A-Z Challenge 2025 ~ Y

Warning! This post contains the answer to today's Wordle
Proceed at your own risk

This year I choose an easy way out. Each day I'm going to solve the Wordle of the day, using as starter a word beginning with the letter of the day. I post every day at 6 pm. my time (GMT +2. Dang you DST!)

As the alternative badge, as supplied by Lissa seems to suggest growing things I'll prefer those as starter words, and if at all possible, I'll avoid words containing the same letter more than once
.

I'll maybe add a few words about my chosen starter word if fancy takes me, else I'll just post the solution - or not in the case that I did not solve it.

Y is for Yeast - thank you, Jenny_o. I use Yeast very often, for breads, buns, some cakes and even for my dabbling in mead-brewing. So far only yucky results ... hey another Y-word! Yeast can strangely also be found in the garden; wild yeast live everywhere, and was the culprit behind my exploding bottles of elderflower cordial. Yes they exploded! Leaving shards and cordial all over. Luckily nobody got hurt, as we had just left the kitchen, but I cleaned all of the next day, and the container, I then used for washing powder, and now for the picking of berries, still have a hole where a big shard entered it - I ditched all the washing powder inside it.

Yeast might be a good starter word, in fact I'm sure it is. But today it served mostly to exclude a lot of letters, which turned out to be a good thing. I guessed the word in four tries today, again more luck than skill, earning me a Splendid.

Poetry Monday :: Jam

Mimi of Messymimi's Meanderings and I have taken over the hosting duties, mostly the supplying of the prompts - only temporarily we hope - while Diane at On the Border is taking a break for health and relaxation, travelling the world with her husband as far as we can tell. We just hope she's going to take back over once she returns home.

I have something to ask of you: If you read this and the poetry of others via the links, would you please leave a comment.
Half - if not more - the fun of these challenges is receiving the responses of others
.

Poetry Monday. Jam ... all I can think of is the trouble variety of jam, as in "in a jam". And then one of my own poems start running inside my brain. The song is a repost from November '22, but the backstory is new.
The lines: "I got myself in and I'll get myself out." comes from the Pern books by Anne McCaffrey, where we meet Piemur, a boy of small stature, but a grand scale troublemaker, and very likeable. Once upon a time there was a forum for discussing all things Pern-related, and Brenda Appleby posted there, singing songs of Pern to her own tunes and often her own lyrics supplementing those from the books. Her rendition of "The Question Song" was exactly how I had imagined in my head. She and I were both intrigued by Piemur and his trouble and we agreed that the sentence
"I got myself in and I'll get myself out." would be a great refrain for a troublemaker's ballad.
I do not know if she ever wrote this song, if she did, her version will be miles better than mine, as
I do not think I did justice to my idea ... but then again aren't plans always bigger, better, more ...
So I present:

The troublemaker's ballad.
I get in a pickle as often as not
I get into trouble, yes that is my lot.
I don't want to do it
I want to be good,
To help just a bit
To lighten the mood.
That they'll find me out, I know without doubt
But I got myself in and I'll get myself out.

When things they go wonky they just call my name
"Don't try to explain now, excuses are lame"
I did a good deed,
At least as I think
Where I saw the need,
But they say I stink
That they'll just blame me, I know without doubt
But I got myself in and I'll get myself out.

I got in a jam now so many a time
The mess and the trouble, the hot spot is mine.
And when I defend
my righteous deed,
they say I should mend
my ways and my feet.
That they'll find my faults I know without doubt
But I got myself in and I'll get myself out.

Sunday Selections ~ and a Problem

The colour of April is

We're so not missing any green any more, as the following photos of some flowers and buds of my surrsoundings from the last week will show:

The surviving tree in Hillerød
On my Way Home:

Bragging. The first EVER harvest of radishes from my own garden:

And a problem. For tomorrow I had chosen a starter word: YACON, a South-American root vegetable, grown by many people I know here in Denmark ... only I just tested on an off suspicion, and Wordle does not accept YACON.

