We called it fire engine red, too. Ours are now that same greenish yellow in our area, but the big town has white ones with red markings, and some of the smaller towns use the red still.
Not bad either. Actually I think you're right Fire engines and mail boxes all were a deeper, not pure red. As you can see from the colour code, thus is pure red, and Fire engines and postboxes all mixed in a bit of blue and yellow as far as I can see.
