Saturday News ~ Lørdagssmåtterier

Yesterday and again today I stood on ladders, first to pick elderberry flowers, later on to paint our new shed, and experienced what I have experienced many times before -- a thing I call The Ladder Mystery.
First I was very afraid of just standing on our 6-step stepladder, but after a while I had no problems standing at the upper rungs of our really tall long ladder stretching to paint all the boards. Why is it like this?
--  🪜  --

-- 🪜 --

I solved today's Wordle, no Ta-daas or anything, just me being stupid, and the solution being a word I absolutely did not know was even a word ... it's just a name for me!

--  🪜  --

Poetry Monday :: Passover

Poetry Monday is a blogging game invented long ago. Mimi of Messymimi's Meanderings and I are keeping it alive until Diane @ On the Border returns home from her break of health and relaxation, travelling the world with her husband as far as we can tell.

We just hope she's going to take back over once she returns home.

The prompts now come from 365 Days of Drawing Prompts and other Arts group. This is a Facebook group with a prompt for each day of the year, but no worries, the prompts will still be here and at Mimi's blog.

Today's prompt is: Passover

Woe is me. I read River's Mimi's blog and poem before writing one myself.

Add to this that I found Passover a hard theme for a poem, and that I - as every Easter Monday - forget that it IS Monday because it's a holiday ... lots of excuses, I never got to write anything, but in the "rules" for Poetry Monday it said somewhere that You're allowed to copy somebody else's poetry. That's what I'm going to do.

This spiritual actually tells the story of Passover, Easter, and salvation.

When Israel was in Egypt’s land,
Let My people go!
Oppressed so hard they could not stand,
Let My people go!

Refrain:
Go down, Moses,
Way down in Egypt’s land;
Tell old Pharaoh
To let My people go!

'Thus spoke the Lord,' bold Moses said
Let my people go!
'If not I'll smite your first born dead.'
Let my people go!

No more shall they in bondage toil,
Let My people go!
Let them come out with Egypt’s spoil,
Let My people go!

Oh, let us all from bondage flee,
Let My people go!
And let us all in Christ be free,
Let My people go!

Sunday Selection :: Palm Sunday Edition :: Colour26
Søndagsbilleder :: Palmesøndag :: Colour 26

Today is Palm Sunday. As the Danish climate does not allow palm trees, we use boxwood branches instead.
-- ⸙⸙ --

For many years this cross had me mumbling not so nice words. It's just not made for tucking palm branches behind, neither through the hanger. This year I simply drilled a hole where the two parts meet and put the palm branch into the hole. Perfect!
-- ⸙⸙ --

Our combined work-, laundry-, and scullery needed a wall clock. This one was perfect. The only bother was that as soon as I had hung it up, I had to take it right back down to adjust it to that dang-blasted Daylight Saving Time, that began this night. Notice the small hand - it is the colour of the Month: Ocean Twilight Blue!
-- ⸙⸙ --
Det her passer fint.
Notice teh owl-hook. Finally I got them up. It and oits mate, shown below was a Christmas gift in 2024.
-- ⸙⸙ --

And Friday I found a new, children's rake. I use it in my greenhouse and mainly for the mucking of the chicken coop, where there's no room for full sized utensils. The old one was worn out - yes you can wear out a rake! The new one got some spray paint before its first job.
-- ⸙⸙ --

-- 🌙 --

I only have one picture today.
This Wednesday the 18th is Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent until Easter, which is not until April 5th.

The evening before, on the 17th, Ramadan begins, the Muslim fast leading up to Eid al-Fitr a month later.

All this just to show you a picture of a Ramadan calendar I saw the other day while out shopping. I think it's really cool, and I wish our Advent calendars were just as pretty and colourful.

I see some Electric rose - the colour of the month - in this calendar. At least in the house centre right.

Words for Wednesday :: January 28

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over as a moveable feast with many participants supplying the Words.
When Delores closed her blog forever due to other problems, Elephant's Child (Sue) took over the role of coordinator.
Now, after Sue's demise it is still to be discerned who will take over this role, River is doing it for the rest of 2025, but maybe Lissa will eventually be our new coordinator.

No matter what, how, where or who the aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to our mind.

This month the words are again supplied byWiseWebWoman and can be found at River's blog.

If you are posting an entry on your own blog, please leave a comment on River's blog, then we can come along and read it and add a few encouraging words.

It is also a challenge, where the old saying "The more the merrier" holds true.

