The last two weeks MotherOwl has been working on renewing the herbal beds. If you're that kind of person that finds herbs or slow progress, or both boring, now is the time to stop reading this blog post ;) More action will surely be forthcoming later, but this is a post of baby steps.
This rambling post is furthermore guaranteed to repeat pictures and stories already shown/told on this blog.

Sådan her:
In the beginning ... oh some 20 years ago, MotherOwl made a herbal bed. It was a small, very conveniently placed bed. Parsley, thyme, chives and dill were planted, basil as well, but it was too cold. A lovage in an old cement pipe rounded off the place.
Over the years different things were planted there as well; peppermints, tarragon, sage, ...
In the end the bed became too small, the herbs spread everywhere in the garden. The mints grew wild, the lovage died, weeds and grasses crept in, and bindweed!
Some years ago the bed was made over. Like this:

To prevent the whole garden from turning into one big herbal bed, MotherOwl made a new herbal bed to supplement the old one. But it was filled up with flowers, and the ubiquitous peppermints. Once again the herbs spread all over.
The mints deserve a chapter to themselves. In the beginning was a Moroccan mint. Then I was given a better, more tasty English variety. The English mint was planted in, after extermination of the Moroccan one - MotherOwl was dreaming. Mints cannot be exterminated! The English mint moved to the new bed to save it from being pulled up. Then MotherOwl got another mint - a chewing gum tasting one. Very strong and good. It was planted in another bed. Now the old bed was filled with Moroccan and English mints, the new bed interspersed with English mint - only. And a Chewing gum mint growing where beans were supposed to grow. Argh.
The new, bigger bed summer 2012, a year old, but already real messy. |
The old bed was almost overtaken by mints and Russian tarragon, buttercups of the creeping variety and Couch grass. Even the lovage was dying.

Something just had to be done. The new bed is to be dug through. Last Thursday MotherOwl began the big dig of ´15 a small bit was dug, all the flower bulbs were given to the Pirate with a dibber. The bulbs got transplanted. Then the parsley and the chives moved to the newly dug corner. That was all for Thursday, and two big buckets of roots and weeds were given to the hens.
Torsdag - persille og purløg er flyttet. Der er stadig nogle gule krokus tilbage. Thursday - Parsley and chives have been moved. There's still some crocusses left. |
Tirsdag fortsatte det store bed-show.
Friday and Saturday were too cold for gardening. MotherOwl does not like cold.
Monday only a little digging was done.
Tuesday the big dig recommenced. MotherOwl moved two of the four thymes, the cement pipe and the lovage and a few sprigs of Russian tarragon. The lovage was set free in the new bed, whereas the tarragon was imprisoned in the pipe.
Less two thyme plants and a pipe. You can't see that a few sprigs of the tarragon was moved as well. |
Wednesday the big dig continued. MotherOwl dug through more of the new bed and found a Cicely. It was duly transplanted to the weeded end og the bed. The two last thymes were moved as well. It's quite a task. Firt the plant is dug up, well shaken; and the roots are then carefully freed from roots of grass, bindweed and mint. Then a big hole is dug in the new bed, the plant tucked in with a nigthcap of water and manure.

... to be continued.
