Strikkeonsdag og opdateringer -- Yarn Along and Updates

Minimax' hat is reknit. The cast off is a bit narrow, I might have to redo that, but else it turned out well. The second sock reappeared last Saturday, when the Bermudatriangle regurgitated it into my knitting bag. I had only looked there once or twice a day since the sock disappeared. He is asking for his socks almost every day.

As a preparation for today's visit to a circus, we have been studying circus and it's history. We now know why lions and tigers are not allowed in Denmark, when the first circus visited here, and so on. All MotherOwl's reading have been circus related.

Today at the circus Minimax lost first his hat and a mitten, and then the second mitten, so we had to return to our seats once again. Luckily MotherOwl has not grown too old to scramble beneath the seat rows after lost mittens. The Slovakian carnies smiled at us when we left the tent for the last time. It was cold, but a great show. Camels, elephants, jugglers and even cats. The Owlets went early to bed after a cup or two of scalding hot tea and still hot bread.

My yucky soap has been cut into big, rustic lumps. They look good, a salmon pink with small swirls and dots from the shavings. Now I just need some patience. Curing takes approximately 6 weeks. The soap is ready for use in the beginning of May.

The Oakmoss we are steeping in ammonia is doing well. It is getting redder and redder. Minimax or MotherOwl remember to shake and aerate it almost every day. Most days it is shaken more than once. The decision to place it in our living room window was the right one. Let's see how the colours are going to look in a month or so, we're waiting for positive temperatures, preferably with two digits because ammonium is an out of doors-thing.

During the pasqual triduum I'm not going to blog much, if at all. I'm going to try to join in on Crunchy Catholic Momma's Stash Bashing tomorrow anyway.

  • Krucifikset inde i stuen fik friske palmegrene i søndags.
  • Our living room crucifix with new palm branches. As there's no palm trees in Denmark, we use boxwood instead.

  1. You have a lot going on. The soap and the hat both look great. What is the purpose of steeping the oakmoss in ammonia?

    1. The purpose is to release the ochrils, a type of plant dyes that are responsible for purple to red colours.

    1. Thanks. The saponification proces is almost done after a week or two - dependeing on tempertures and a lot of other things. But for the best experince I always wait for 6 weeks. That way all the lye is done saponifying the fats, and the soap is extremely gentle to the skin. It gfets better with time still, also because the water evaporates, and the longer a soap cures, the longer lasting it will be when you use it.
Also a new soap has to be broken in, I let the Writer do this as my skin is sensible. He uses it a time or two, and then I stand ready. I found a five years old soap of mine some time ago, it was puire luxury ;)

    1. Tak for rosen.

  4. Uglemor,

My children have only been to the circus once. They still have so many wonderful memories of our time under the big top. We saw the Moscow Circus. It was a good show!

Your soap looks great now it's pink and cut into blocks.

You have boxwood instead of palm? We have ferns! Palms do grow here but they are in short supply in our area, so we use ferns. Father says, "Hold up your palms!" but we know what he means, and we hold up our ferns. He always finds enough palms to decorate the church.

I borrowed a Learn to Speak Danish book and CD from our library the other day. Now I am in even more awe over your ability to speak two languages. I am not sure I have the talent to work it all out. Here's a sentence or two for you: Hej Uglemor! Hvordan har du det? Now I am hoping the word for 'you' doesn't have two forms for masculine and feminine!

I pray you have a very blessed Easter!

    1. Dear Sue Elvis, I'm impressed. Danish is a crazy language to learn. Very few rules and loads of exceptions from those. Your sentences are totally correct. Danish only (just like English) distinguish between masculine and feminine in 3rd person.

I pray for a blessed Easter for you and your family. as well.

    2. Uglemor,

I have copied and pasted your words and will see if I can work out the meaning (without resorting to Google translate!) I'll be back!
