I ~ Indsiddernes stafetbørn

A - Z

Every day at noon (except Sundays) a new A-Z post goes live - or no post today.
The theme for this year is
Resilience as given by the team, with my subtitle Flowers, Trees and Ancestors.

I ~ Indsiddernes stafetbørn - Tenants and Relay Marriages.

Continuing where I left off yesterday in  H ~ Hans' Descendants. If you did not read it, please do

Kirsten and Envold's son, Niels Envoldsen, married Birte Sørensdatter with whom he had at least the children Ane (1784), Dorte (1792), Jens (1794) and Karen (1796) before Birte Sørensdatter died on 30 March 1808 at the age of 50.
Then Niels Envoldsen from Tjæreby travelled to Vester Egede where he married Jens and Mette's daughter Dorte the next year. He was 55 years old and she 29 when they were married.
Together they had four daughters, Mette*) (1810), Ane (1813) and twins Karen and Kirsten (1815) before Niels Envoldsen died aged 69 in 1824.
Dorthe remarried, as was normal for widows with children. Niels had died in January 1824, and already in October that year Dorthe married Peder Hansen, a 44-year-old widower from Haslev town.
When Dorthe died 7 years later Peder Hansen travelled to Braabye and married Kirsten Nielsdatter in "Kongehuset (The KIng's House)". As far as I can see, they had no children, but Peder Hansen was responsible for a bunch of stepchildren, Niels and Dorthe's four were 21, 18, 16 and 16 years old when Peder and Kirsten married.

It is stories like this, where widows and widowers hurriedly remarry, that let Dorthe's 29-year-long widowhood stand out as something highly unusual.

Kort. Cirklen uden navn i er Vester Egede.
Map. The circle without a name in it tells where Vester Egede is placed.

*) Mette Nielsdatter is the mother of Dorthe's husband Hans Christian Andersen, who died digging marl. Now we're done with this branch of the family tree. An overview is due:
The caption says: My grandmother's mother's family. Landless farmhands in Braabye.

  1. Those quick and practical remarriages do indeed show up a long widowhood as unusual and meaningful.

  2. It seems in those days, marriage wasn't for the convenience of love but for the practical reasons of the need for two parents to tend a house full of children.

    1. The first marriage was, I think, mostly for love, and I suspect at least some of the second ones - with a pregnant bride - was love and practical reasons both.

  3. Hard to make it on one's own--especially with children in the picture! Quick re-marriages were necessary. The long-unmarried widow or widower was NOT the norm!

    1. No, exactly. This is why I read the story of true love and a broken heart into Dorthe Madsdatters 27 years long life as a widow with 6 children.
