L ~ Langt tilbage i tiden.

A - Z

Every day at noon (except Sundays) a new A-Z post goes live - or no post today.
The theme for this year is
Resilience as given by the team, with my subtitle Flowers, Trees and Ancestors.

L for (lidt for) langt tilbage i tiden

L for (A Little too) far back in time
Johanne Kirstine Madsdatter's ancestors are the ones where I can go absolutely furthest back in time. I do not know anything about them, other than that they were smallholders and craftsmen in Ulse. Ulse was a parish in Fakse county, Præstø shire and the church registers here reach back to 1717.

How do I work my way this far back? This time around I was really lucky. In the census for 1787, I can find Johanne Kirstine's father, Mads Jensen, as a 7-year-old child. And of course he lives with his mother, his father and his five siblings, but luckily for me, his grandmother and grandfather also live with them.

Nice copy from Danish Family Search (slightly edited).
Ergo his mother's mother was Sidse Hansdatter. I have found her in the church records. She was baptised March 26, 1719 and died August 13, 1797
Grandfather is Ole Hansen born around 1714 (before the registers once again) and died August 16, 1789 (I found this).

L

Sidse Hansdatter. Her er hendes dåb indskrevet i kirkebogen på side 4.
L
Since the church records for Ulse began in 1717, we can't go back any further. It is also quite difficult to find people in the church records this far back. Let's take a look as far back as possible. Sidse Hansdatter's baptism is recorded here on page 4.
Kan I finde hende?  Dåbsbørnenes navne er normalt fremhævet med understregninger.
     Her er lidt hjælp.
- Hun er født Nielstrup (1 km. syd for Ulse),
- hendes far hed Hans Pedersen.
L
Can you find her?  The names of baptised children are usually underlined.
     Here is a little help:
- She was born in Nielstrup (1 km. south of Ulse),
- her father's name was Hans Pedersen.
- She was baptised March 26, which in 1717 was the 5th Sunday of Lent, also called Dominica Judica.

L

Men ... præsten har glemt at understrege netop hendes navn, så her har jeg været inde over med den gule overstregningspen
L
But the vicar forgot to underline her name. I have used the yellow highlighter here.
Det er altså ikke helt let.       L       Not that easy, you must admit.

    1. I am trying to push the limit all the time. But now I'm at the end of the registers in most places - one place only go back further, but there I cannot find the persons in question.

  3. All that close together writing would give me a headache before I finished two pages. well done for getting so far back. 1717 is a loooong way back.