Now what?
My alrernatives are: Yarns, Yetis, Yield, Yummy, Yeast. None of them satisfy me. What do you say?

A-Z Challenge 2025 ~ X

This year I choose an easy way out. Each day I'm going to solve the Wordle of the day, using as starter a word beginning with the letter of the day. I post every day at 6 pm. my time (GMT +2. Dang you DST!)

X is for XylemXylem is found in any growing plant. I cite from Wikipedia: The basic function of the xylem is to transport water upward from the roots to parts of the plants such as stems and leaves. It's what we - in trees - know as wood. And it is the only of the 22 X-words in Merriam-Webster having to do with growing things ... as far as I know.

I would have thought Xylem to be a bad starter word, but again today, I solved the Wordle in three tries, earning me an Impressive. It was more luck today, I was just testing out words, looking for more letters.

Words for Wednesday on a Friday ... Bill & Sue again

In April,  Elephant's Child is supplying the prompts for Words for Wednesday.

Word for Wednesday is a challenge that was started a long time ago. Now it has turned into a movable event with Elephant's Child as our coordinator; and the Words provided by a number of people.

The general idea of this challenge is to make us write. Poems, stories, subtitles, tales, jokes, haiku, crosswords, puns, ... you're the boss.
Use all Words, some Words, one Word, or even none of them if that makes your creative juices flow. Anything goes, only please nothing rude or vulgar.

It is also a challenge, where the old saying
"The more the merrier" holds true.

So Please, remember to follow the links, go back and read other peoples' stories. And please leave a comment after reading. Challenges like this one thrives on interaction, feedback and encouragement. And we ALL need encouragement.

- - A - - B - - C - -

This Wednesday's prompts:
Brand
Veered
Afternoon
Impromptu
Holiday

     And/or
Unaware
Companion
History
Paintings
Solace

I did not use all of the words, as I ran out of steam, I now can see the ending of this strange tale of Bill, Sue, Fred Thompson, the unwitting seventh son of a seventh son, and hope to end it next Wednesday.

"I'll take two of the whelps along as well," Sue said to the dog handler. "Please hand me the spotted one, and the potato coloured one."
"Those are the best of the litter," the dog handler readily agreed. "Good hunting."

"I found it!" Bill proclaimed, as Sue entered the room with Eryn and her whelps, Hue and Rynn, in tow.

"Fred Thompson's late father was a Mormon of the old brand," Bill explained, seeing Sue's vacant expression. "He had more wives. But it seems that because it was already illegal by then, the wives lived separately, and the children were left unaware of the other families."
"How on earth did he pull that one off?" Sue exclaimed.
"It might have helped that the wives knew and approved of the other wives' existence. There were three in all. And they lived in a place where three borders met, living close to one another, yet each family in another state." Bill continued. "Fred's mother was the last of the marriages, he has exactly six elder brothers, they are all still alive and at least fourteen sisters, some of those have since died. It seems all the elder ones were girls, it is like that in some families, but I'm rambling." He veered away from the subject and suggested that they took the dogs out on a search.
"Fine with me," Sue said. "Fred should be out for the rest of the afternoon."

Sue, Bill and the three ghost dogs returned home late in the afternoon to find a groggy, scared Fred sitting at the couch. "Why did you leave me all alone?" Fred asked, in a shaky voice. "I did not dare go outside, I felt, more than saw the ghosts."
"You did right," Sue said. "I'll let Bill fill you in while I make a pot of tea, then I take over with Bill making us a round of sandwiches."
"Our impromptu search led us to an old shipwreck down the coast from here." Bill began, then shook his head. "I have to start somewhere else. Your father was a very peculiar man. He was indeed the seventh son of old Fred Thompson, but from his fourth marriage. Your grandfather was a Mormon of the old school and had four wives. More of the sons were called Frederic, among those your father, who - even if polygamy is not legal any more - had three wives. You are his seventh son, not your mother's. At least two of your half brothers are also called Frederic. And from this stems your trouble  ... Ahh, here's Sue with the tea. I'll see to the sandwiches."
Fred looked at Sue with confusion obvious in his face. "My father had more wives? How was he not found out?" He shook his head. And that's why he left us so often. He was a travelling salesman, often away during the holidays ... he shared his time between his families?"
"Luckily the Mormon archives are the very best," Sue said. "And Bill is fabulous at digging out the facts. Yes he had three families, in three different states, that's probably why he was never found out. All your half-brothers are still alive, unlike all your half-sisters. But what happened at his burial?" Sue asked. "Did the other wives show up, and your half-siblings too?"
Fred looked a Sue, shook his head and took a large gulp of his tea. "Actually yes, they did," he said slowly. "Of course I did not then know who they were, and they were just presented as "family". Of course that's exactly what they were."
Bill came in, carrying a loaded tray of sandwiches. They took a break while appetites were sated and thirst stilled. Then Fred asked: "But the ghosts, what about the ghosts?"

