Vi købte et rødkålshoved, snittede og hældte kogende demineraliseret vand over, det er bedre at lave sæbe af, end vand fra hanen. Vi endte med noget smukt lilla vand.

Some days ago Pia from ColourCottage made me think. Red cabbage, or rather water form boiling it, is sensitive to changes in pH. Maybe we could make a soap that tells when it is ready for use?
We bought, cut and sliced some red cabbage, and because it was meant for soap making, we used some demineralized water, not tap water, and poured it boiling over the shredded cabbage. We got a lot of pretty dark pink water.

Neutralt rødkålsvand skulle være blåt og ikke lilla. Vi skød skylden på det demineraliserede vand, det måtte være underligt.
Så blandede vi forskellige syrer og baser i. De sure glas skiftede til de forventede pink - rød - rosa farver, men de basiske blev bare gule i forskellige nuancer, måske med en let grønligt tone.

Water with neutral pH ought to be blue, not pinkish at all. We blamed it on the demineralization and continued testing. We put acetic acid in 3 of the glasses, a little, a bit more and a lot, and did the same with 3 other glasses and Sodium hydroxide (I did the putting in with the Owlets looking). The acetic glasses obliged us by turning red to pink; all well. But the alkaline all turned yellow - a green tinged yellow maybe - but yellow, neither blue nor green.

We measured off the right amount of water with cabbage and Sodium hydroxide for the soap. And after mixing it was a nice orange yellow colour.

Så fandt jeg nogle pHstrimler frem og målte. Det så sært ud. Alle de basiske var helt ude i enden, og den neutrale var sur (pH 6.0). Hvordan kunne det nu være?
Så testede vi vand fra hanen, og det var så godt som neutralt. Det deminerliserede vand måtte også testes. Rødkålen var ikke økologisk, så måske var der rester af et eler andet middel på.

MotherOwl found some pH test strips and we tested. The neutral and the ones with acetic acid were acetic, and the ones with sodium hydroxide all very alkaline. Strange things happening here.
We tested our tap water. It was near neutral. We tested the demineralized water as well. I had not been able to find organic cabbage, so maybe some pesticide played tricks with the pH.
Jeg hældte noget kogende vand fra hanen over kålen og det blev smukt blåt med let lilla tone. Lørdag havde vi købt noget ny salmiakspiritus på et loppemarked, Jeg syntes ikke rigtigt det lugtede stærkt nok, men en lille sjat af det i et glas med det nye neutrale, gav en smuk grøn, så jo, det var godt nok.
Og rødkålsindikatoren virkede også. Der måtte være en fejl et eller andet sted. pH på vores postevand var ca 7, og det demineraliserede vand altså 6,0. Meget sært.

We made some new test water it turned blue as expected. I then tested some ammonia bought on a flea marked. Id made the water green, both the ammonia and the indicator worked as expected. There had to be a bug somewhere.

Jeg indså så at jeg selv havde hældt det demineraliserede vand over på en dunk der havde indeholdt eddike. Selv om jeg havde skyllet den grundigt i flere hold vand, var noget af det sure åbenbart blevet der. Vi lærte så at man ikke skal hælde ting over i andre beholdere.

I realized that I was the cause of the bug. I had poured the demineralized water into a container, that had contained vinegar, and even if I had flushed the jug several times it obviously had contaminated the contents anyway. A lesson in never pouring things in other than their original containers.

SletAt pH-værdier skulle være temperaturfølsomme er nyt for mig, men da sæbelud bliver endog meget varm, er det også en mulighed.
