Dagens billede 5 -- Picture a Day 5

  • Porretoppe, ingefær i to små poser, porreringe og blandede chilier. Alt sammen lige til at putte i fryseren.
  • Green parts of leek for soup making, two small bags of gnger, leek rings and mixed chillies, the orange ones are the hottest and yellow is mildest.

MotherOwl is good at buying in bulk when things are at an offer, but using them or getting them frozen is not that easy.  For the last two years our shop ran out of organic leek sometimes in late February to our great irritation, what is soup or stew without leek? And MotherOwls growing our own leek plans has always ended with grass rather than leek.

This year MotherOwl bought many leek when they were cheap some time ago. Since then they have sat on our staircase - it's the coldest room an central as well - and grinned at MotherOwl each time she passed them. Also on the same day chillies were cheap, and as our chilli harvest was bad, some found their way into the shopping basket too.

But today was the day. All the leek were chopped and put into a bag, also the green parts for later use in soup making. Then the chillies underwent same treatment, and the homegrown ginger was chopped and put in bags.

In addition to all the vegetables some meat from the "today or tomorrow is best before date"-place at the supermarket were frozen. Next week there's no school, and maybe MotherOwl do not have to go shopping each day then.

The chilli seeds were put aside, as MotherOwl intend to grow them in the next week or so. The jalapeño seeds I bought some years ago are used up. Yay a new project!

  1. Uglemor,

I love leek soup. I love zucchini and leek soup even more! I never thought of freezing leeks while they are in season. Perhaps I should!

    1. Well I was lucky I did it, today organic leek were sold out and no more coming. The Owlets like potato soup with leek.
