A strange photo from Wednesday morning. Anyone dare to guess. Is it a blue zebra seen up close? An old record with Water Music? An underwater unicorn? ...

It is what is left in the bottom of the wonderful cooking pot the morning after our indigo dyeing.

We learned a lesson yesterday. The indigo cookbook says that this dye is good for 1 kg of yarn. When we had dyed this amount, the dye bath still did not look exhausted. We put in some more hanks, they did not only not turn any more blue, they lost some of their colour. MotherOwl tucked in the first blue hank, tied in various places in order to get a variegated yarn. It lost colour all over.
We later agreed that the Sodium dithionite in the vat must have acted as a dye remover. But we're far from sure that this is the right - or the only - explanation.
