A - Z
Every day at noon (except Sundays) a new A-Z post goes live - or no post today.
The theme for this year is Resilience as given by the team, with my subtitle Flowers, Trees and Ancestors.
O ~ Overleveren Karen / Karen, the Survivor
Men søreme!
Folketællingen 1834 Remkolde - The 1834 census for Remkolde Genfundet - Refound |
I found - or rather refound Karen and Lars in Remkolde, as married and parents of two sons. A further stydy of the confirmations in Remkolde yielded a third, older son, but only for the youngest (Hans Christian - the one who is my ancestor) was I able to find a birth or baptism. And the wedding of Karen and Lars eluded me too. They did not marry in Fodby where she was born, nor in Remkolde, where they lived for the rest of their lives. I tried Nestved too, where Lars was born, but did not go to the rigth place. At least I found nothing.
I was lost. So I did what you should do when lost. I asked for help. At Danish Family Search there is a forum. I asked, not really thinking anything would come off my request. But ... less than four hours later nice and competent persons told me where to find the eldest sons' birth and their wedding! So wonderful.
Karen and Lars were married in Nestved in 1805, and then moved to the outskirts of the town, and another parish, where their oldest son Jens was born a year later. They then moved on to Avnø (parish of Køng), where the middle son Niels was born in 1813 ... that's the parish where the church registers burned with the vicarage, no record for 19813 to be found.
Finally they moved to Remkolde, where Hans Christian was born in 1818 and they lived there to the end of their days, Lars died in February 1859, aged 82, and Karen died in october 1860, aged 85. A long lasting survivor.
1. Fodby - Karen
2. Næstved - Lars & Bryllup / wedding
3 Aaderup (Næstved) - Jens
4 Avnø (Køng) - Niels
5 Remkolde (Sværdborg)
Hans Christian & Smedjen / The smithy
How wonderful people are willing to help one another!
SvarSletThat is one of the real great things about that site.
SletLong lasting survivors indeed. 82 and 85 are good ages for those times. Hooray for helpful forums.
SvarSletActually people got quite old back then as well - if you did not live in a city, survived the first five years, and did not die in accidents or childbirths, 80 years was not that rare. I just looked very cursory. It seems like from the census begins in 1787 until 1800 the percentages of 80+ is 0.5%, 70-79 around 2% and 60-69 around 6% I only checked one rural parish, but I have the general impression that the numbers would be the same in any rural parish.
SletPeople of 90 or more on the other hand were very rare.
