Today the mailman brought a letter for MotherOwl. It was a surprise in so far as MotherOwl had forgotten she was promised this:
This supplement was presented to Herman van Rompuy at his visit to Denmark 11.th of May 2012. He is a haiku writer, and read some of his own haiku at the presentation. MotherOwl was not able to attend, and had forgotten all about it, until today, that is. The Haiku in this booklet are bilingual, Danish/English. And of course MotherOwls contribution has been added to the Haiku page.

Dråbehistorie: Istapperne -- The Icicles and the Droplets
Next story about the Droplets is done: The Icicles I think I'll have to hurry to "publish" a book in November. But on the other side, how thick is a book supposed to be to be a book?

Hjemmelavet chirashi-zushi
Homemade chirashi-zushi - spread out sushi - made
of sushi rice, smoked salmon and bellpeppers in bits. As a side, chicken broth
with noodles. It tasted so much better than supermarket sushi, and it is not as time consuming as the nice rolls.

Dråberne 3 --- Droplets 3
Den tredje historei om Dråberne er klar - Ballonturen - The third story starring the Droplets.
Haiku - Now also in English

11 years ago MotherOwl got interested in all things Japanese, and started writing haiku. Some of them are even written in English, or more exotic languages. I had them on my Facebook, but a week ago I delete all my pictures there. Now some of the Haikus have gotten a new home here at Krydderuglen.
Haiku-publishing is another of my November projects this year. The haiku page is prone to updates in miscellaneous languages without notice.
3 of my haikus were published laast year in an anthology of Danish Haiku writers.
Rød paraply er arbejdstitlen på min haikusamling.

Uglehjerte-skabelon -- (Update) -- Owly hearts template
This should be it. Remember to place the dotted line on a fold. And not least if uing a paper where the pattern or shades of colour means anything, one of them have to be a mirror image. Is't not as easy as it seems, but if at first you don't succeed.

Hvornår giver jeg op? -- Where do I give up?
- - - - -
When I have to learn something new or have to do some hard work, I have this graph inside my head:
Det ser nok nærmere sådan her ud:
- - - - -
This model tells me, that if I work for X hours, I'll get to the end -- whatever that might be -- with a steady progress.
The sad thing is that this model only works inside my brain. The reality looks more "bumpy" with plateaus and maybe even setbacks. And when I feel like I'm getting nowhere, I have the very human tendency to give up. This tells me that I often give up at the end of a plateau, just before progress will show again. I think it might look like this really:
- - - - - - -
Do you notice the double bump rigth before the end. That is my weak point, where I normally give up. Or was it at the big bump halfways?
This graph is very encouraging. I just have to remember that this is how it looks in real life.

Uglehjerter -- Owly Christmas Ornaments
Yesterday MotherOwl at Fru Kubiks lækkerier. saw some owly plaited Christmas Hearts - (If that's a new concept, then look here: Pleated Christmas Hearts) . She just had to try. But MotherOwl would not be MotherOwl if she just followed the original design. She altered it a bit. Look at the owl to the left. MotherOwl was still not satisfied, something about the beak makes it look a bit ... well ... old boxer comes to my mind.
Next morning scissors and pencils went to work again. The resulting owly heart is the rightmost one. If you plan to cut hearts from magazines, then remember if the pictures have to fit your idea you just have to make the second half a mirror image of the first. If not ... well it's not so nice as I imagined as all the dark colours are on the same - other - side ;)
When MotherOwl is satisfied with her template, a picture will be uploaded.

BogForum -- Copenhagen Book Fair
Last week-end the inhabitants of the Owlery participated at the Book Fair in Copenhagen. It had moved to a new, bigger place, which was great for us, as we're normally cooked on the balcony Saturday evening, where most people visit the Fair. This year it was grund floor only, and although the number of visitors was the bigges ever, walkiong around was not impossible.
We, the Writer and MotherOwl used almost all Thursday to put up the booth and get home. As we were trapped in the rush hour, getting home lasted almost as long as the setting up part.

Today MotherOwl once again visited a second-hand shop. She found 3 much needed glasses, two ornamental spoons - the Writer loves tha kind of cutlery - a glass for a tea ligth with Japanese? (well, maybe Chinese) signs on it, and one totally unnecessary item ...
The watermelon season is far in the future, but MotherOwl just had to buy it. It cost her 5 kroner (app 1,25 Euro). The Owlets will try it out on tomatoes and bell pepper when they help preparing dinner tonight.
OPDATERING -- UPDATE:
The watermelon knife is fabulous for cutting tomatoes. Marsupilami cut out tomatoes in uniform, thin slices with it - giving MotherOwl an attack of "I don't want to look" in the proces.

