For the world day of peace 1 january 2002 John Paul II had these words for us. They are as new and to the point today.
No peace without justice, no justice without forgiveness


... Since then [9/11], people throughout the world have felt a profound personal vulnerability and a new fear for the future. Addressing this state of mind, the Church testifies to her hope, based on the conviction that evil, the mysterium iniquitatis, does not have the final word in human affairs. The history of salvation, narrated in Sacred Scripture, sheds clear light on the entire history of the world and shows us that human events are always accompanied by the merciful Providence of God, who knows how to touch even the most hardened of hearts and bring good fruits even from what seems utterly barren soil.
This is the hope which sustains the Church at the beginning of 2002: that, by the grace of God, a world in which the power of evil seems once again to have taken the upper hand will in fact be transformed into a world in which the noblest aspirations of the human heart will triumph, a world in which true peace will prevail.

I have often paused to reflect on the persistent question: how do we restore the moral and social order subjected to such horrific violence? My reasoned conviction, confirmed in turn by biblical revelation, is that the shattered order cannot be fully restored except by a response that combines justice with forgiveness. The pillars of true peace are justice and that form of love which is forgiveness.
But in the present circumstances, how can we speak of justice and forgiveness as the source and condition of peace? We can and we must, no matter how difficult this may be; a difficulty which often comes from thinking that justice and forgiveness are irreconcilable. But forgiveness is the opposite of resentment and revenge, not of justice. In fact, true peace is “the work of justice” (Is 32:17).

Terrorism springs from hatred, and it generates isolation, mistrust and closure. Violence is added to violence in a tragic sequence that exasperates successive generations, each one inheriting the hatred which divided those that went before. Terrorism is built on contempt for human life.

Respect for a person's conscience, where the image of God himself is reflected (cf. Gen 1:26-27), means that we can only propose the truth to others, who are then responsible for accepting it. To try to impose on others by violent means what we consider to be the truth is an offence against human dignity, and ultimately an offence against God whose image that person bears. For this reason, what is usually referred to as fundamentalism is an attitude radically opposed to belief in God. Terrorism exploits not just people, it exploits God: it ends by making him an idol to be used for one's own purposes.

Following the teaching and example of Jesus, Christians hold that to show mercy is to live out the truth of our lives: we can and must be merciful because mercy has been shown us by a God who is Love (cf. 1 Jn 4:7-12).

Forgiveness is above all a personal choice, a decision of the heart to go against the natural instinct to pay back evil with evil. The measure of such a decision is the love of God who draws us to himself in spite of our sin. It has its perfect exemplar in the forgiveness of Christ, who on the Cross prayed: “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Lk 23:34).

At this time of great distress, the human family needs to be reminded of our unfailing reasons for hope. It is precisely this hope that we intend to proclaim in Assisi, asking Almighty God—in the beautiful phrase attributed to Saint Francis himself—to make each of us a channel of his peace.

No peace without justice, no justice without forgiveness: this is what in this Message I wish to say to believers and non-believers alike, to all men and women of good will who are concerned for the good of the human family and for its future.

No peace without justice, no justice without forgiveness: this is what I wish to say to those responsible for the future of the human community, entreating them to be guided in their weighty and difficult decisions by the light of man's true good, always with a view to the common good.

No peace without justice, no justice without forgiveness: I shall not tire of repeating this warning to those who, for one reason or another, nourish feelings of hatred, a desire for revenge or the will to destroy.

On this World Day of Peace, may a more intense prayer rise from the hearts of all believers for the victims of terrorism, for their families so tragically stricken, for all the peoples who continue to be hurt and convulsed by terrorism and war. May the light of our prayer extend even to those who gravely offend God and man by these pitiless acts, that they may look into their hearts, see the evil of what they do, abandon all violent intentions, and seek forgiveness. In these troubled times, may the whole human family find true and lasting peace, born of the marriage of justice and mercy!

Vejen hjem sidste -- 48 -- On my Way Home, last Chapter

For sidste gang i år - og næsten symbolsk en dag for sent - tog Uglemor sin rangerkappe på og sneg sig ud af huser før daggry. Det var koldt, klart og blæsende. Før Uglemor var færdig med at tage billederne, var hun gennemkold, og den hånd, der havde holdt kameraet mod lygtepælen, var stivfrossen af kontakten med det kolde metal. Men koldt, klart og blæsende er en herlig afveksling fra truende, skummelt og regnfuldt.