... to be continued and, I hope finished soon.

A-Z Challenge 2025 ~ W

Warning! This post contains the answer to today's Wordle

W is for Weeds.  Yes, I know, double letter and all that. But for sure Weeds are growing things, olvar, we all know them, and in my wild garden they grow in great abundance, trying to take over the world, or at least my garden: Ground elder, bindweed, dead nettles, grasses, burdock, celandine, cleavers, buttercups and many more.
Do you think I omitted a few obvious ones? Stinging nettles, dandelions, thistles and a few more did not enter my list. Either because I like the looks, or because I use them for culinary, soapy or dyeing purposes, or because the insects love them, or all of these.

Weeds might not have been the ideal starter word because of the two Es. But today it was a good word. Upon reaching the third guess, I had it!

  • A word, containing C and K with middle letter O. Pen and paper to the rescue. W as a start followed by H was outed by W being yellow in WEEDS. I could not find any word with _ W O _ _ not using any of the grey letters and still containing K (I found only AWOKE and this one contains E - no good).
  • W then is not in the first half. And last? It looked wrong, so I went with third place. What about K then?
  • K as a first letter then. I tested all the others like this: K _ O W _ placing R then T, then Y ... in second place, none giving me any useful solutions. Until I reached N.

  • And K N O _ _ containing W had only two words surfacing in my brain: KNOWS, excluded by S being grey in WEEDS, and KNOWN - which I entered and which was the solution for today.
  • Later I looked it up in the Wordle solver. Words having O as the middle letter, containing W and K has exactly those three possible solutions, so no wonder I could find no more 😉

This earned me the first Impressive of April. As I told EC yesterday, I normally have two or three of these a month, But the forced starter words almost always make for an extra guess or two.
Sorry for this messy shot. I was a bit too fast there.
Runners-up were Worms and Wheat. Earlier this month, Wheat was actually the solution, a screenie from April 9th:

V is for Viola. VIOLA, commonly known as violets, grow in great abundance and flower right now. Its sweet smell is one of the pleasures of spring. I always mean to make candied violets, but somehow I never get it done.

No other words with V and five letters describing any growing thing, olvar, were found during the search for today's starter word. As I found only a couple of kelvar: Viper, Vespa (wasp) and Voles; the choice was easy, but Viola would have won, almost no matter what.
I'm unsure if today's solution would count as a kelvar *)

Today's Wordle. Inspiration struck again, earning me a Splendid.

*) Kelvar and olvar are Elven words for growing things, distinguishing only between those that move from place to place, kelvar (including monsters and all humanoids), and those that stay in one place, olvar (roughly corresponding to our flora).

A-Z Challenge 2025 ~ U

U is for Urman.  Don't you know what Urman is? I did not either until this morning. I was looking for plant-related words with U and five letters. This is surprisingly hard. I found Umami, Utile, Ulmus (Latin for Elm and a medicine made from this), Ursus (a bear), and then I stumbled over URMAN. A link took me to this explanation:
URMAN noun, plural -s
Meaning: taiga sense 1
Etymology Russian, from Kazan Tatar, forest *)

As I always dreamt of seeing the taiga on a ride on the Trans-Siberian Railway, I grasped this word, hoping to have it accepted by Wordle, and it was. Unfortunately I was not up to the challenge, and got the third Fail of April.

