Back to Birch Manor -- Á Íslandi 36 - The Long Saturday 1

Way back, in March actually I ground to a halt in my story of Birch Manor and the singing of wands. Too many loose ends made it a word-morass. Now I once again read through all the Á Íslandi Chapters, and found out where to go. I am backtracking to Saturday morning once again. Read the old one here and branch off on a new, hopefully better version.  I won't post it all in one go as it would be without end in sight. but I promise small chapters in the days to come, which for us are holidays, eminently suited for writing.

Hand in hand they walked to the Hall, where they gave a hand laying the tables and brewing tea.
Hilde came toward them, closely followed by Eyvind, This morning he looked like the archetypical Norwegian outdoorsman, bearded, ruddy and lined, yet friendly and well muscled. They sat down and Eyvind asked: "When are Aamu and her nice husband supposed to arrive?"
Knud came over carrying a steaming teapot, and Eyvind repeated his question.
"I'm supposed to be in Schiltach at ten to get her here, but I'm also supposed to be here, doing my share of wandsinging. This is getting more and more complicated." She rose and returned a bit later with Rósa and My.
"Good morning," she said. "The lady here," she indicated tall, red-haired My, who gently inclined her head, "is My Birkeland form Oslo. The other lady," Rósa bowed her blonde head and smiled, "is Rósa Sigurdsdottir from Iceland.  And this is Eyvind Haugen, Hilde's non-magical husband."
"We've heard much of you," Rósa said. "It's a pleasure to finally meet you in person."
"The pleasure is all mine," Eyvind said.

"Now," Susan said, "Eyvind asked when Aamu is supposed to arrive later today. The problem is. I promised to go get them -- one of her sons and maybe her nice husband are coming along -- but I also promised to be here and do my share of the wandsinging. And no matter how good a witch I am, bilocation is not among my skills."
"We'll just have to make do with the two of us, until you are free to join us again," Rósa agreed.
"Haven't any of you heard from Anna?" My asked. "I was sure she would be down from her Swedish domicile to help out?"
"Anna!" Rósa exclaimed, "Just a sec!" She left the table and hurried out of the hall.

While Rósa was away the Hall filled, and voices rose and fell. The last stragglers heaped plates and filled mugs and found somewhere to sit. Babies were comforted and fed, and older toddlers were bribed with bits of delicious food. It looked like nothing but a big, boisterous family outing.

My, Knud, Hilde, Eyvind, Finnbogi, Jan, Marit and Susan sat quietly at the table, drinking yet another scalding cup of tea or enjoying the crumpets. Lis, Tage and Heidi came out of the kitchen, where they had been handing out food and sat at a nearby table.

Rósa came running down the stairs clutching a piece of paper. When she saw Knud about to rise, she augmented her speed and waved the paper with a big smile: "I found Anna's letter. I was sure I had it somewhere. She is coming today, soon. She'll use the portal ..."
"Easy does it," Susan said smiling. "But this is good news indeed. Would you care to be our reception committee? Then we'll take care of the chaos here until you return."
"Great," Rósa said, still out of breath, and sat down. "I will leave as soon as Knud has said the words."

Rasmus came over to the table, "I'm sorry to intrude, but I'm afraid we have to go to Tromsø right away, Mum. The hospital just called, Liisa is worse."
Hilde looked up at him and nodded slowly. "Just a second," she said. "We'll be gone in a jiffy. But first let's think. Eyvind of course will stay here and learn, Susan and Knud are good magicians."
"So you keep on saying my dear." Eyvind said. "I'll stay close to them, and I'll talk to Aamu's nice husband when and if he arrives. You take care, both of you."
"We will," Rasmus assured him. "We're taking Finnbogi and Fiona with us. You won't need them for the wandsinging, but ewe need them to make a thorough search of my house and Hilde's house too. And I can hopefully go to Liisa's work and search."

Susan turned to Hilde: "You do not have to return together all four of you, do you? In other words, I'm worried. Please send word back with just one of you if something happens."
We will," Hilde repeated. "And you'll take care of Eyvind, won't you?"
"Of course we will, I need him to persuade Aamu!" Susan said with just the hint of a smile in her eyes.

"True that," Knud said. "But now that so many of us will be missing today we should maybe postpone the wandsinging? We're missing Kirsten and Sarah of course." He looked at My, Hilde, Eyvind, Jan and Marit who stared blankly back at him. "Sorry," he said "Sarah is excluded by a mutual, but temporary decision - even though her son will be here with wife and children now and then. Kirsten needs help, but as she has no children we decided to wait. The worse news are that now Hilde, Finnbogi and Fiona will be leaving for Tromsø and Susan are leaving too. She's going to Schiltach and will hopefully be back later with Aamu and some of her family ..."
Knud drew a deep breath and emptied his mug.
"Do you see what I mean?" Knud asked. "I think the only sensible thing would be to postpone the wandsinging. There's so much confusion, and we can't just tell Anna and Aamu if she decides to join, that people have been dying or getting bamboozled left and rigth and then expect them to sing wands without further explanation and time to catch up."
"And I won't be much good after all the portals, either," Susan sad. "And I suspect My and Rósa will tire easily," she looked at them with an excusing smile. "You have been singing wands for your children and some of the grandchildren. It's much harder doing so for strangers. I had hoped for all five of us to be fit for fight today. But with Aamu still indecisive, Anna just arriving, and me tired from the portals on top of everything, I honestly don't see how it can be done."
"You are right, Susan," My said with a deep sigh, "even singing wands for my children left me tired. It got easier, but still. We need all us wandsingers - or at least the four of us in tip-top condition, if Aamu decides not to join us - I don't get why, but it's up to her. I vote for a postponement."