So Please, remember to follow the links, go back and read other peoples' stories. And please leave a comment after reading. Challenges like this one thrives on interaction, feedback and encouragement. And we ALL need encouragement.

We were given these words:
Long
Monk
Novice
Spiritual
Time
    and/or:
Ants
Boy
Compassion
Stream
Trapped

I use the first set of words for more explanation of this Sunday's mass which left me temporally confounded. For once a real-life story.

It was a solemn mass, with the  the Vatican's Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, as the prime celebrant, to commemorate the 1200th anniversary of Saint Ansgar being sent to Denmark in 826 along with the newly baptised Danish king, Harald Klak. Saint Ansgar went along to keep the king to his new, Christian faith, to possibly build a church, and start converting what was then the wild, heathenish and violent Vikings of the north.
Ansgar was the only one brave enough to step forth, and exchanging the life in an Frankish monastery for the uncertain life of a missionary. He only partially succeeded, he was beaten, robbed, forced to retreat to the south, returning and actually build a church where Christians continued to be present throughout the times. He had a bit better luck in Sweden, but nothing big.

Sunday morning I took the train to Copenhagen. It's a long journey, longer on Sundays because of fewer trains and buses. Once an hour for me here in the countryside. First I went to a crafting fair, I bought some lovely many coloured pieces of wood, I saw many great ideas, and learned new things. One by one I was joined by three of my sons - craft here includes woodworking, carving knives, and strangely tasting really hot sauces, 3D printing, and other things interesting for young men as well.

Then we took the metro to our cathedral, and waited. We arrived early, and what a luck, for the church was full and overfull before long. It was a great mass. Cardinal Piero Parolin had come all the way from Rome to celebrate with us, more of the Nordic bishops were present. Among those the Bishop of Reykjavik - looking for all the world like a comic strip Franciscan monk - and young Bishop Fredrik of Norway of whom I had written in a periodical, and forgot to bring some for him. Sigh!

The choir sang beautifully, no novices those, and Cardinal Pietro Parolin held a nice, spiritual sermon.

After the mass we all walked to a nearby hotel, where we spent a joyous and cheerful time, listening to speeches, eating tidbits, meeting old friends, talking, and admiring the Bishops' gifts and the anthology written in celebration of Saint Ansgar's life and woks in Denmark.

Here's my less than stellar shot of Cardinal Pietro Parolin preaching:
You can see the official pictures from the mass and the celebration afterwards here.

Sunday Selection Sunday Gaudete ~
Søndagsbilleder, Gaudete søndag

My forage into ancestry is still not done. And while it's difficult in some ways, it's easier than I thought in other ways. The Sundays in days of old had names. Dominica Oculi, Dominica Lætare, Dominica Judica. And while some of those were new to me, Judica for instance, others were quite normal, like Lætare and the name of today, Dominica Gaudete.

-- 🕯 --

Christmas celebrations in the Owlery is only just starting. Of course we have an advent "wreath" not wreath shaped, but it's there. Today we light the third candle, it should be rose coloured. Maybe even  Trash Pink - my colour of the month. Some said it was a ind of shocking pink, and today's message is shocking. The one rose coloured candles one among the purple ones, tells  us to be joyful. It's Sunday Gaudete. REJOICE!
It has its name from one of Paulus' letters, where he says:"Gaudete in Domino semper: iterum dico, gaudete." Which means in English: Be joyful in the Lord always, I say to you, be joyful!  And yes it's an order, (the imperative plural form of the verb gaudere, to be happy, to rejoice and similar).

Saint Paul orders us to rejoice! It's a tall order, actually. It's not always easy. We're busy, stressing out and hurrying around. It's dark, dreary and cold. And if we look further afield there's chaos and terror and idiocy enough to make every one NOT the least  bit positive. But throughout the ages on the third Sunday of advent, we've been met with this command: Rejoice.

Today a small child was baptized during mass. This is the true reason for our joy. We are the children of God - End of sermon.

 -- 🕯 --  Gaudete
  -- 🕯 --

 -- 🕯 --  Gaudete
  -- 🕯 --

I've not been busy taking pictures of other than old church registers, not interesting for most people, or "practical photos" to study, to remember or to tell of something specific.

My Sunday selection will be at bit strange, bear with me.

 -- 🕯 --

A deer, woven in bark. Could we re-create it? - we could.

A mast, put out to improve mobile phone reception in our village. Is it very ugly and disturbing?
En mast, der skal forbedre vores mobildækning. Er den meget grim og forstyrrende?

Yet another modular star. Is it prettier in white?