*)  I use the Merriam-Webster page, where you can define number of letters and starting letter. A very useful tool for finding starter words for the A-Z Challenge

T is for Thyme.  Thyme grows in my garden in great abundance, and I just planted another one, as the five plants we had, were just no enough to see us through the winter. A runner-up was Tulip. These pretty flowers are a great delight right now.

Although I love THYME, it was not the best of starter words. But I made it. Phew!

Poetry Monday ~ On a Tuesday :: Free

Easter happened. Sunday and Monday was family time, off school, off work. All kids and Grand-kids were at home. We hid Easter eggs and found them all. we baked bread and ate it all, we played crazy games and took a walk in a slight drizzle, we took care of the chicken and collected eggs, we planted potatoes and corn. In short a good time was had by all. Now the house is almost empty, only me and one Owlet at home.

-- 🪺  --

And I forgot that yesterday was Monday, and that every Monday is Poetry Monday. I must make amends today, Tuesday.

Free.
Free made me think. What does free mean? Is it free to do anything you like? is it free from hunger or pain?
I discovered early on that for me true free was to be allowed to be me and for you to be you.

My childhood's idols Kaj the frog, and Andrea, the parrot, were two puppets in a TV-program for children in the 1970s, they were very popular, and all the songs are still sung by preschoolers in Denmark.
They sung a song together called The Duet on Differences. It was a part of my teachings on what free means.
http://downol.dr.dk/download/bonanza/thumbs/000048672.jpg
Andrea, the charming, cautious parrot
and Kaj, the jazz-loving boisterous frog.

Their duet went something like this:

Kaj:       I am Kaj.
Andrea: I am Andrea.
Kaj:       I am a frog,
Andrea: And I a bird
Kai:      I can swim
Andrea: I can fly, but
Both:     we can both play hide-and-seek.
'cause even if we're different as can be
we are the best of friends as you can see.

Kaj:       I've got legs.
Andrea: and I have wings.
Kaj:       I have a mouth,
Andrea: And I a beak
Both:     But if we eat sour apples we'll both get tummy ache.
'cause even if we're different as can be
we are the best of friends as you can see.

Kaj:       I think storks are very scary.
Andrea: Oh the cats they make me fear.
Both:     But as long as we're together, neither cats or storks come near.
'cause even if we're different as can be
we are the best of friends as you can see.

Kaj:        I'm a boy
Andrea: I am a gi-irl
Kaj:       I sing low
Andrea: And I sing Hi-igh
Both: But when we both sing together, we'll make the music fly.
'cause even if we're different as can be
we are the best of friends as you can see.

Kaj:        I am fond of jazz and saxes
Andrea: And I like a quiet song
Both:     We sing jazz and quiet ditties, one of each, we can't go wrong!
'cause even if we're different as can be
we are the best of friends as you can see.

  -- 🐸  -- 🦜 --

Here you can hear Kaj & Andrea singing their duet. It was written in 1974 by Povl Kjøller, the man with the guitar.

S is for Scrub.  We have lots of scrubs growing in the Owlery, most of them are used for dyeing materials and sticks ... who can't use a stick now and then?

I have a hard time returning to blogging. It feels like I have been away for a very long time. I'll be around, but posting comments and replying to comments will happen later.

And the Wordle - a Fail today.

Q is for Quail.  No olvar with Q I went with a kelvar instead, also runners up were Quill, Quilt, and Quart, but no real growing there. We've been discussing whether to have these tiny fowls in our greenhouse, as yet undecided.
Hard word today. I had a whole paper filled whíth S T O _ D and S _ O T D combinations, until I once again remembered that repeating letters was a thing. I got Splendid for four tries.

- - A - - B - - C - -

This Wednesday's prompts:
Organic
Standards
Odour
Moisture
     And/or
20 years
Noses
Pregnant
Gloves
High

I succeeded in adding yet another chapter to Sue and Bill's strange adventure. Mostly stalling, but a bit of progress is happening. As usual I use the words in the order they were given.

