One of our hens is a freedom loving hen. It has defied  extended fences and cut off wing feathers and flown out and in of the coop as it liked. But for the last week or so, nobody have seen the eloping hen. We agreed that the fox probably ate her.
But today MotherOwl, the Writer and the Owlet + visiting oldest Son used a wonderful sunshiny day to cut down old brambles, pick up apples and generally just tidy the garden. Suddenly strange hen-like sounds came from a shrubbery. We looked, and saw the missing hen. We first thought that it was caught in the branches, bt soon discovered that she sat there by her own will. She had made a nest there.
Oldest Son picked up the hen and MotherOwl removed all the eggs, the hen was let loose and made a bee line for her nest clucking and complaining at the sight of the emptiness. The Owlets felt sorry for the hen, and Mother Owl drew X'es on 6 of the eggs and replaces those in the nest. The hen laid down clucking, not quite satisfied. The rest of the day we were met with angry sounds if we came too close.
The coming days we will be taking away the egg without X'es, the newly laid ones
  • No less than 22 eggs in the nest. But as we have no rooster our broody hen labours in vain.

We found other egg as well. They were laid out as titbits for the hens.

  • Æg fra dræbersnegle - øv!
  • Egg from the Spanish slug - Urgh!

  1. Uglemor,

22 eggs? You need to make quiche! That's what we had for dinner last night. Delicious! I feel just a little bit sorry for your broody hen.

    1. Nope, we did not eat the eggs. I left 6 with xxx on them for the broody hen. The rest were thrown out, a broody hen is very hot, and some of them avere 21 days old and very ripe. Quiche sounds delicious.