Ugleskabeloner - Owl Stencils
MotherOwl was given a gift. Owl stencils. She just had to try them, so a scrubbing sponge was cut in 8 -- minus the coarse green layer. Some tiny pots of paint from another idea found good use as the Owlets insisted on helping with painting. In no time 6 empty boxes each had their different owl - and MotherOwl just had to try painting on the wall as well. Yes blue is my favourite colour.

Høns i fri dressur - Hens running wild
- - - - -
Some days ago all the hens had once again escaped. This, but not the dramatic part of it, has been happening with depressing regularity ever since. Next day all seven hens were once again somewhere in the garden instead of in their designated place. MotherOwl once again repaired the door, and Marsupilami showed MotherOwl the hole thorough which he just saw another hen escaping. It was repaired as well.
Then we agreed that now it is starting to become cold, dark, and rainy outside, the Owlets do not enjoy being in the garden so much. The hens did not seem to agree, so now MotherOwl has had an extra chore added to her list: Let out the hens to roam freely in the garden when they had had time to lay their egg. And Minimax is not only supposed to get the eggs, but also, with help from scraps from the kitchen pen up the hens for the night.
This seems to work so far. Everybody is happy. MotherOwl do not have to mend holes or doors once or even twice a week, the Owlets do not have to hunt for hens whenever they decide to run away, and of course the hens are happy as well, they eat from the grass and scratch in the flower beds.

Det virker -- It Works

Look at this beautiful tower of lunchboxes. Suddenly they stood theree there as if by magic. MotherOwl did not have to say a word, neither to think of lunchboxes since sorting the chore papers this morning.
The box for used chore papers stansd besides the lonchboxes. As the last chore of the day, the films were put into their covers and back on the shelves again.

Ugleungernes pligter - Chores!
- - - - -
We're a big family, and it is not only MotherOwl and the Writer who has chores to do in the Owlery. All the Owlets know their chores, but getting them done was another, and longer story. MotherOwl could tell Marsupilami, Minimax, Trolli, and now the Pirate as well to put their lunchboxes away, do the dishes, or their housework, whatever was relevant. The answer was invariably a big smile: "Yes Mummy, shortly!"
After one or two hours MotherOwl remembered said chore, checked, and mostly it was not done. When MotherOwl confronted relevant Owlet with the omission, the answer was: Oops, I forgot. Sorry. I'll do it in a little while!"
MotherOwl became tired from this and invented the chore board:
Her står Blå og deler pligter ud.
Here is the Blue Droplet. He keeps an eye on the chore papers. Each Owlet pick the papers from their own pocket and transfers them to a box on the table. MotherOwl can immediately see when everybody are done, and if an Owlet is caught reading Donald Duck or playing computer games, it is easy to check if all chores are done. MotherOwl can work alongside the Owlets and help with homework without having to keep an eye on all the chores and who is supposed to be doing what.

Ugleboets ukendte beboere - The small People of the Owlery

A very mixed lot live in the Owlery. We have already met MotherOwl, the Writer, the Walrus, four of the six Owlets, 7 hens, and an unknown number of bees (I never count them). But our garden is populated by 8 of the small people, they live in our apples and go adventuring, experiencing things astoundingly similar to the Owlets' mischief. MotherOwl draws and writes about them.
Last year MotherOwl decided to join NaNOWriMo, but nothing more ever happened. This year MotherOwl has decided to publish stories - notice the indefinite numeric - here at my Blog instead. MotherOwl is sorry to say that they might not be published in English from the beginning, only time will tell if that happens.
PS. The page "The Droplets" links to another Blog in order to post each story as a post instead of one continuous page, which quickly will grow too big.

Halloween
Yes we do celebrate Halloween. We start in the evening wiht spooky things.
Dinner is spooky as well, or at least the things we eat are called by spooky names. It is rather a junk food dinner, but our halloween traditions stem from some busy year, and true to tradition, the Writer was away this year as well.
All holidays in Denmark start the night before, Christmas begins the 24th in the evening, continuing with lessening intensity the next days. We do the same with all Saints' day. We continue celebrating in the morning with spooky mugs and candy, but on the saints' calendar the picture is an all Saints' picture, this year from Happy saints, incorporating the Year of Faith.
The dinner on all Saints' day is as divers as possible, consisting of many small dishes form all over the world to suit the variegated Church.
Yes we do celebrate Halloween. We start in the evening wiht spooky things.
