Ny kompostbeholder ~ New Compost Heaps.

Nye kompostbunker  - gammelt billede  ~  april 2012 ~ Old photho of New Compost piles

~ ~ ~

Some years ago I showed the top picture and wrote a blog post with a similar title. I thought maybe five or six years, but it is 13 years ago! April 2012 was when the compost heaps were last renewed. I did a little bit last spring, but nothing much came of it. Today was the day.
In the photo of "MotherOwl's bike bringing home long poles and fencing", a stack of pallets can be seen supporting the bike.

I spent much of April digging out compost from the left pile, feeding the hungry plants and bushes in the Owlery. Today I finally filled up the wheelbarrow for the last time, then work began.

I wheeled the pallets from the pile to the compost heap. Our garden door is luckily 8 cm wider than a pallet. And this winter I re-found my sturdy metal band with holes in it (no idea of its name in English - picture here), which I used for building my Dome. It is easier to bend and bend and bend the band until finally metal fatigue makes it break, so that is what I did for fasteners. Then I screwed them onto the pallets, holding them flush and tight together. Not easy with only two hands ;)

The third side was fastened in the same way; and as a finishing touch to part one, two 2x4s were screwed to the insides as guides for the loose boards making up the front of the box.

Finally I put all the un-composted materials into the new box, building up the front from old boards all the while. They fit snugly behind the 2x4s, and a rebar pole in the middle keeps them in place.

Next up: digging through the half-decomposed matter in the right box, loosening it up and giving it some air, moving it a bit forward and to the left. Then I'll need help to move the section, I built last summer ... does it need a renewal, the pallets were a bit suspect ... and attach it securely to the new part. Maybe the second box will also have some 2x4 as guide for boards -- time will tell.

I can't shake the habit ... so ... Today's Wordle. Great.
For once I did not know the word that is the solution.

    1. They are. The rhubarbs are thriving, and the fruit bushes flowering as for a show. Sadly tonigth we had a frost. I hope they all survived.

  2. That's a LOT of work and I know I wouldn't be able to do it. My daughter has a compost bin on a stand with a handle to rotate it so no shovelling is required.

    1. Aww, sounds smart, but I doubt it would be able to handle the amounts, we put into our heaps - or that I could turn it, if it could.