Let's take a vote. Susan and I have already said how we feel, we want to postpone, My agrees," Knud looked questioningly at My who nodded, "Lis, How say you?"
"Postpone." Lis answered.
No one was in favour of continuing with the original plan. But no one had a solution to what to do instead either.

Suddenly Fiona said: "A broom-race! Even if I'm not here, you can arrange a course, split people in age groups, and have them race one another. Not teams, only two racing one another, the winner racing another winner and so on until only one is left. We don't need any more accidents."

"And I'm sure someone will be able to help me make the broom-quickening potion," My said. "That was after all one of the reasons I came here."
"Well, then that's decided," Hilde said rising. "We're off." She embraced Eyvind, and left with Rasmus, Fiona and Finnbogi in tow.

Poetry Monday :: Most Memorable Italian Meal

It is Poetry Monday!
Diane - who has taken over the hosting of  this challenge - and Mimi of Messymimi's Meanderings - who supplies us with many of the topics - are also writing wonderful, funny, thought-provoking, ingenious and honestly well written verse. Go and read them!
Karen of Baking in a Tornado has joined us in this crazy pursuit, and promises us at least a poem a month!
SpikesBestMate often publishes a nice verse in the comments.
Jenny at Procrastinating Donkey who has been a faithful participant, is slowly returning to blogging after her husband's passing from this world. Let's continue to send warm thoughts, good energy, and lots of prayers her way, now that her mum's health is in need of a prayer too. But still we dare hope that she will join Poetry Monday again.

The theme is The Most Memorable Italian Meal.

The Most Meorable Italian meal. This theme is almost torture today. It's raining, 14 degrees cold and windy. I sit here trying to write and to keep warm.
Italian meal ... I love Italian food. I often make it for us to enjoy ... don't get me started: Penne alla Norma, Spaghetti all'arabbiata, Pasta carbonara, Bruscetta ..., for a meal on a cold day, Ravioli or Girasole with tasty stuffings, Carpaccio or Panino for in between. And cakes. Lots of cakes:
a Tiramisù when there's a party (we had one this Saturday), Panforte, Panettone, Torta dei cinque minuti, and many more cakes (Many of them from "I dolci in casa" - a book on cakes and desserts). Oh and Richiarelli, cancucchi and Fave dei morti with a good Vin Santo. Mmm, almost heaven.
Did you notice that I left out Pizza? It's not because we never make a pizza, we do, at least once a week, normally with anchovies and pineapple and ham and cheese ... we love it! This is what my lilting poem will describe, the conglomerate, the icon, the apotheoses of so many meals eaten from a humble Italian Pizza a Taglio, where freshly baked pizzas in large pans are cut up and sold after weight. You ask for un'etto - 100 grams - or more according to your appetite. It's always fresh, always hot and the Florentine ones are the very best.

The very best Italian meal
Oh still I dream of this some time.
Come follow me to Florence's streets
The narrow ones that twist and twine
In Vicolo Sant'Antonino
there is - or was - a pizza shop
Where mushrooms, tomatoes and cheese
Would make me enter and say "Please!
One hundred gram." - OK some more,
A Sprite to chase it I'll adore.
Then sitting on the fountain's rim
In Italian sunshine once again.
Il Duomo's cupola ahead
and just behind me San'Lorenzo.
Then biting into savoury
And crusty goodness - luxury,
The mushrooms perfect, hot and sweet,
For eating in an Italian street.
I dream of this again today.

Z to A :: Zip through Autumn ~ 4

The fourth instalment of Zip through Autumn is: Ten-year plan, SMART goals

Ten-year plan?
I haven't got one. Heck I haven't even a one year plan, or a one month plan. I have dreams, ideas, things I like and would like to do. I hope to be still alive, married and relatively fit in ten years.
Because in ten years the Owlets will all be grown up, and have left the nest. The grandparents will probably not be along any more. This will hopefully give us the freedom to travel again as we did when we were young.

SMART goals
The capitalized SMART made me wonder, I looked it up and found:
  • Specific.
  • Measurable.
  • Achievable.
  • Relevant.
  • Time bound.
This smells of time management, career planning and so on to me. I dislike these concepts, because life cannot be scheduled, and my greatest, most memorable moments, achievements and so on happened when I was not following a plan, but followed the impulse of the moment.

