Y  ~  Yderligere oplysninger

A - Z

Every day at noon (except Sundays) a new A-Z post goes live - or no post today.
The theme for this year is
Resilience as given by the team, with my subtitle Flowers, Trees and Ancestors.

I know that it is Sunday. But I still have more information, a prize to hand out, and a wonderful book to tell about. Why not a list of ancestral records.

Longest living ancestors:
  1. Maren Kirstine Andersdatter who lived for 89 years, 1 month and 22 days from Februar 27, 1818 to April 21, 1907
  2. Karen Jensdatter of Remkolde 86 years, 7 months, and 14 days from March 1, 1774 to Oktober 15, 1860
  3. The energetic grocer, Rasmus Hansen,  81 years, 6 months, and 2 days from November 3, 1872 to Maj 5, 1954.
Y ~ Y
The only ancestors whose obituaries I found in the papers are Ole and Margrethe Hansen of Svinø, parents of the grocer.
There is a typo in Margrethe's obituary. Her late husband is called Chr. instead of Ole (it looks very alilke in the old handwriting). But all other names, all dates and R. Hansen - R. for Rasmus the grocer - fits exactly.

First person where I have found both birth/baptism and death:
  1. Of course one of the people of Ulse. My 6xgreat-grandmother: Sidse Hansdatter baptised 26 March 1719, died 13 August 1797
  2. Niels Envoldsen from Braabye, born 26 September 1754 and died 23 January 1824.
  3. Maren Stephansdatter, Herlufmagle, born 1 December 1776 and died 26 March 1844.

Oldest date of marriage:
  1. Sidse's daughter from Ulse, Karen Olesdatter, married Jens Madsen on 30 December 1770,
  2. Almost a year later the Smiths' grandmother and grandfather, Karen Christensdatter and Jens Madsen married in November 1771.
  3. It is long before the third place, Maren Stephansdatter and Hans Nielsen (Herlufmagle), who married in 1801.

Most children:
  • First place: Maren Kirstine Andersdatter from Nyraad (my great-great-great-grandmother) with 10 children, nine of whom survived to adulthood.
  • 2. & 3. place:  A tie with 9 each. Maren Kirstine Andersen from Herlufmagle (my maternal grandmother's mother, with all nine surviving) and Johanne Kirstine Madsdatter from Ulse (my maternal great-grandmother's mother, with eight surviving to adulthood).

A small funny item from the paper

     Lost.
A tyre with rim is lost
between Nestvved and Køng
     All information please at:

Y  ~ Y
It's only because I by now know Rasmus Hansen's phone number, Svinøland 24, that I can see that it is him looking for his lost tyre on January 6, 1922. I hope it was returned.

And the prize for the worst handwriting goes to this guy, probably Frederik Henrik Larsen Martner, vicar of  of Fodby from 1780 to 1789
This looks just like my childrens' preschool pretend-writing. It is a bit more legible.

Dom. Judica. |  Hans Pedersens Datter i Nielstrup kaldet Zitze.

Y

And a treasured helper.
In the post Langt tilbage i tiden (Far Back in Time) I write with no comments whatsoever: Sidse Hansdatter was baptised March 26, which in 1719 was the 5th Sunday of Lent, also called Dominica Judica.
But in the register it was written like this:

Dom. Judica. |  The Daughter of Hans Pedersen in Nielstrup called Zitze.

Did you even know that there was a Sunday called Judica? I did not, and of course I had no clue as to when it was. I asked my husband, who knows such stuff, and as an answer he handed me this amazing book that even fits my Colour of the Month.

R.W. Bauer: A Calendar of the Years 601 to 2200

Judica. 5te Søndag i Fasten.
Y
The last pages of this book is a list of how days were called back then, and I found on page 138: Dominica Judica, 5th Sunday of Lent.

The first half of the book contains the calendars and a key to the calendars. I looked up 1719, It was calendar number 19, and there I found that 5th Sunday of Lent 1719 was March 26th.

I have used this book quite a lot.

  1. Those were very long lives indeed for the time. The book was a wonderful gift - and that vicar's handwriting looks like many a doctor's handwriting today...

    1. Hehe, yes. I forgot doctors' handwriting, as all our prescriptions atre now ditital or at the very least printed.

  2. The book looks and sounds wonderful, i'm glad it's so useful. You have learned so much about your family, it's amazing.

    1. Yes I have learned a lot - and just today I foun an error - and the rigth ancestor. Job's NOT done yet. That book still lies here besides me.

  3. I agree with Elephant's Child - those were long lives for the time; even today many people do not get past 70. I have started reading the obituaries every day and I'm amazed how many folks are dying in their fifties, sixties, seventies. Good job on uncovering so much information. I like the tidbit about the lost tire. It makes the past seem not so distant, doesn't it?

    1. I'm going to make a small extra on age and so on. Because no, it was not unusual to reach 70 years of age back then. Obituaries - for grown ups that is - reads much the same in 1866 when "my" papers begin, as they do today.

    2. That is very interesting - now you've got me thinking. I assumed the longevity to be a family trait.

  4. Funny to advertist about a lost tyre, but maybe's a necessity at the time?

The handwriting has a certain style but yes, it's a bit difficult read when the letters overlap.

That calender book sounds very useful.

    Have a lovely day.

    1. A whole tyre with rim would probably be even more expensive back then than today. I think it funny that he did not sign his name. Was he ashamed to tell he lost it, or why?
