Strikkeonsdag -- Yarn Along

Netstrikkeklub -- Yarn along

With the Pirate and now also Marsupilami asking for home knitted socks, there's no way out. MotherOwl went to Ravelry - this magic place for anything remotely yarn related. And as MotherOwl has a great deal of Pippi Longstocking in her, she found a how-to knit toe-up socks including a description of Judy Becker's Magical Cast On. Well in for a penny in for a pound, the only thing MotherOwl did not go with, was magic loop knitting; she has a thing with circular needles. They're just plain stupid.

  • Yes it is that very same self patterning yarn. I frogged the beginnings I had made.

It was not as easy as it seemed, and knitting with cobwebs on darning needles - sock yarn and needles 2½ (metric) - as opposed to needles 6 and that brown/white yarn did not help any.

But look - it actually looks like a Pirate-sized sock toe. All of a sudden MotherOwl realized that those hexapuffs she had been admiring from a distance for so long must be knit in this exact way *Big smile*.

For in-between knitting MotherOwl cast on for another hat from the brown/white yarn. This will most probably use it up (maybe there'll be enough for one extra mitten for the Pirate; time will tell). Big Sister visited Monday, and told MotherOwl that such a hat would be welcome on her head as well. Show me the mother able to resist such a plea ;)
  • Der blev regnet igen 99 masker x 1,6 cm + 10 cm = en perfekt ende ;)
  • Again figuring 1.6 cm x 99 stitches + 10 cm = the perfect tail ;)

  1. Your Danish words look so familiar to the Norwegian that I've studied! I just happened along your site from the Yarn Along. Nice to "meet" you, and you have a sweet blog.

    1. Thanks for your kind words. Danish and Norwegian are very similar, I read and understand Norwegian with only sligth troubles - even if those insisting on speaking Nynorsk can be harder to understand.

    1. Thanks to momto5, tina at september and Lori ann. I love that yarn as well and I hope my curiosity will keep me knitting to see what the next row will look like, so that the Owlets soon will have socks.

  4. Uglemor,

"MotherOwl has a great deal of Pippi Longstocking in her" What wonderful words!

I think circular needles are just plain stupid as well. I can't work them out. Is it possible just to use double ended needles where a pattern calls for circular ones? I'd love to know!

I must start knitting again soon. Although we have one more month of summer, I am never ready when the cold weather arrives. It would be great to have a cardigan or two all ready for the girls to wear.

    God bless!

  5. Sue Elvis,
Thanks for your kind words. I've found it always doable whit double ended needles anywhere. If you have your knitting on only 3 needles, and knitting with # 4 it will save some time. I do this, and reserve knitting on four needles with # 5 for start and cast off - all such places where I need both sides to be alike.
Cardigans are as yet beyond my patience. I think I have the record in unfinished cardigans. I have in my stash one dating back to my schooldays in the early seventies ;)
We're now heading for spring, so of course autumn must be on it's way for you. Today it is windy, 8 degrees and all the snow is gone. I hope for a spell of real winter before spring is full upon us in a month or so.

    1. Uglemor,

Thank you for answering my knitting question. That was very helpful!

I only have the patience to knit cardigans because I imagine how beautiful my girls will look in them, and that spurs me on. Their excitement, when they hear I am knitting something just for them, helps too.

Windy and 8 degrees still sounds very wintery to me! I do enjoy hearing all the details of your life in Denmark. Thanks for sharing!
