MotherOwl has been bit by the Sock bug. Since yesterday 3 more socks has been cast on and knit at least a little. The hat for Big Sister is also progressing.
All kint with yarn from my stash barrel. All my knitting pins are old as well, some of the thin one are bent and worn, but as there's a lot of them it does not matter, I can have dormant projects on the bent needles and knit with the good ones.

Strikkeonsdag -- Yarn Along
Netstrikkeklub -- Yarn along
- - - - - -
With the Pirate and now also Marsupilami asking for home knitted socks, there's no way out. MotherOwl went to Ravelry - this magic place for anything remotely yarn related. And as MotherOwl has a great deal of Pippi Longstocking in her, she found a how-to knit toe-up socks including a description of Judy Becker's Magical Cast On. Well in for a penny in for a pound, the only thing MotherOwl did not go with, was magic loop knitting; she has a thing with circular needles. They're just plain stupid.
- - - - -
It was not as easy as it seemed, and knitting with cobwebs on darning needles - sock yarn and needles 2½ (metric) - as opposed to needles 6 and that brown/white yarn did not help any.
But look - it actually looks like a Pirate-sized sock toe. All of a sudden MotherOwl realized that those hexapuffs she had been admiring from a distance for so long must be knit in this exact way *Big smile*.
- - - - -
For in-between knitting MotherOwl cast on for another hat from the brown/white yarn. This will most probably use it up (maybe there'll be enough for one extra mitten for the Pirate; time will tell). Big Sister visited Monday, and told MotherOwl that such a hat would be welcome on her head as well. Show me the mother able to resist such a plea ;)

Sære planter i mit vindue -- Strange Plants in my Window
- - - - - -
MotherOwl has a window sill - of course she ghas several more - but this one is special because all her strange plants are growing there. The picture is super bad quality, but as the main attraction is withered and will be harvested this week, I can not make new photos.

The Ginger, which was the star of the windowsill while it lasted, with 1½ metres long stems much like bamboo, has now withered, and will be harvested tomorrow, at which point this blogpost will be updated with pictures of the harvest.
Cuban oregano is a very prolific plant. I was given a little plant by a neighbour last spring, and since it has just grown and grown, I have given away quite a number of plants and many more are now making rootlets in a cup of water. My plan is to grow them in the garden once it's hot enough. Then I just have to find out how to cook with them, the tries so far were not successful., it might be an acquired taste.
Dyer's knotweed is my problem child. 2011 saw lots of growing plants. One day I planned to pick them next day, and that night a totally unexpected and very early frost killed them all. 2012 my 2 survivors were eaten by mysterious bugs. I hope better for this year. It should dye a delicious blue, and blue is my most favourite colour.
The Aloe was brought home from an ecological fair by Big Sister when she was only 4 or 5 years old. She won, an chose a plant over vanity items and playthings ;) It was a hard journey home 70 km by several trains and buses with Big sister, the Penguin, then not quite a year old and a plant, but it survived and has cooled and healed many a burn since then.
Sansevieria brings forth childhood memories of my paternal grandmother. Her apartment was a veritable jungle with those plants and Oleandres all over. I remember as a very small girl reading old magazines with fingers sticky from the sap dripping from their flowers.

- - - - -
When reading Chrunchy Catholic Momma's latest Stash Bashing post, I realized that a stash is not just yarn. Other things can be stash as well, but still it'll be mostly yarny today as well.
projekt (alle Ugleboets indbyggere får hver aften to stykker chokolade
- - - - -
Chocolate is the greatest source of candy wrappers for this project (all inhabitants in the Owlery eat two pieces of chocolate every day - except Friday - after dinner). Müsli bags are great as well, and MotherOwl has a big box of those, they're just not so happily coloured as candy wrappers. The last one is made from diverse candy bags/wrappers and lego minifigure bags (the faces).

- - - - -
The brown stripe is made so that Minimax easily will be able to grab his own mittens when leaving the house in a hurry - he's always in a hurry. And just to prove that I do not show off the same mittens several times, here's a group photo:
- - - - -
MotherOwl learned candy wrapper bag-making some time ago, but as she does not use bags - just an old backpack, the method has been dormant. But rings made this way are great for insulating glasses with hot cocoa for the Owlets on cold days.