Godt nytår ~ Happy New Year

-- 🕯 -- 🕯 -- 🕯 -- 🕯 --

No, I have not yet turned senile and is mixing up days, months and years. But today we began a new liturgical year. A reason to celebrate,

I also cleaned the big window and did some other thing, but pictures will have to wait. I forgot, and suddenly it was too dark.

Words for Wednesday ~ Father Paul's Second Quandary

The original Words for Wednesday was begun by Delores and eventually taken over as a moveable feast with many participants supplying the Words.
When Delores closed her blog forever due to other problems, Elephant's Child (Sue) took over the role of co-ordinator.
Now, after Sue's demise River at Drifting through Life has taken over as our new coordinator. Thanks!

No matter what, how, where or who the aim of the words is to encourage us to write. A story, a poem, whatever comes to our mind.

This month the words are again supplied by Sean Jeating, who thankfully stepped in when our regular supplier was MIA, and can be found at River's blog.

Technique
Think
Taught
Way
Completely
    and/or:
Learn
Write
Exist
Reading
Lost

I read the words on Wednesday, and then I took a long, warm soak. Bathing always makes me think. This time my thoughts went to my dear Father Paul from Mary, Allan and the End of the World. But it was not until today I finally found time to sit down and write out what I though.

All this happens years, maybe 15 years after Father Paul's Quandary

Father Paul had begun to feel old. He was the only priest in their settlement. As far as he knew, he was the only priest on all of the Earth. They had found another settlement in what had been the south of Italy, and the Italians had all moved close to their settlement, making a satellite village, where Father Paul went every Saturday evening and did what priestly things had to be done, mostly baptisms and confessions. Early Sunday morning, he celebrated mass and then walked back home in time for mass in the big "town" where all the rest of the settlers lived in small clusters, much like the villages of old Europe. But now he was beginning to tire, and on his weekly treks he was thinking. One Sunday after mass he spoke with Allan and Mary and Tom, the old pilot who had been the rock steady leader of the community for years, but now had stepped down to give room for younger people.
Father Paul scratched his long, grey beard and looked at them: "I have been thinking, lately. We survived the end of the world, didn't we. But if it was the end of the world, what then? God promised to be with us all days until the end of the world. Did the world really end, and am I only a parody of a priest? ... and more to the point, what will happen when I die?"

"You've been doing some tough thinking," Tom said. I am not a theologian, I was never good at discussing fine points from the Bible for days on end."
"I'm no better," Allan said. "I always asked the priest when I had that kind of questions. I always meant to ask you such questions, but I never made it that far. We've been busy ..."

"And now we're old ... " father Paul said despondently. "It's not dying that scares me, I'll happily meet my Creator and Boss," he smiled softly, "But the thought that scares me is: 'what will happen to the world'  I feel that, striving as we are, we're only a parenthetical bump on the last pages of Earth's cruel history."

In the end Tom declared a common day of prayer and fasting on the next Friday.

It was Robert who after the day of fasting and prayers asked to have the word. He started by carefully opening Father Paul's worn Bible and reading aloud from Matthew 28.20: "Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world" When I studied - he looked directly at Fr. Paul - you see I had the idea of becoming a priest once too, but then I had trouble with so many things, languages, celibacy, obedience ... that my mentor sent me back home to think it over, I then became a mechanics ... and met Liza, he said smiling fondly at his wife, having her hands full with their children. But we were always reading this chapter as "All days until the ends of the world" - plural, not the end. And tell me - where does the world end?" He looked at them all after his rhetorical question. "No, the world has no ends. This is one of God's jokes." He turned once again to Father Paul: "Tell me, please, does your sacraments still work? Are we still cleansed in baptism, forgiven when you say 'Ego te absolvo', and are bread and wine still turned into blood and body of our lord Jesus Christ upon your word?"
Father Paul rose to his feet and looked admiringly and with gleaming eyes at the young man. "You're right, and what more is, you have put it in terms I, and anybody else can if not verify, then at least feel. Of course we still have to believe, but ... I'm convinced. The ends of the world indeed," He sat down laughing.

Robert waited for silence to be restored before continuing: "And furthermore I was taught that in times of need anyone, even those not baptized, can baptise whomever needs it in any kind of water, only not beer or pee. Am I even right there, Father?"
Father Paul managed: "Water, any kind of water, not beer, milk soup or any such," before he began laughing in earnest. His laughter was echoed from many of the people gathered in the room.
Robert continued: "Really it's no laughing matter, but I was also taught that God understands laughter, whereas the devil does not. So to resume ... In the same way, you are the only priest of the whole world, as far as we know anyway, and in times of need you will legitimately be able to create new priests when you find the right ones."

