Plantejagt -- Gathering trip

Today's activites included bike training with Pirate and Marsupilami. One after another they went biking with MotherOwl.
The ride with Marsupilami was more relaxing, and we took time off to pick flowers and herbs for MotherOwl's crazy ideas - mostly plant dyeing.

A blue bag of sorrel seeds. One box of Cherry plums for Japanese cooking
A bundle of common rushes for weawing
One bow containing an unknown bedstraw species (Lady's bedtraw I suppose) and another with Mugwort leaves.
A crate of staghorn sumac leaves from our garven and the very first tansies.

  1. Have you dyed with tansy before? I tried it for the first time a couple of days ago and was disappointed at the pale yellow it gave.

    1. Yes I have dyed with tansy before. I have never gotten a weak colour. The tansy flowers alone give a more strongly yellow dye, leaves a more greenish yellow. Both of the cool yellow variety. But normally I just put all of it in the dyepot. The colour is one of the best for overdyeing in my opinion.

  2. I used 1:1 ratio. Perhaps this was not enough?

    1. I always go by this rule:
      * Fresh leaves: App. 4 times Weigth of wool
      * Fresh flowers: Double amount flowers to wool
      * Dried leaves: Double amount plants to wool
      * Dried flowers: Equal parts
So yes, equal parts fresh flowers is about half of what I used.

  3. Thank you very much! They've just started blooming in my garden so I have chances to obtain more intense colours.
