Ⓐ - Ⓩ ~ Bjørn

This is a series of studies for my long-time-in-the-writings book about the magic in the Nordic countries.
We are in the 70es on Unicorn Island, an island off the coast of southern Zealand. A handful of teachers have gathered the broken threads of magic once again, trying to revive the magic in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, the Faroes and partially Greenland.
Our main protagonist is Susan (me) from Elsinore and her three co-apprentices and friends Heidi, Tage and Lis living at Unicorn Island.
I grasped the chance to write a little bit about some of the lesser known apprentices in this A-Z challenge
.

B is for Bjørn Anderson from Norway

Bjørn is 12, when the story begins, he comes from Kristanssand in the southernmost part of Norway, where his parents Lars and Ingrid are caretakers of Posebyen, the old town there. His mother is a witch, and he knows about his magic. He is the youngest of 5 siblings, the others are much older than him, and therefore not at Unicorn Farm, more of them are wizards and witches.
Bjørn is a mediocre healer, but a good flyer. He feels inferior, and maybe he is; at least he is weak. His wand is made of Rhododendron emitting orangey sparks. We meet Bjørn in the autumn holidays where he joins David's team in the broom race.
Obviously bullied by David he has a peripheral role in the "preparation" of the brooms the night before.
After the broom racing and its aftermath, we do not hear much about Bjørn.

Tomorrow C ... for Cassandra.

  1. You have named so many places I have never heard of but they sound fascinating especially if these characters of yours are there.

If you say Bjørn is the youngest, I don't think you need to say the others are older than him. Perhaps, you should say, his older siblings are wizards and witches. Just nick-picking, don't mind me.

Lots of younger siblings always feel a little inferior to their older siblings so perhaps that was why Bjørn is weak. Just a thought.

    Have a lovely day.

    1. Thanks for liking my names - the place names are all real - Unicor Farm / Island is the only exception to this rule. It sure exists, but is not named thus.

As for the brothers and sisters of Bjørn I told that they are much older, he is at least 7 years younger than his youngest older brother - I miss a word for this. I have it only in Danish, and the dictionary for once was not helpful.

You're rigth on the reason for Bjørn being weak.

  2. I do love the back stories. As for Bjorn feeling inferior I am the youngest of my family by quite a long way. Perhaps that is part of the reason I have always felt lesser.

    1. My private theory is that the youngest in larger families tend to either feeling inferior or being pampered to a degree where they are intolerable ;) Exceptions of course exist.

  3. Bjorn may also simply be a "late bloomer." Many are.

    1. Hmm, he may. He is not that nice a person, they exist as well.

  4. With Bjorn being a good flyer, perhaps he will turn out to be a good flying teacher for the young ones in the future.

    1. Unfortunately he is not one of the survivors. He died at age 17 from drugs in Stockholm. We know this from my chapter on Birch Manor More Dead Apprentices.
