Birkebarksfletning -- Basket weaving

MotherOwl has had a penchant for basket weaving. But she is allergic to birch. so Achoo! No birch bark weaving here ;) No, that's not why, but birch bark is forbiddingly expensive, as it is hand carved from trees growing in Norway and Sweden, the Danish varieties (or maybe climate) are no good for weaving.

One day MotherOwl got wise. Papers! a whole page folded into itself several times looks and feels a bit like birch bark.

MotherOwl wove several ugly baskets, but one day she mastered the art and wove a waste paper basket from 4 issues of the local paper.

It is one of MiniMax' chores to get the eggs. He does so faithfully every day, but as he is a very active person, he is jumping a lot! also when gathering eggs. The old basket broke. MotherOwl made him a new one from newspaper, but one day MiniMax fell and broke the eggs. Newspaper and broken eggs are not a good combination!

Next time MotherOwl went shopping, the local Variety Store held closing down sales. MotherOwl bought lots of placemats made of plastic strips. She cut them up and wove an egg basket from the strips. It can be washed, and with an extra bottom it is soft enough for the eggs to - mostly - survive MiniMax' jumping.

  2. Uglemor,

I love your baskets! They are so clever. I can't see any joins in the paper. I wonder how you made them.

"the Danish varieties (or maybe climate) are no good for weaving." Could you live in Denmark? I've been wondering... I copied some of your text and entered it into Google translate and voila! It is Danish!

I enjoy looking at your photos and hearing about your life. I am really glad you are bilingual and translate your posts into English. Thank you!

    God bless!