But SMART goals ... lemme see:
Specific:
Aren't all goals if you look  closer.
- Stay alive!
- Stay fit (get fitter)
- Learn, or brush up languages, drawing skill and creativity.
- Write my Susan book(s)

Measurable:
Goals usually are, so:
- Wake up every morning; check so far.
- Track my biking times. Do my PE every day; happens not always, but often enough.
- Use Duolingo every day: or read some pages in a book in a foreign language.
- Use Simple Daily Drawing. As per previous Z-A I'm trying to get back up on this specific horse ...
- One or more pages of "Susan" written or corrected.
- Have something to show each evening; Jam, baubles, knit gloves, 10 kilometres, or more intangible: happiness and knowledge.

Achievable.
Yes they are,
- Well no, not staying alive, not forever at least, but for as long as possible.
- I have been fit, I can be again.
- I have learned several languages, can do.
- I'm sure I can write a book, it's not impossible. Having it published is more of a question. If all else fails self publishing would be an option. And send a copy to all blog friends and supporters!
- I have been good at drawing, can re-learn.

Relevant
... for what?
If for me and my family to have as good a time as possible for as long as possible, then yes.
If for a career or earning money or status, then no!

Time bound.
- All life is time bound, but not for me in a measurable way.

Time is not time, an hour is not an hour. Think: Waiting for a dentists' appointment ... that hour is interminable, sitting here writing on the other hand it whizzes past. Picking apples, riding my bike, playing or talking with my children, drawing, or making jam, an hour seems to be of the right length.
Maybe we should concentrate on making more of what makes an hour last an hour?

Also for me learning and practising arts are timeless skills. I'll hopefully continue to improve for years to come.

-- 🔔 --

Almost two years ago Cindi told of making German bells from her Christmas cards. I liked the idea, and had to try. The results were some rather chunky, clumsy specimens. I liked the idea though, and the folding was fun and easy. In my eyes they did not look in the least like bells, more like some fruit or weaver-birds' nest. I made some big ones that hung for a long time in my window. But it was not until I tried making a miniature version, that I really became hooked.

I looked for a how-to in Danish with no luck. So I made one. I did nor translate into English as Cindi has a link to one, and google will bring up a zillion more versions in English. My way of doing it is slightly different. But the photos should be clear after reading through an English instruction.

-- 🔔 --

Den færdige 'dims' ser sådan ud  --  This is how the finished bauble looks
Lad være med at tage jer af mit gamle, slidte skæreunderlag, tak  --  Please don't mind my old, worn cutting mat.

-- 🔔 --

Jeg folder først midterfolden her.

Sådan her:

Luk lidt op og puf endefolderne ind i begge ender. Sådan her:

Fold helt sammen.

--🥜 🍅 🍄 🍉 🍕 🍔 🍓 🍒 🍑 🍐 🍏 🍎 🍫 🥛 🍨 🍰 --

As I wrote on River's Blog ... Here we just have had some small shops heavily fined for writing allergens in normal, lower case type instead of either bold or capitals ... the solution was to write: "For allergens ask the staff" on a sign smoewhere in the shop instead. Totally legal and total idiocy. The staff do not always know, the papers have gone missing, or have not been updated sice the new chef started ...

According to the law - which seems to cover all of EU, and not only Denmark - since 2014 only 14 allergens are singled out for special treatment: Their names have to be written in either CAPITALS or bold letters. Those are:
  1.     Cereal products containing gluten, i.e. wheat, rye, barley, oats or their hybridised strains, and products derived therefrom
  2.     Crustaceans and products derived from crustaceans
  3.     Eggs and products thereof
  4.     Fish and fish products.
  5.     Peanuts and products thereof
  6.     Soya and products derived from soya
  7.     Milk and milk-based products (including lactose).
  8.     Nuts, i.e. almonds (Amygdalus communis L.), hazelnuts (Corylus avellana), walnuts (Juglans regia), cashew nuts (Anacardium occidentale), pecans (Carya illinoiensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch), Brazil nuts (Bertholletia excelsa), pistachios (Pistacia vera), queenland nuts (Macadamia ternifolia) and products derived therefrom. (My note: But totally OK to just write nuts - nor what kind of nuts.)
  9.     Celery and products derived from celery
  10.     Mustard and mustard-based products
  11.     Sesame seeds and products derived from sesame seeds
  12.     Sulphur dioxide and sulphites at concentrations of more than 10 mg/kg or 10 mg/litre.
  13.     Lupin and products derived from lupin
  14.     Molluscs and mollusc products.
I miss carrots, which could be deadly to me, sorbitol and its ilk, garlic, onion, leek and their copains, pulses, legumes, peach, apples, pears, et al.
In short all the birch cross reacting foodstuff and those containing huge amounts of FODMAPs.
And I would gladly accept lists written in plain, normal readable letters with all ingredients, instead of some fancy allergens being given the special treatment or this idiocy leaving us to the mercy of the staff at work that day!.

-- 🥜 -- -- 🥜 -- -- 🥜 --

PS:

-- 🥜 --

I accept, even advocate for peanuts being given the special treatment, and written in bold, capital or maybe fluorescent letters. They are bad!