Robert sat down and Father Paul went over to him, where he sat next to his wife. they spoke together in low voices for a short while, then Fr. Paul went to the lectern. He looked around at the people in the big room, drew a deep breath and said: "Thank you, Robert. Thank you everybody. We have all come a long way from when we thought the world ended. According to Robert it has not, and won't before its time is truly up. Not by any human derision, but in God's own time." He smiled and looked at everybody, they looked back at him, some of the children fidgeting.

He continued: "I'll keep this short.  Because still I'm not as young as I used to be, and your propensity to multiply and fill the world is wearing me down. I need help. And Robert just volunteered to become a permanent deacon, able to baptise, marry, and hold sermons. He already gave us a nice test sermon, I dare say. And if anybody has anything to say against him being thus ordained speak now - or at least before next Sunday to me privately - or be silent ever after!"

Here ends this spin-of from Mary, Allan and the End of the World.

Sunday Selection: Rain

I torsdags så vores frøsø sådan her ud.
We have had dry times here. Thursday our pond looked like this.
Fredag regnede det 19 mm. 💧 Friday we had 19 mm of rain.

Saturday it only rained a little, 3 mm, but we emptied a blue barrel of rainwater into the pond, 120 litres
💧

Sunday was the yearly pligrimage - outdoors - and it rained

Søndag eftermiddag så frøsøen sådan her ud 💧Sunday late the pond looked like this.
Der må godt komme lidt mere regn 💧We still need a bit more water

Et billede fra vores regnvåde valfart 💧 A photo from our rainy pilgrimage
Almost everybody had left. The final procession and blessings were shortened. The four men in black at the statue of Our Lady of Aasebakken is our bishop (in the red cap) two priests and the main altar server. Normally they're dressed for the occasion - it was too wet today.

Askeonsdag ~ Ash Wednesday

Today is Ash Wednesday. This day marks the beginning of the big fast - the one lasting all of 40 days from now to Easter. If you're now doing the maths and get more than 40 days from today until Easter Ssunday, you're doing it right. But  if you subtract the Sundays -- as they are not days of fasting ever, but feast days always in memory of the Resurrection -- then you'll get exactly 40 as the result.

I think we're keeping the lenten activities simpel this year. No candy and more prayers; I'll probably find our Lenten bean jar and as I wrote one Easter morning long ago:
All the beans in our Lenten jar have "miraculously" turned into jelly beans as we returned home from mass. And as usually good deeds are being done much more frequently than when the jar contained only dried beans. But as a symbol of God's mercy, the jar keeps filling itself all during Easter time.

Maybe I'll print a Lenten cross. One square to colour each day of Lent. Let's keep it simple.

-- ♱ --

Helt enkelt.

Where Did We go?

Normally when I totally disappear from Blogland for more than a few days it is because I'm not at home and able to use my computer.

It was like this ... we rose in the middle of the nigth on January 30. Then we went to Copenhagen by taxi, train and metro - the buses had not started running yet. Then we fought a digital device ... standard for us apparently on these occasions - stood in line, then we went out into the dark and cruel cold night and waited some more and took another vehicle, waited once more, then we waited some more and took a bus ...

And then we were here:

Next day I was woken up by a solitary bird singing from a plane tree:

We visited the church dedicated to this guy and afterwards we went down into the catacombs

I think by now you all have guessed that we went to Rome.

The Scandinavian bishops' Conference had organized a pilgrimage for the holy year, and we were 150 from all Denmark and around 1000 people from the Scandinavian countries, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Finland. Including all seven bishops! One from each of the dioceses of Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Finland, and all three from Norway.

More pictures:

Waiting for our turn to go through the holy door in the Lateran Basilica, the bishop of Copenhagen tells a bit about the church.

That same afternoon we went through the holy door in S. Maria Maggiore.

Next day was the high point of the pilgrimage:

Meeting the pope

Through the holy door in Saint Peter's

And mass with all the Scandinavian bishops there.

Of course we also saw other places, ate pizzas - not much ice, as it was quite chilly - drank cappuccinos and just enjoyed the stay. Of course we hope to return to this city once again.

