TUSAL 4 - 2017 |

As seen in yesterday's TUSAL post, I started rag rugging again. The Walrus had promised me his old duvet cover for weaving when is was worn through, and some weeks ago he put his finger through it, and I held him to his promise. It was washed and has been tempting me with its colours every time I passed by.
At The Country Farm Home I found a new way to make rag rugs and had to try it off. First the cover was torn into strips and wound into balls.

To make rag rugs like at the Country Farm House a small rag rug loom was needed. MotherOwl has lots of scrap woods, so no problem.
The first square - which is more square in real life - turned out nice, but rather loose. A trial run as pot holder was not a success. The weaving parted, with burnt fingers as a result. Flunked!
Hvalrossens betræk er blevet til en grydelap. Walrus' covers made into pot holder. |

Next pot holder was better. Warp and weft are closer together, and I did not burn my fingers. It's all right, but not more, and this way of weaving does not really fascinate me. Maybe the strips need to be even broader, I think I'll make one try more, using the jeans legs still lying in a crate.
My rigid heddle loom can be used (with the heddle removed) for really big mats.

A couple of pictures of my rag rug loom. It measures app. 21 cm between the rows of spikes and double that in length. The middle spikes (in the red circle) are different which makes it easier to find the middle when weaving equilateral squares. Distance between spikes is 1.5 cm.
Fire stykker træ, fire skruer og en masse søm :) Four pieces of wood, four screws and a lot of spikes :) |

I'll probably end up weaving the Walrus' cover into a rag rug on my loom using a multicoloured warp like this one. I already found yarn for the warp.

Your homemade looms are very interesting and inspiring! and the center indicating spike is so clever - no measuring or counting.
