherOwl grafted her own tree some years ago, form a local, unnamed apple, but it is an early apple, and we ate all 20 apples in early September. Our latest addition has all of five apples this year. So apples are in short supply in the Owlery right now. Luckily we have neighbours. And one of them has a gigantic apple tree. The writer went and asked, and yes., The Owls han pick up all the apples they want.

    This afternoon, we're going to celebrate The feast of the Rosary with apple muffins. We are going to bake 53 small and 7 big muffins (yes one too many, but we're 7 persons, so one big muffin is left out until it is time to eat them) and place them on the table to form a giant Rosary. What we're going to do for the crucifix, MotherOwl has to find out while the muffins are in the oven, and I'm sure the Owlets are going to help.