For the last time - and of course a day too late - MotherOwl put on her ranger cloak and sneaked out of the house before dawn. It was cold, clear and windy, which is an improvement over murky and rainful.
Windy means freezing cold, and MotherOwl was stiff from cold and her hand, holding the camera steady against the lamppost was numb from contact with the icy metal before pictures were dome to her satisfaction.

   Dagens vers er invitatoriet til matutin, den første af de gamle tidebønner. De blev også lavet om ved liturgireformen i 60'erne, men Uglemor kunne bedre finde ud af den gamle version selv om den var på latin, og bad i mange år tidebøn med ujævne mellemrum. I vore dage findes teksten interaktivt på nettet, selv om den naturligvis undslipper Uglemors heuristik lige nu og hun ikke har lyst til at grave det gamle breviar op - det var måske ellers en god idé.

Today's verse is the invitation from Matutin (Matins?) written down after memory, and folloving the latin breviary. MotherOwl has one of those, and many years ago she sporadically read the hours folloving the old latin rites because the new Danish book of the hours was big, unvieldy and expensive.Cited from memory because the online editions elude me, and I am too lazy to get up and hunt down my paper copy ... well this migth actually be a good idea.

     Ud over markerne har Uglemor brugt kameraets indbyggede nattesyn, så man kan se de store søer der er dannet. Der gik en å i gamle dage, den er nu rørlagt. Måske burde vi søge om naturgenopretningesstøtte til at genskabe den. Det ville være smukt.

Looking over the firelds MotherOwl used the camera's built in nigth vision. It's wet. Very wet. It has been raining for weeks.There's not normally a lake or pond down there, but fields. A brook ran there once upon a time, but it runs in pipes now. Maybe the municipality should apply for nature reshaping and re-make the brook which now runs below ground. That would be good for wild life and maybe attract a stork or two.

Julekrybben -- Nativity



Her i julen vil Uglemor gerne visen denne smukke julekrybbe frem. Den befinder sig i sankt Knud Lavards kirke, hvor Ugleboets indbyggere var til messe i søndags, den hellige families fest.
     Samtidig vil jeg opfordre til eftertanke over, hvor revolutionerende Kristi fødsel egentlig var. I den romerske verden havde et barn ingen værdi i sig selv, udsættelse af nyfødte var, som også i Norden - en alment anerkendt praksis. I det hele taget havde et menneskeliv ikke nogen absolut værdi. Det fik man kun ved at eje eller gøre noget for det. Handicappede, børn, slaver og så videre var ikke rigtige mennesker ... er vi på vej tilbage dertil?

MotherOwl wants to show this nativity scene. It is to be found in St. Knud Lavard's church (Copenhagen, Denmark) where the inhabitants of the Owlery attended mass at the feast of the holy Family.
At the same time, I call to meditation over how revolutionary the birth of Christ was. In the Roman world a child had no value in itself, exposure of newborns was - like in the Scandinavian countries - a widely accepted practice. On the whole a human life had no intrinsic value. It got this only from what it owned or what it did. People with disabilities, children, slaves and so on were not real people ... are we heading back there?



Prayer:
God our Heavenly Father, from the moment of creation you have never ceased showing your love for us. Even when we turned away from you, you did not abandon us to the darkness of sin and death. Indeed, it was when our need was greatest that you sent us a Redeemer - your Son, Jesus - to be born of the Virgin Mary.

Bless us as we look upon this manger. May it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus and raise our minds to contemplate the awesome mystery of God made flesh.

Let this holy season fill us with hope that we might join him in the eternal Kingdom of peace in heaven. Through Christ, our Lord and Saviour, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Bøn på den hellige families fest: Herre Jesus Kristus! Du lod dig føde som menneske i en familie, og ved dit ord ophøjede du ægteskabet til et sakramente, der i kraft af sit ubrydelige bånd er tegn på din kærlighed til Kirken.

Styrk alle ægtepar i deres indbyrdes troskab, skænk dem udholdenhed, når de tynges af egne eller andres fejl, og lad dem på trods af anfægtelser og svaghed bevare den en indbyrdes kærlighed, som er fuldkommenhedens bånd.

Herre og Levendegører, du Helligånd! Uden din guddomsmagt er der intet i mennesket, der holder stand mod det onde, men du gør alting nyt.

Lad alle familier erfare, at din nåde forøger glæderne, gør byrderne til at bære og giver kraft til at give og modtage tilgivelse fra hinanden.

Gør kærligheden frugtbar, både konkret og åndeligt, og bered alles sind på at tage mod livets gave uden forbehold.