I even succeeded in using almost all the Words for Wednesday:
1 - cruel
2 - return
3 - sneak
4 - solitary
5 - middle

And my colour? I'm sure the sky, or the mosaics or the water or ...contain

Poetry Monday :: Epiphany or Seed :: Updated

Today is Epiphany. Time to undress the Christmas tree and put it outside - poor thing; we have sleet and 2 degrees above zero. It's time to take down the big window advent calendar. And while I do so, I'll be composing a poem for today, Poetry Monday ... at least I hope this will happen. Else you're in for a re-post from another year.

In church yesterday we sang this tune - I don't really want to call it a hymn, because the melody is a lilting dance. I tried translating/recreating it so that it can be sung to the tune and mostly rhymes and have equivalent meaning. I hope I just somewhat succeeded. Link to an old rendering of the tune below.

at finde Jesus i krybben trang.
The holy three kings so happy at heart
from home a journey so long did they start.
They travelled to Betlehem far away
to find a babe, in a manger he lay.
A star shone over their journey each day
led them to the saviour-king in the hay
And a child they did find, lovely and fair
With oxes and ass in the stable there
And down they finally fell to their knees,
as they saw the heavenly child, King of Peace,
And frankincense, myrrh and precious gold
they gave to the child as was former foretold.
And then they went homewards each to his realm
and praised their Creator with glee overwhelmed.
Let us also fall to our knees before Him
And give him our heart filled with thanks to the brim!
 Han er den Jakobs-stjerne klar,
en kvist af Israel åbenbar,
en kilde, der springer af nåde stor,
en Herre over alt englekor.
He is the star of Jacob we know,
a sprout of Israel that we see grow,
a fountain that springs with graces for all,
a Lord of angelic choirs - born in a stall.
For this we ought to be glad and rejoice
with blissful singing and joyous noise,
until we in Him - the source of our joy -
eternally sing our hallelujah!

The Words for Wednesday May 1 & IWSG ~ Updated

This challenge started a long time ago. Now it has turned into a movable feast with Elephant's Child as our coordinator; and the Words provided by a number of people.

The general idea of this challenge is to make us write. Poems, stories, subtitles, tales, jokes, haiku, crosswords, puns, ... you're the boss.
Use all Words, some Words, one Word, or even none of them if that makes your creative juices flow. Anything goes, only please nothing rude or vulgar.

It is also a challenge, where the old saying
"The more the merrier" holds true.

So Please, remember to follow the links, go back and read other peoples' stories. And please leave a comment after reading. Challenges like this one thrives on interaction, feedback and encouragement. And we ALL need encouragement.

Today's Words are chosen by David M. Gascoigne and published at Elephant's Child's blog.

We were given:

Least
Fundamental
People
Satisfaction
Excited

    and/or
Natural
Trashed
Profligacy
Fragile
Future

I will write, but not today. I was derailed by sunshine, a knitting club and too many meals 😉

Today is also the first Wednesday of the month. Time for the monthly Question from the Insecure Writers' Support Group

May 1 question: How do you deal with distractions when you are writing? Do they derail you?

My answer: I am a mother of 6 children, distractions in the form of noise, questions to be answered, conflicts to be solved, catastrophes to be allayed etc. do not in general derail me. I get up, deal with it and write on.
Meals are worse, as they demand my wholehearted presence for a prolonged time, and always it's time for a meal, when I just got in the flow.
And what can, and do, derail me is gaming, or reading other peoples' blogs. I try not to get derailed this way, but sometimes I am just sucked into that black hole existing in the screen.

Update:
As a young one, I discussed with God whether my caling was to a monastery or to a family life. Ever since, I have with varying sucess - mostly failing for the last couple of years, but with spring and May rolling around with renewed steam - worked on making family life into a training for monastic virtues.

Obedience
Just like monks and nuns are required to leave whatever they're doing, and go to the chapel when the bell sounds. I have been - am still - practising to leave what I am doing when family calls.

Askeonsdag ~ Ash Wednesday

Today is Ash Wednesday, Pirate and I remain at home while the rest of the family is at church where they receive the ashes. We're having a cold, Pirate is on the mend, while I just woke up with it today.

Normally you renounce, forsake some thing for lent, in years past I tried sweets or computer time. This year I'm more airy and repeat this piece of every day philosophy:

Time is not time, an hour is not an hour. Think: Waiting for a dentists' appointment ... that hour is interminable, sitting here writing on the other hand it whizzes past. Picking apples, riding my bike, playing or talking with my children, drawing, praying, or making jam, an hour seems to be of the right length.

This lent I'll concentrate on making more of what makes an hour last an hour.

PS:
Words for Wednesday to come, maybe tomorrow.