Bill's gentle hands danced over the keyboard, he and his computer were almost like an organic unit to Sue. Maybe their methods were not always up to the moral standards set my their superior, but they kept themselves in good odour by bringing results -- every time.
Sue felt moisture collecting in her eyes. She loved that scoundrel, even after 20 years. They had solved many improbable and strange riddles together, mostly by following their noes - - or those of the ghost dogs.
Sue left Bill to his typing, and wandered to the car. The car was a new model, electric, and practically noiseless. In a very short time she parked outside the dog handler's house.
Sue rang the bell, and waited. It was the dog handler's wife who answered the bell. Sue asked if they could have Eryn, their old dog, back. The training of her pups had been fun, but it was only a parenthetic affair in their work. When Eryn, had become pregnant this was where it had gone to have her pups. Now the pups had been trained, Eryn was back to normal, fit for fight and eager to pull on her working gloves once more. Sue had high hopes of solving the riddle of Fred Thompson, the unknowing seventh son, plagued by ghosts.

A-Z Challenge 2025 ~ P

This year I choose an easy way out. Each day I'm going to solve the Wordle of the day, using as starter a word beginning with the letter of the day. I post every day at 6 pm. my time (GMT +2. Dang you DST!)

P is for Petal.  I also considered Pears, Pansy, and Pines. But then this old song from A Day at the Races (Marx Brothers) mixed itself into it. Choice made.

All God's Flowers got Petals.
All God's Flowers got swing
Maybe haven't got money
Maybe haven't got shoes
All God's Flowers got Petals.
Once again solved in 5 guesses, earning me a Great!

A-Z Challenge 2025 ~ O

This year I choose an easy way out. Each day I'm going to solve the Wordle of the day, using as starter a word beginning with the letter of the day. I post every day at 6 pm. my time (GMT +2. Dang you DST!)

O is for Opium.  Reeally? Yes really. Not because I am growing my own. The reason is that I like poppies, but no way am I going to use Poppy as a starter word tomorrow. Not with three P's. No way, not going to happen. Today the poppies will be represented by the one thing I do not harvest from them. I harvest their beauty, I harvest their shiny petals, always trying new ways to put this spendor into something lasting. I harvest poppyseeds for buns and bread.

As yesterday I was at a cinema watching Lord of th Rings I extended edition (four hours), I would have liked to use my Elven theme word OLVAR*) for today, but Wordle do not accept Elvish, sadly.

Oh, a Wordle. Here we go:
Phew!

*) Olvar - living things that do not move from place to place - as opposed to kelvar, living things that do move.

  -- 🌸 --

  -- 🌸 --

I wrote a poem yesterday, riding the train to Copenhagen, but when I returned home, all I wanted was a cup of tea and my bed.
Yesterday, from the train windows, I saw a sea of Anemoner covering the woods. Then I saw a single blossoming cherry tree and made this elfje:

Sakura,

A-Z Challenge 2025 ~ N

This year I choose an easy way out. Each day I'm going to solve the Wordle of the day, using as starter a word beginning with the letter of the day. I post every day at 6 pm. my time (GMT +2. Dang you DST!)

As the alternative badge, as supplied by Lissa seems to suggest growing things I'll prefer those as starter words, and if at all possible, I'll avoid words containing the same letter more than once
.

I'll maybe add a few words about my chosen starter word if fancy takes me, else I'll just post the solution - or not in the case that I did not solve it.

N is for Nymph & Nest.  I did not imagine that I would have so much trouble finding five-letter, plant-related words with quite normal letters. Today I could not make up my mind. Nymph is such a wonderful word, I like the sound, and I like the entity it describes. But as far as I know, there's no nymphs in my garden. Nests on the other hand, I do have. Mostly nests I do not like, doves' nests. They wake me up with their coo-coo-CO! way too early in the morning.

I almost did not make it today, as I forgot that R was an accepted letter. CHEST was a stupid guess. I got Phew, and was tempted to re-do it in another browser, but that would be cheating.