Strikkeonsdag -- Yarn Along
MotherOwl is still busy knitting hats and mittens for the Owlets in our winter time. Minimax's new hat is done, and an extra pair of mittens for the Pirate will be finished before school is out tomorrow. His mittens are always soaked when I pick him up, and shopping with bare hands or wet mittens is a cold enterprise with our wonderful sub-zero temperatures.
MotherOwl is very proud Alomost 8 mittens and 2 hats finished since I joined Yarn Along at Little Things.

Leve i nuet -- Living Now
Three years ago MotherOwl braved a Danish blizzard to get Trolli to a concert, where he was playing ... he plays the piano.
Danish blizzards are very tame, it was blowing and snowing, but there werre almost no danger involved. The snow was blown across the roads and looked just like rivers of snow. We enjoyed the spectacular weather and sang during the ride. At the concert everybody agonized about the weather, how much is was snowing, how irritating, how downrigth stupid this snow was. And while waiting for him to be finished, I read a piece about taking in branches to get them into bloom and groving plants under ligthgs as a preparation for spring. This happened February 2nd - the day half the winter has officially passed in Denmark. I then remembered reading similar text on prolonging summer well into autumn, and keeping the "heat" of summer at bay (I write "heat" because if we reach 28 Celsius it is really hot, the mean temperature in July and August being around 15-16 Celsius). Bugger! It's the changing seasons I love most about our climate.
I sat down and wrote a poem, but I can't translate it into English with any elegance. An eulogy on seasons with essentially same contents must take its place:
Crispy, clear winter's days with snow.
Hot, long Summer's days where we swim at the beach and eat ice cream.
Autumn days with that unbelievably blue sky and already yellowing leaves.
Spring with snowdrops, short days, and mud.
Foggy days, thunderstorms, windy and qiuet. I love it all.

Lidt
af hvert om vejr!
Jeg
kan li' solens skin
og
blæsten på min kind.
En
himmel klar og blå
er
skøn at kigge på!
Jeg
kan li' sne og is
og
alt det vejr der gi's.
En
tåget dag i maj
er
lige noget for mig.
Jeg
kan li' tordenvejr
og
regn og storm især.
Ja
selv en gråvejrsdag
kan
sagtens slæbe af!
Et
tøvejrs dryppelyd
kan
fylde mig med fryd.
Kort
sagt: Jeg elsker vejr
så
gi' mig lidt af hvert.

Koldt -- Cold
VINTER - JA TAK!
WINTER - YES, PLEASE
Snow and cold has finally arrived and the hoar frost made everything just perfect.

Minimax knows that MotherOwl loves ice flowers. He picked this specimen on his way home - and no, it was not put in a vase.

The blackbirds are the only ones able to enjoy our very sour apple, but the do so with gusto.

10 degrees below zero, a busy Owlet and an open window resulted in indorr icicles.

Denne gang lykkedes det. Perfekt ahornsirupslik.
Success! Perfect maple syrup candy. All the candy from snow filled utensils was immediately eaten, while my leaves and gingerbread men lasted for a day.

The hat I finished yesterday is itchy - at least according to Minimax. The Pirate proudly wore it to school. But obviously Minimax is just as sensitive as MotherOwl, and he needs a new hat, the old one is made out of polyester or some such, and dingy. In MotherOwl's project room there's the stash barrel, but also a coat rack with plant dyed or to be dyed yarns. From there I picked two, one dyed with Oakmoss and one not dyed. Thickness ok like the old stash yarn. Now to Casting on. Drat it - I only made it to 60 out of 99 with long tail cat on before there was no more tail. MotherOwl carefully pulled the stithces off the needles, measured the tail and did some math.
The surprising result: For a cast on on needles # 6 each stitch needs 1.6 cm of yarn! MotherOwl happily measured off 170 cm (99x1.6 + 10 cm extra tail). The result can be seen below.

Strikkeonsdag -- Yarn Along
- - - - -
Now the hat is finally done. Let's see who gets the honour of wearing it... It is cold enough for hats in any case -10° C this morning. It is like the mittens knit by doing "knit two purl one" and is very elastic. MotherOwl and the 3 biggest Owlets can all use this hat.
|
This was the good news on knitting, the auto-patterning yarn is almost more trouble than it's worth. MotherOwl feel a bit like Penelope, who undid her weaving each night. You could call it negative knitting. The result is that I'm progressing backwards and now have less to show than a week ago.

More assocoations, once I started a novel with the title Footprints on the Window, named after this game. It migth me a hint that I should finish it. I have far too many unfinished projects all over.
Weather: Wonderful snow today!

"Gør noget sært-bogen" som var "Wreck this Journal" which turned into my "Think outside the box-Journal"
I read about Wreck this Journal and thought I wanted one. After sleeping on it, I decided that I needed a Do something strange-Journal. Not necessarily wrecking, but doing things you normally don't do to or with a book. I looked among my (many) unused notebooks and found one strange enough to suit my ideas. Look at the picture, I gave up describing it in Danish. From one end the pages are blank, from the other end they have lines. You do not turn it upside down, but flip it. All clear :)
I then found the instructions from a website, and pasted them into the book with an ex libris.
A random number generator helps me decide which instruction comes next. But as I feel there are too few write or draw strange things, and some instructions requires the WTJ. I feel free to exchange e.g.. Scrub this page (on a black page) with something else. I have choose to write childish rhymes on rain, and after writing held the book into the rain and circled all the drops.

I read about Wreck this Journal and thought I wanted one. After sleeping on it, I decided that I needed a Do something strange-Journal. Strikkeonsdag -- Yarn Along
Ja Uglemor er begyndt at have flere jern i ilden rent strikkemæssigt set.

MotherOwl has been reorganizing homeschooling stuff - I supplement the Owlets' Public school education at home - and that's a biggish job. MotherOwl had not given a thought to knitting posts when Small Thing's Yarn Along popped up in the blogroll yesterday evening. The light was drab, foggy and grey and I wanted some nicer pictures of my newfound projects.
In my barrel stash I found some auto-patterning yarn. It is slow work on needles 2½, but I like that patterning effect, both colour and black and white.
What I'm reading. Mostly school/study books, reading aloud for the Owlets, and books om mushrooms. I don't know why, but this year we're finding lots of mushrooms in gardens and on our way home from school. My favourite right now is "Svampe" (mushrooms) by Edmund Garnweidner.
Uglemor er også faldet over "Wreck this Journal".

Also I've been reading of "Wreck this Journal". It is not translated into Danish, but I'd like to do something like it. MotherOwl feels a need to be thinking outside the box, and this might be the prodding needed.

Helligtrekongersdag -- Epiphany
Epiphany or Twelfth Night:
On this day Christmas ends in the Owlery. The Christmas tree is once again filled with lit candles, a special candle is lit - or in our case 3 candles in a special candle holder. For the last time the Owlets and the Writer and MotherOwl is given small gifts. I Denmark an advent calendar with (biggish) gifts each day from December 1st onwards is the norm, not so in the Owlery. We have our advent window and advent readings. But on each of the 12 days of Christmas the Owlets get a small present, a little bigger on the Sunday of the holy Family and on Epiphany. After dinner the Christmas ornaments are removed from all over and the tree put outside. Only the Nativity scene, where the three wise men has finally joined the angels and shepherds after their long journey, is left standing until the Baptism of the Lord, when the liturgical Christmas season ends.
Herrens åbenbarelse - Hellig tre Konger
Denne dag ender julen i Ugleboet.

Up until today MotherOwl smiled secretly when somebody said that some needles were better for knitting than other. She does not any longer.
I had put the hat on a too long circular needle to try it on, and the went to a knit-in and forgot my normal DPNs, I used another pair and just longed for my regular pins all the time!
Crunchy Catholic Mama is not hosting any Stash Bashing today, but I can stash bash anyway and say a prayer for her while knitting.

Strikketirsdag ...
The Danish name of these blog post have been knitting Tuesday, but as the Yarn along at Little Things always is Wednesday, it's time for a new name
MotherOwl has also been knitting a hat from the same yarn - yes there's more of it - but this knitting bag is lost in our cosy Christmas chaos. Pictures promised when it deigns to appear.
New Year's resolution: Organize all my stuff!
The mittens already have been washed for the first time. We were in the woods yesterday gathering lichen, and all four mittens were filled with mud and mossy water when we returned home.
Today's trip to the woods was cut short as one of the Owlets misjudged the distance, or tripped and ended in the rivulet instead of on the opposite bank.
Nonetheless we met an old pair of ents and a most wonderful mushroomy branch.
Alene at høre dværgene synge "Far over the Misty Mountains Cold" er det hele værd.
And talking of Ents. Yes we have seen The Hobbit, we liked it very much, although we could not keep from wondering why so many small things have to be different from the book. When it is necessary for the flow or for scenic reasons it's fine, but when it does not mean a bit, why then change it?
Well the music alone is worth it. To hear the dwarves sing Far over the Misty Mountains Cold is an indescribable enjoyment. I've been humming, singing and playing it (on the piano from lack of a harp) ever since.
